Chapter 3
As soon as he came into the room, my heart stopped.
He punched Harley in the face, knocking her unconscious before starting to cut my restraints.
"Who are you?" I gasped, jumping up from the table.
"Sh." The man said, putting a finger to my lips. "Stay behind me."
Suddenly, another man burst in, and my eyes widened. It was Batman, the hero from the news. My idol! Right in front of me!
"You saved me!" I gasped, a smile coming across my face.
I couldn't say anything else, because the other man pulled me behind him as Mr. J entered the room.
"Well well well, Batman. You've done it again." Mr. J said with an evil smile.
"Leave. Never come back." Batman said firmly.
Mr. J cackled. "No. You don't have control over any of that." He smiled as he turned to the man in front of me. "And Robin. My, you've improved since the last time we met. You knocked out Harley right away! I should've known how weak she was..."
Without a warning, Mr. J threw a punch at Batman. He stumbled but didn't fall. Quickly, Batman punched Mr. J in the face.
"Get her out of here." Batman said before punching Mr. J again.
"What about you?"
"I'll be fine."
"And what about her?" The man in front of me pointed to Harley.
"Leave her. I'll deal with her. Now go!" Batman punched Mr. J again and grabbed his shirt, throwing him against the wall. The man grabbed my hand and escorted me out.
"Wait! Who are you?" I asked, running as he pulled me along.
"I'm Robin." The man replied with a smile. "Nice to meet you."
"What just happened?" I asked.
"We'll talk later. Right now, we need to get to a safe place." Robin said, coming to a stop. He ran towards an isolated wall and entered a code into some machine mechanism thing. Suddenly, a secret door opened in the ground. Robin jumped down, landing on the ground about 15 feet below.
"You coming?" He asked.
"I..."
"Hurry, jump down before the security system resets!" Robin said, motioning for me to come down.
"I don't even know you."
"I told you, I'm Robin. Now get down here! It's not safe up there! Don't you know what happens to beautiful young girls like you in Gotham City?"
I blushed and quickly jumped down, a spur of the moment decision that I'd probably regret later. Robin pressed a button on a keypad inside, and the opening closed.
"We're in Gotham City?" I questioned. Robin nodded. I sighed.
"This is the last place I want to be." I explained. "Gotham City is known for it's crime rate. Well, that and Batman. Speaking of which, how do you know Batman?"
"He's my best friend." Robin said with a smile.
"So you fight together?"
"Oh yeah, all the time." Robin responded. "How'd you end up here?"
"I... I was just going to the doctor's office when... when the doctor drugged me. That clown with the green hair? That was him. Mr. J. I think he drugged me and flew me here. What's today, anyway?" I questioned.
"Today's January 22nd." Robin responded. "I can't believe he did that to you."
"What time is it?"
"Almost midnight."
I gasped. "ALMOST MIDNIGHT? Oh my God, it's been hours since the appointment!"
"Where'd you come from?" Robin questioned.
"Florida."
"Seriously? The Joker flew all the way to Florida just for you?"
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, I know. It's not like I'm special or anything."
"Hey, I didn't mean it like that." Robin said with a sigh. "Here, follow me."
"Where are we going?"
"You can relax. We're just going to the bedroom. It's where Batman and I sleep."
"How do I know you aren't going to... do whatever happens to beautiful young girls like me?" I asked suspiciously.
"I work with Batman. Did you see him talking to me? I would NEVER do that, I promise."
For some reason, I believed him. I trusted him. Probably not a good idea in a place and situation like this, but I followed him to the bedroom. It had 2 twin beds in it. But the room was so dark and so gloomy that I didn't see how a hero's bedroom could be as... cold as this.
"I know, it's not very comforting, it is?" Robin said, reading my mind. "Here, sit down."
I sat down on the bed to the left. He smiled and sat next to me.
"That clown with the green hair is called the Joker." Robin began. "He and Batman are mortal enemies. I guess you could say that I'm Batman's sidekick."
"Who was that girl?"
"Harley Quinn. His girlfriend."
I laughed. "He has a girlfriend? I almost feel bad for her."
"Yeah, there's rumors that he's abusing her." Robin told me. "But the Joker is so mysterious and creepy that nobody knows for sure."
"I don't even want to know."
Robin chuckled. "Me neither. I forgot your name. What is it again?"
"I'm Allison." I replied with a smile. I shook Robin's hand.
"How old are you, Allison?" Robin asked.
"I'm 14." I replied. "I am about to turn 15, so I was going for my annual check-up."
"In Florida, right?" Robin said, clicking his tongue. "How's the weather down there?"
"I... It's hot."
Robin laughed. "Yeah. Up here, it's much cooler, right?"
"Yes, if you mean temperature-wise. I noticed that when I got here." I responded.
"I know it'll be hard for you to talk about it, but I'd like to know what the Joker did to you so we can prevent it from happening to other people." Robin said with a sigh. "But if you're not ready to talk about it yet, that's okay."
