Chapter 10: Already Gone
"The year was 1907".
Dwayne's voice broke the silence.
David took Ophelia's spot on the couch while Ophelia sat on the arm part of the couch, next to him. Every once and awhile, her arm brushed against his jacket.
"My family never had it easy. Especially when you're part Native American". Dwayne say further in his seat.
"Ever heard of the Monongah mining disaster?" Dwayne looked over to where Ophelia sat. Ophelia shook her head.
"It was a coal mine fire that killed 362 miners on December 6, 1907". Dwayne explained slowly. "To this day it is known as the worst mining disaster in American history". Dwayne paused.
"The thing is. I wasn't a causality. I actually left sixteen minutes exact before it happened. I was told by numerous strangers that I should have been killed too. Guess you could say survivors guilt got to me." Dwayne looked away from Ophelia and just stared at his feet.
"Then it just got worst from there. Others blamed me for the accident, when it was a coal mine fire. People just wanted to pointed the blame at someone and of course it fell on me, because of my background and what I looked like". Dwayne clenched his jaw. Taking a minute to compose himself.
"Then one night they set fire to my house where me, my mother, and younger sister were inside. Luckily, none of us were hurt. But it could've been worst. After that I needed to do something. I had to protect my family. So..." Dwayne looked to where David was sitting next to Ophelia.
"From some luck, I found David. Then he got Max and I drank the blood and my first kill was one of the guys that helped set fire to my house". Dwayne's hands clasped one another as his nails dug into his skin.
"I told my sister what I was, mostly because I knew she could keep a secret but I also needed her to invite me in the house". A smile appeared on his lips, but only for a moment.
"I don't know how long it was. Maybe a little over a month. My mom was the one that found out and didn't take it well. She called me a-"
"Demon!" Dwayne's mother shouted as she pointed at him. "I've heard about what's been going on in town but I didn't think my son would've been the one behind it". His mother took a few steps back from him.
"I had to do something to protect you. To protect all of you!" Dwayne felt his temper come out.
"No. You're a demon. You will destroy us all".
"I would never hurt anyone that didn't deserve it". Dwayne stood his ground.
"How did you even get in this house?" His mother was basically asking herself. The two not noticing Bea, Dwayne's sister hiding in the doorframe, hearing everything.
"He's still Dwayne". Bea finally spoke, stepping fully in view.
"Bea!" Their mother scolded and then turned to Dwayne. "I want you out".
"What?" Dwayne asked.
"You're no longer my son. My son is dead".
Dwayne's stomach dropped at her words as he took a harsh swallow. "Mom". Dwayne started.
"No. I am no longer your mother. I do not want you here. You will only bring death, especially to your sister".
Dwayne's eyes widened at his mothers words. "I would never hurt Bea!" Dwayne shouted at her, anger and hurt laced in his voice.
"Get out! And never come back. If you don't leave, I will tell everyone in this horrible town and they will come after you. Leave".
"Don't leave". Bea cried out as she ran over to Dwayne, their mother tried to stop her but couldn't.
"Please don't leave, Dwayne". Bea begged as she clung onto her brother. Dwayne didn't want to go. He didn't. But he knew it would be worse if he stayed.
"I have to go Bea". Dwayne said sadly as he pulled away from her, kneeling on the ground as his hands were holding onto her arms.
He felt tears well in his eyes as he looked at his little sister. She had tears already falling down her face.
"I don't want you to leave. Please don't". Bea whined, letting out a cry.
"I have to Bee". Dwayne used her nickname. "I got to go, I'm sorry". Dwayne gave her one last, long hug before he pulled away and headed out of the house. Not wanting to see the state of his sister. He didn't care about getting any of his belongings. He had to go and if he didn't leave now, he wouldn't.
"Maybe I should've stayed". Dwayne looked back to Ophelia. "I wonder what would've happened if I stayed. Leaving, I could still hear Bee's cries and pleads for me to stay. That was one moment I wished I wasn't a vampire. That damn hearing". Dwayne shook his head.
"I still kept tabs on Bee. She never moved out of Virginia. She married some guy. But-". Dwayne shook his head.
