19 I Look Around
I went to school as though nothing was wrong. Everything was wrong, and the idiot was still following me around. I couldn't even take a piss without the dude following me to the door. I was so done. I pulled Ames into the girls' bathroom with me.
"What the hell Lukas!?" She screeched as a couple girls screamed and ran out of there. I locked the door after they left, seeing as my bodyguard was glaring at me outside the door.
"I am going crazy Ames. You gotta help me." I begged her with a serious face.
"Well you could just ask me at lunch or something." She griped angrily, fixing her uniform cardigan where I'd pulled it.
"I'm sorry, but I can't. The idiot out there won't let me go anywhere alone and listens in to all my conversations." I told her with a pout. She looked at me pityingly.
"That sucks. I guess your 'rents are pretty mad huh?" She consoled me with a pat. I nodded.
"You have no idea. Listen, could you come over to my house to hang out so we can talk? I really need your help with something." I said in a hurry. I knew my time in here was limited.
"Yeah I guess. I might have time after school if you want." She told me. I brightened up.
"Perfect!" I was interrupted as a banging on the bathroom door sounded.
"Lukas! Get out of there." It was the idiot calling. I rolled my eyes and we left the bathroom.
"See you after school." She said with a wave, going to her next class. I waved and then turned to see the glare being leveled at me.
"What? You would have interrupted and not let her come. Now she's coming anyways." I stuck out my tongue at him and went to class. He wouldn't stop glaring at me. I ignored the idiot though and finished my lessons.
"Ready?" Ames walked up to me at the end of the day and I linked arms with her to go to the car.
"Sir, the girl can't come in the car." The idiot said. I smiled at him and shrugged.
"That's too bad, because I am not getting in if she isn't coming with me." We had a stare down for a good two full minutes before the door was opened. I motioned for Ames to slide in, and she did. I followed after.
"What is with this guy?" She whispered to me quietly.
"Oh, he just has a poker up his ass because my parents pay him too much." I replied nonchalantly.
He glared at me over his shoulder. That was another strike against him. He never sat in the back. He always made me feel like a criminal being taken to the station by cops. He sat up front with the new driver and wouldn't speak to me.
He was a dickhead. Probably afraid to screw up because of the rumours going around the house. Ones my father probably started to make Sasha and I look bad. Only the folks who knew us better didn't look at me with pity and horror.
"Don't even think about bringing her in your room." The idiot said when we got out of the car. I laughed mockingly at him.
"Too late!" I shouted suddenly, grabbing my friend's hand and dragging her at a run into the house. Thank god she wears sneakers! She giggled as we went up the stairs and I pulled her into my room, with the idiot on our heels.
I slammed the door in his face, locked it, and then dragged a chair to put under the handle. It actually made me chuckle as he pounded on the outside for a full minute. I turned to an equally amused Ames.
"You are going to be in so much trouble." She commented with humour. I nodded.
"Yep. So worth it." I sat cross legged on my bed and she sat in front of me the same.
"So, what did you want to go to all this trouble for?" She was looking at me curiously. I sighed dramatically.
"Actually, I am madly in love with you and just wanted to get you alone." I joked theatrically. She let out a pfft and rolled her eyes.
"No. Really. Why'd you want to talk?" She was trying to level me, and I let her. I sobered up right away and seriously spoke.
"I want to run away. For real this time. Buuut, I'm going to need your help to do it." I looked at her wide, shocked eyes and hoped she was down for it.
"Seriously?" She deadpanned. I nodded.
"Seriously." I stated firmly. She nodded thoughtfully.
"Okay. Okay I'm not going to ask too many questions, just so I can actually say I don't know anything. I just want to make sure you have a plan." She replied hesitantly. I gestured for her to go ahead.
"Do you have money?" She asked, I shook my head no but reached into my back pocket and pulled out my wallet to hand to her.
"Nope. I need you to withdraw some. That's part of the plan. I'll have to use cash so they can't trace me." I told her. She sighed.
"Do you have a destination in mind?" She continued. I nodded.
"Yes. I should be able to get to where I need to go with what you get out for me. I looked up the tickets." I assured her.
"And eat too? You aren't forgetting anything?" She asked. I nodded again.
"Yes, and eat too. I was hoping you could help me smuggle some clothes out of the house to wear as well." My pleading eyes were working overtime now. She sighed.
"Alright, fine. How do we do this?" She folded her hands in her lap and I went over the plan. She looked impressed. I could see the wheels turning in her head. "You should go tonight. I can get to the bank and meet you at the theatre."
"Really? Are you sure?" I was surprised. She smiled at me.
"I'm sure. If your folks catch wind of suspicious behaviour then they will lock you down harder before you can get away." She looked at me knowingly. I was impressed this time.
