Chapter 1: Where it all Started

Summer of 1969

Santa Carla.  Murder Capital of the World.  But that didn't stop it from being a place for tourist.  Especially the Boardwalk.  The Boardwalk was where most action was at.  Especially at night.

You had all the different groups there.  Sometimes they would stay within their groups.  You would hardly see them branch out.  But when you did it was hard to miss who was the newest member.

Locals could easily tell who was a tourist or not.  They didn't know everyone but they certainly knew a familiar face when they saw one.

"David. Do you see that?" Paul nudged David's shoulder as they all looked through the crowd to where Paul was looking at.

A woman caught his attention. Someone around their age with brown hair. She was breathing heavily and they could easily tell her eyes were changing from brown to yellow.

"Did Max change her?" Marko asked.

"You would think he would tell us". Paul rolled his eyes. "She keeps doing that and she's going to expose all of us. Especially if she freaks out". Paul told them.

"She's already freaking out". David answered calmly but with annoyance.

They watched as she grabbed an older man with some force and dragged him to the end of the boardwalk where it was dead.

"Wow. All you had to do was just ask". The man flirted and the woman just breathed out heavily, trying to keep herself under control. "Was there something you needed? Something special?"

The woman shook slightly as she kept her grip on the man. "I am just so hungry".

"That's ok. I have something you'll like". The man said seductively.

The woman only gave him a bored look before nodding. "You're right. You do". Her face morphed and she dug into his neck while he screamed. No one could hear his screams over the thrilled ones. The only people who could were the four boys.

"Shit, man". Paul came to a quick stop as he looked at the scene in front of him. As did the others.

The girl was kneeled down in front of the man who had his neck torn out. She pulled away, blood over her face as she looked back to them then at the man she just killed.

"I don't know what happened". She muttered sadly.

"Who turned you?" David asked and she shook her head, not even looking at him. "Who turned you?" David asked with more force in his voice as he walked in front of her.

"Come on David". Marko said. "She's scared". Marko already had a soft spot for her. He remembered how it was when he first turned. Didn't know what was happening and who to look too.

"What are you talking about? Turned into wha-"

"A VAMPIRE!" David screamed at her, making her jump back in her spot.

Paul went over to David and much to his dismay of trying to shove his hands off his shoulders you stopped.

"David, man. Let's just all calm down. I'm sure it's fine". Paul tried to be calm but it wasn't helping David's case.

"Was it Max?" David asked. "Huh?"

"I don't even know a Max".

David muttered curse words under his breath while walking away. "Come on boys. Let's go". David walked a few steps away from them before he suddenly stopped. When he turned around they were in their same positions. "Did you hear me?" He asked them.

"We can't just leave her". Paul said softly, gesturing to her.

Marko then moved and went by her side as he moved some of her hair away from the blood, telling her everything would be alright.

David then looked to Dwayne who gave him a knowing look. David groaned then pinched the bridge of his nose with his gloved hand.

"Fine".

Paul silently cheered to himself while Marko stood up and held his hands out for her.  When she grabbed his hands he pulled her to her feet.  "Up you go".

"We're going to Max.  He'll have a say in this".  David told them and Paul groaned.

Marko grabbed a rag he had on them and handed it to her where the began to wipe the blood off of her.

"What's your name?" Marko asked and she looked at him with some uncertainly. Marko sensed it and gestured to himself.

"I'm Marko. Over there is Paul. That's Dwayne and the big scary one who is secretly huggable is David". Marko introduced them.

Once she was done with the rag, she gently handed it back to him.

"Ophelia".

"I like that name".  Paul pointed out and she smiled at his comment.

"Ok.  I'll get rid of this.  I'll meet you guys back at the video store after I'm done".  Paul told them as he went to pick up the dead man, only to have him groan.

"Dead dude not dead."  Paul stepped back as he had his hands up in surrender.

"Well, Ophelia.  Guess it's how you look at this situation.  You didn't kill him so you're still only half".  David told her seriously before walking away, Dwayne following behind him.

"What does that mean?"  Ophelia asked Marko.

"Uhhhhhh.  So, you're only half vampire.  In order to become like us.  A full one.  You have to make your first kill".

Ophelia didn't say anything after he said that. She just stood there while Marko looked at Paul who gave him a look that read. Later

"You two should get to the store. I'll take care of this loser". Paul picked up the man and then quickly left.

•••

"Never".

"What do you mean never?  She drank vampire blood and last time I checked.  None of us did it.  So it has to be you".  David almost shouted at Max.

Max looked to Ophelia again then shook his head.  "I didn't do it David.  This must mean there's other vampires here".  Max sighed before going back around the counter.

"What do we do?"  David asked, following him while Dwayne held up a record to Marko who shook his head.  Ophelia was walking around the store, looking at the different music.

"With the other vampires or the girl?"  Max asked.

"Both".  David immediately answered.

Max fixed the glasses on his face before talking again.  "As what I see so far the other vampires aren't a threat.  So nothing.  But with the girl, she is your responsibility".

"Max-"

"David."  Max looked at him seriously.  "She's half vampire.  Get her to kill someone.  She can't stay half vampire forever. She'll either turn or her body will finally shut down and she'll die.  She's your sister now".  Max tapped his hands against the counter.  "Now get out of my store".

"Where's Ophelia?"  Paul asked once he entered the store, seeing she wasn't there.

"She's with- Dwayne.  Marko.  Where is she?"  David asked.

"She's right beside...me".  Marko paused the last part when he looked next to him and was met with an empty space.

"Great. You three had one job and she's gone". David threw his hands in the air.

"I was busy taking care of not dead yet man". Paul defended himself.

"I don't know how to babysit!" Marko screeched.

"She's probably snacking on someone else". Dwayne shrugged.

The four started to yell at one another. Blaming on whose fault it was while Max shook his head at the sight.

Ophelia came out of an aisle with a record in her hand and was asking a boy who worked there a question about it. When she heard the bickering she walked over to them.

"What's wrong?"

"Where were you?" David asked harshly.

Ophelia didn't say anything as she only smiled and showed him the record. "I like The Monkees".

"I think they're alright". Marko nodded a bit while David grabbed the record and put it on the counter before pushing Ophelia out.

"Come on, we're leaving".