"She died at the age of twenty from childbirth. Something went wrong and she bled out". Dwayne's eyes moved all around the cave as his eyebrows knitted together.
"I think that's why I don't talk much anymore...
What if I didn't ask David?
What if I didn't ask Bee to invite me in?
What if I didn't shout?"
What if? What if? What if?
A chair was slammed on the ground roughly. Paul turned it around and sat on it, sitting on it backwards as his arms were on the backrest.
"Alright. Since these two brought the mood down-no offense". He directed the last part to David and Dwayne.
"Now it's my turn". Paul smiled widely.
Paul was sitting directly in front of Ophelia while David left his spot, not wanting to be so close to Paul.
"1927. At least I didn't have to live through the Great Depression as a human". Paul slapped his knee, laughing. "That would have sucked".
"Even back then I was a complete druggie. I did anything and everything. Like, how could you not? It was the Roaring Twenties! Best time ever". Paul explained and then started to count on his finger.
"The drugs. The alcohol. The parties. The drugs. The flappers. Did I mention the drugs?" Paul smiled widely.
"No. You didn't". Marko said sarcastically from his spot.
Paul waved him off and then flipped him off.
"And I was already from California. Hollywood to be exact so of course it was crazy. Let's just say I had a little too much fun one night and pulled a Great Gatsby and basically died in a pool".
Paul's body hit the pool as his body started to sink. That was when a pair of arms grabbed the back of his suit, yanking him out of the pool and onto the concrete.
"Bastard had too much". David said, being the one that pulled Paul out.
"Why not just let him die?" Dwayne asked David. David looked up at David as his hand grabbed the vile of Max's blood in his coat pocket.
"He seems he could have potential"
"I was very wrong with the potential part". David told Ophelia as he looked at Paul.
"You know you made the right decision". Paul smiled widely.
"Anyways. To finish it off since I'm tired of telling it. I did my first kill. Was some flapper chick and boom! Vampire Paul and I can do as much drugs as I want and not die. Happy ending!"
"That was the shortest, weirdest story I have ever heard". Marko told Paul.
Paul gave Ophelia an innocent look before he vamp sped out of the chair, causing it to rock back and forth from the fast movement. Paul soon tackled Marko, sending the two over the edge of the couch.
"Hey!" Marko sounded.
"Christ". David whispered, rubbing his face with annoyance.
"Can you two-" Ophelia started out slowly but was cut off when Marko came flying towards her due to Paul using his extra strength on him.
Ophelia who seemed to forget of her new abilities just sat there with wide eyes. Luckily for her, Dwayne sped over, grabbing her and moving her out of the way before Marko could knock into her.
"Thank you". Ophelia said in a soft voice as she let go of Dwayne's arms.
Dwayne just nodded.
Marko quickly jumped back up as he pointed to Paul who stood on the other side of the couch, laughing his stupid ass off.
"Fine! You want a short story. You got it". Marko flapped his arms around before sitting on the couch again.
Paul whacked the side of Marko's head as he walked by him.
"Asshole". Marko muttered.
Marko turned to Ophelia and then patted the spot next to him, gesturing for her to sit.
Ophelia plopped down next to him.
"I was turned not too long ago. 1947".
"I was like two". Ophelia said.
Marko's mouth was opened slightly as he just looked at her and then blinked. "Yeah. That's weird".
Ophelia smiled, her teeth showing a bit at his comment.
"I don't regret drinking the blood. That's why David picked me. I was a thrill seeker. Always chaotic and doing stuff I shouldn't be doing. David told me he could give me that and so I drank the blood and then I was at the wrong place at the wrong time". Marko rolled his eyes. He was always annoyed what happened.
"I went into a gas station, some dude robbed it and I got shot. Luckily, I drank the blood a few hours before or I would've died right then if it wasn't for the healing. I then ate the guy that shot me". Marko shook his head back and forth with a proud smile. His smile then fell as he looked at the ceiling.
"Then the cashier. No witnesses". Marko nodded.
"That was not short". Paul pointed to him.
"Shorter than yours".
The two began to bicker back and forth. Dwayne wasn't paying attention to them and David just groaned, leaving the cave with his vampire speed.
Ophelia just took their stories all in.
