[7] Love Without Caring
Kaylee spent the rest of the afternoon talking to her stuff animals about the kiss.
She didn't want to tell Delilah, or anyone else for that matter. Kaylee knew what they were going to say and she didn't want to hear it. That she wasn't just a regular girl, who simply was dating her best friend. That she shouldn't fall in love when no one was meant to love her.
She didn't want another reminder.
"It wasn't like the ones in movies," Kaylee described, her eyes scanning through the line of stuffed animals on her bed and pretending that they were following and nodding along. "With the rain, or the slow-mo, or the weird tongue thingies. It was quick — basically a peck, I guess."
She picked up her bunny, the one that Jonah gave her for her nineth birthday, and held it close so that their eyes met. "But it was special nonetheless, don't you think?"
As a reply, her bunny's head fell forward.
It was probably about five solid minutes of Kaylee babbling to her stuffed animals until she heard a knock on her window. Thinking it was Jonah, Kaylee smiled and turned around, only to be left disappointed when it was Delilah on the other side of the glass.
Opening her window, Kaylee asked, "Delilah, what are you —"
"We need to talk."
—
Delilah had brought Kaylee to a hill. She had parked her car lazily and slammed the door behind her with a bang.
Kaylee watched the way she walked up— rushed as if time was slowly running out — and how, from where they stood, their town looked so fragile under the dark blue sky. And, without a word, Kaylee dreadfully followed.
Delilah was already at the top, with her back to the world and her hair flying along with the wind. It made Kaylee uncomfortable and so, she wrapped her arms protectively around her chest and let her hair cover her porcelain eyes.
This is your fate, the world had whispered.
"Delilah, why are we here?"
"This is where Jonah's standing right now," she said. It was weird how she carried herself, as if Delilah was the one about to be broken. "He's about to fall. For you, Kaylee. He thinks you're going to catch him. And you have tell him that you won't."
Suddenly, Kaylee didn't want to look at Delilah anymore. "I will."
"Oh, really?" Delilah's tone made Kaylee shrink further into her skin. "Because Jonah just called me and told me that you kissed him today. Kaylee, you're leading him on."
"I know."
"Then stop." Kaylee could feel Delilah moving closer and it sent shivers down her spine to know how differently she looked at her. "This has gone too far and what you're doing is too selfish —"
Kaylee shot her head up and, although her eyes were slowly shattering, her gaze was dangerous. "I'm not being selfish."
"Kaylee, you're making me lie for you —"
"Stop it."
"And you're holding onto someone's heart —"
"Be quiet."
"When you're not even meant to be with anyone in the first place—"
"Shut up!" Kaylee screamed. This was too much. Delilah was too much. Everything was too much. She needed them to be quiet. She needed them to just stop. "Don't even go there, Delilah."
The way Kaylee was right now — barely holding on and almost breaking — made Delilah go quiet.
"Do you know how lucky you are? To just be normal? To be a girl who can fall in love without caring for the consequences?" Kaylee took a step forward. "Do you know how fucking lucky you are? To not see what I see? To not be constantly reminded how you're not like everyone else? That you're not meant to fall in love? That you're not worth falling in love with? That you'll never know why you're different? That you'll just have to accept that you're unwanted?"
It was not until her chest began to feel heavy and her breathes became uneven when Kaylee noticed she was crying. And it was the kind that wouldn't stop, because it was held in for too long.
"Why do I have to be a tragedy?" Kaylee whispered, ignoring how Delilah began to cry too, as she looked up at the sky — desperate for answers that will never be given. "I don't want to be alone."
And so, as she stood there crying, Kaylee found herself at the edge of the cliff, waiting for the wind to push her down and completely shatter her into a million pieces.