I grinned. "You're way too nice for Gotham City, Robin." Robin laughed at that.
"Basically, the Joker gave me some medicine combination to knock me out at the doctor's office. He then took me to Gotham City, I guess, and when I woke up, I was tied to that table."
"I... I'm so sorry. You're too young for that." Robin said quietly.
"You're kind of young, too. Fighting against criminals? How old are you?" I asked.
"I'm 16 years old." Robin replied. I nodded. "Anyways, what happened next?"
"He gave me laughing gas, then had Harley come in and ask me questions. She eventually got rid of the laughing gas's effects and told me..." I stopped talking after a second.
"Told you what, Allison?" Robin's face softened. "It's okay, you can tell me."
"Harley said they've been after me for a long time..." I admitted. Robin's eyes widened as his breathing sped up.
"What?" I asked, suddenly worried. I tensed up on the bed.
"Nothing, it's just... they don't usually say that unless... never mind. Keep going, please." Robin said quickly.
"Well, I... Okay. They were asking me what my relationship with Batman was, and they asked me where he was." I said.
"How would you know?"
"I don't." I replied. "I think they're insane."
"Well, you're right. They are." Robin replied. "But you don't have to worry about them anymore. You're safe."
"I want to go home." I said with a sigh.
"I'll schedule that as soon as I can." Robin reassured me.
"HOLY CRAP! I need to call my mom, she's probably worried sick!" I gasped, jumping up from the bed, running through the hallway and pressing the button.
"Allison, WAIT!" Robin yelled as I climbed up the ladder to get out of the safe hole. I heard him call my name, but all I could focus on was finding a payphone. I searched through my pockets and found 50 cents. Thank God. I eventually found a payphone, but there was another man there. He saw me and quickly hung up.
"Hey, gorgeous." The man said with a creepy smile. He must've been about 25 years old. I slowly backed away as he made his way towards me. He suddenly ran forward and pinned me against the wall.
I did the one thing I could think of doing: I screamed as loud as I could. The man pulled out a knife and held it to my throat.
"Shut up or I'll kill you." He said, glaring at me.
Before I could even react, the man's knife flew out of his hand as he was punched to the ground. I gasped for breath and nearly died when I saw Robin.
"Rule number 1 of Gotham City." Robin said, panting. "Never go out alone."
I was still gasping for breath. Robin quickly grabbed the knife from the man's hand and put it in his pocket.
"Call your mom." Robin said. "I'll protect you."
"Robin..." I said, suddenly throwing my arms around him. "Thank you."
Robin looked surprised, but he patted my back. "You're welcome, Allison."
Eventually, I let go of Robin and picked up the payphone. I dialed my mom's number and waited, but there was no answer. My eyes filled with tears at the thought of her back home, pacing the floor and crying her own eyes out.
Suddenly, I felt an arm come around my waist. I whirled around, but it was just Robin. He pulled me into another hug.
"It's okay, Allison." He said as tears rolled down my cheeks. "How about we go back to the bunker and try again in a couple hours?"
I nodded, feeling bad for crying into Robin's shoulder, but the tears wouldn't stop coming. They rolled down like a waterfall. Robin embraced me and stroked my hair.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"No, nothing about this is okay!" I cried, resting against his warm body.
"Alright. I'll take you back to the bunker, and you can rest in my bed. I'll make you breakfast tomorrow. How does that sound?" Robin comforted me, almost making me cry harder. He was too sweet for this cruel place.
"Th-thank you." I whispered, pulling away and taking a deep breath. He took my hand and started walking me towards the bunker when we saw Batman. He had blood running down from his mouth, and he looked exhausted, but other than that, he looked normal.
"Holy bikini, Batman!" Robin gasped, running up to him. "What happened?"
"We'll talk later. You were supposed to keep her safe, not bring her into the middle of Gotham City!" Batman scolded.
"It w-was my f-fault." I admitted, blushing with embarrassment, since I was still crying a little bit. "I-I ran out, and... Robin s-saved me. B-but it's n-nice to meet you, Batman."
"Pleasure." Batman said simply. He looked down and saw that Robin and I had interlocked our hands. His expression didn't change whatsoever. "Come on. We need to get back to the bunker."
"That's exactly where we were headed." Robin said. Batman led the way while Robin and I, still holding hands, followed him.
Once we reached the bunker, Robin told me to wait inside while he talked to Batman for a second. So I jumped down and waited not only 30 seconds before Batman and Robin came down. I smiled a weak smile at both of them. Only Robin smiled back.
"Come on, Allison. You look like you could use some rest." Robin said with a small but shy grin. He grabbed my hand and led me down to the bedroom. I climbed into his bed, with his permission, of course, and laid down. Robin pulled the covers over me.
"Are you comfortable?" He asked.
I nodded. "Thanks, Robin."
"No problem, Allison."
And after he left, I fell asleep.
