Chapter 9: Dark Paradise
Ophelia was seated on the end of the couch, basically hugging the arm chair. She loved to be hugging the end of the couch. It was her favorite spot. Marko was sitting on the other side of the couch while Paul was sprawled out in an armchair. Then David and Dwayne were in their same spots.
"So, Ophelia". David started as the two looked at one another. David had a smile on his face. For once it wasn't a sinister, something evil on his mind smile. It was a genuine one.
"How old do you think I am?" David asked, honestly.
Paul threw his head back, letting out an airy laugh from the question.
"You know, the saying; never ask a woman her age? I believe it should go the same for men". Ophelia answered honestly, causing Marko to let out a snort. Another laugh from Paul and a smile from Dwayne.
David just tapped the end of his chair as he continued to look with her, nodding and then finally answering;
"I was turned in 1877".
Ophelia's mouth fell open as she looked at him in shock, nodding her head. "Out of sight". Was all she could say.
She propped her elbow on the armrest, resting her head in her hand as she looked at David, wanting to know more. David who basically read her mind sat forward in his spot, his hands clasped in one another as his arms rested on his legs.
"I was born in 1853. I am different than who I was before. If I knew what I know now, I would have changed everything". David started.
Ophelia watched as David messed around with his hands and she saw his eyes look at the ground. She knew it was hard for David to open up. He was someone that never showed weakness. That was something David feared. For others to see him at his lowest.
And David is going through his worst fear. He has told his brothers his backstory and now here he is, telling Ophelia. Doing it once more. There is something worst than showing his weakness to others.
David's worst fear is reminding himself of what he did in 1877.
"I was the first one to be turned by Max. It happened in a factory incident at work. I was fixing a broken machine and it all went wrong. It crushed me. I broke four ribs. Broke my right arm in two different locations. My legs were-even if I did somehow survive it. I would never have walked again". David explained.
"I was taken back home and was just waiting to die. Men at that time who had medical knowledge could only do so much. All I was given was medicine to help, but nothing could stop that pain. That's when Max came. He claimed he could help me and I wanted that help. I needed to get better and I told him I would do anything. I would take anything. That's when he fed me his blood".
David stopped as he rubbed his chin, his eyes looking to somewhere on the other side of the cave. David couldn't sit any longer and stood up as he walked away from them, shoving his one hand in his pocket.
"I don't know how long I was asleep for but it was late at night. I felt fine. The pain was gone, but something was off. I could hear every detail and I was just...so thirsty". David moved his head a bit, looking at Ophelia for a moment.
"Evangeline". David croaked out. His hand in his pocket pulled out a vintage pocket photo, opening it.
On one side was a worn out black and white photo, but he could still make it out. He could always see his Evangeline.
She had beautiful blonde hair with soft blue eyes. Her skin was fair and she had a small mole just above her right lip.
"Evangeline was my wife. She was upstairs and I could hear her heartbeat. It was a blur of what really happened in that moment. She was sitting on a chair, reading poetry. She always loved poetry". David told Ophelia, still turned away from the group as he smiled down at the picture of his wife.
"She was shocked to see me up. As she should have been. She said-"
"David? How are you standing up? You should be resting".
Evangeline placed her book down as she stood up, walking over to stand in front of her husband, looking at him in shock. Her hand rested on his shoulder as she examined his features.
There was dried blood still on his clothes from the incident and he looked in a daze.
"David?" Evangeline questioned.
All David could hear was her heartbeat pounding in her chest. He swore he could hear the blood moving throughout her veins as well.
"I-I'm fine, love. Just-"
"Just tired. I told her". David swallowed harshly.
"Next thing I knew I saw her vein pulsing in her neck and I couldn't help myself. I dug my fangs in her neck. She screamed. Begged me to stop but I couldn't. She fought. She fought so hard".
David finally pulled away from Evangeline's neck, blood dripping down from his chin as he looked down at Evangeline's still figure.
"Eva?" David whispered out as he looked at her empty eyes staring at the ceiling above. David let out a shaky breath as he dropped to the floor with her in his arms.
"No. No. No. I'm sorry. Please wake up". David begged as he ran his hand through her blonde hair. "Please, love". David cried out as he looked to her mutilated neck that was still dripping blood on the wooden floor.
"Please wake up. I'm sorry. I didn't mean too. I didn't mean to hurt you". David continued to beg, crying as he pulled her body close to his, rocking her back and forth.
"Mommy?" A child's voice rang in David's ears.
"My sweet Evangeline wasn't the only one that I killed that night, Ophelia". David told her, a single tear falling down his face as he looked from Evangeline's photo to Louis. His son.
"I tried to tell him everything was going to be alright but he was smart for a seven year old. He was confused but scared, seeing me in this state. I tried to help him. I really tried, but that hunger took over again".
David closed the vintage pocket photo and put it back in his pocket, shakily, turning back around as he slowly made his way back to the others.
"I may have asked to be turned, but I didn't know that it would've cost me everything. I know that I thrive about this lifestyle and have cruel intentions. But, when you have been a vampire for as long as I have, you stray further and further away from humanity. There will come a day where I won't feel pain for what I have done, but that day isn't today".
Ophelia didn't know what to say. She never expected for David's story to be a painful one. She wasn't close to him either and didn't know if she should say something or just be quiet. She looked to Marko to only see him looking in his lap with a grave expression.
An awkward silence filled the cave. David stayed standing, looking at the ground once more. Ophelia looked up at David as she did what she felt was right. She pushed herself off the couch and made her way over to him.
David looked up at Ophelia as the two held eye contact for a moment before Ophelia pulled him into her, hugging him tightly.
David was surprised by the action but he slowly wrapped his arms around her. For once in a long ass time. He appreciated this gesture.
And all Ophelia could think was that Marko was right.
David is secretly huggable.
**I freaken loved writing David's backstory. Let me make a prequel movie already. Screw the sequels**