"What about my clothes?" I bit my lip. She laughed.
"What do you want to bring? Get them out now." She shooed me to hurry and I pulled out a couple of t-shirts, a pair of jeans, a pair of khakis, some underwear and socks. Laid out on the bed it didn't look like a lot. "Good, pack light."
"How are you going to get all this out of the house though?" I worried, looking at her small backpack. She grinned. She took the two t-shirts into the bathroom with her, and when she came back out, she looked a little fatter.
"What do you think?" She asked with a grin. I laughed and shook my head.
"I think you eat too much." I teased her. She rolled her eyes and managed to shove the two pairs of pants into her bag. Apparently she didn't need the shoes she had in there, so she chucked them into my closet rather than try to fit both.
"Now, what to do with the socks...." She mused. I held up a hand.
"It's alright. I can take care of the extra socks and underwear." I grinned. She made a face at me. "What?"
"Whatever you do, don't stuff your pants." She joked. I laughed again and tucked the stuff behind my pillow. I went over the passcode to my account and where to grab money from.
"Are you sure you are up for this?" I asked one more time. She nodded. I thanked her profusely and then braced to let her out. The chair moved, and we left the room to go downstairs.
The idiot was glaring at me while I let Ames out the door. Our new driver was still parked out front, so I had him drive her home. I smirked at the bodyguard when I came back inside.
"You shouldn't play with other girls if you already have a girlfriend, sir." That sentence was the most human that came from him, it was a pity it was so screwed up.
"I don't have a girlfriend. My parents are whoring me out." I replied sarcastically. I went back to my room and shut the door. I had to get ready for my fake date. I showered, got cleaned up, got dressed in a few layers and checked out the result in the mirror.
The boxer briefs weren't too much thicker, and the khakis I chose to wear were normally loose on me so it didn't look too unusual. I had a laced pair of boots that could fit two pairs of socks, barely, if I undid the laces a little.
I decided to wear a thicker jacket, and hid the other pair of socks in the inside pockets as flat as I could make them. My wallet went in a front pocket, and it was a little lighter than usual without my debit card or extras kept inside.
I shoved a comb in the hand pocket, and wondered whether or not I should also take some other toiletries. It was better to pack light. I brought my travel toothbrush and paste, but left a razor behind.
I could pretend it was for the cinema popcorn if I was caught. I took a deep breath and looked at myself in the mirror. Was I really going to do this? I nodded at myself and then turned at the knock on my door.
"Coming." I called out. I waltzed to the door when it opened to show the idiot scowling as usual.
"Ready for your date?" He asked without waiting for a reply before he showed me out to the car. I took another deep breath as we pulled away from the house. We were picking up Jessica from her place first.
I was polite, and a bit sad that she seemed so excited. Her hands clung onto my arm and she kept glancing over at me with hopeful eyes. This was why I didn't want to do this. She didn't deserve the disappointment when she found out the truth.
"I'm so glad you texted me to come out. I was starting to think you weren't interested." She said to me in the back seat quietly. I glared up at the front seat accusingly.
"Yeah, it's just a movie right? I don't mind." I said to her mildly. I was trying to down play it, in hopes she wouldn't get her hopes up too much. I really didn't want to hurt her, and I also needed to keep tonight platonic.
"Sure." She must have thought I had other meaning though, thanks to whoever had texted her from my number. She glanced at the guys up front and gave me a sly smile. A wink told me she didn't get it.
I sighed and went through the motions. If I didn't, then the idiot might suspect something. When we got to the theatre and went for tickets, he moved to follow us. I lifted a brow and glared at him.
"Really? You are NOT going to watch the movie with us." I stood and folded my arms over my chest in challenge. He stared me down.
"Is there a problem babe?" Jessica asked sweetly. I cringed internally but used it as an opportunity.
"No, I was just explaining to my bodyguard that he can wait outside." I said with a firm tone. She looked at him with confusion.
"Oh okay." She replied with uncertainty.
"You wouldn't want me to tell my parents that you screwed up my 'date' now would you?" I whispered under my breath. The idiot frowned, but backed off. "That's what I thought."
We bought our tickets and food, obviously her choice of movie, and went into the dark theatre. I sat in the middle, and tried not to fall asleep during the weird drama she had chosen. The odd glance at my watch told me that I was close to time.
I started fidgeting in my seat, more and more. She was giving me a sidelong glance, and it was not amorous but annoyed. I finally leaned towards her to whisper in her ear, hoping not to disturb anyone.
"Sorry. I have to go to the washroom." I apologized and then patted her arm. She nodded. I got up and sidled out of the seats. Once out of the theatre screening room, I cautiously made my way to the men's room.
The idiot was out in the lobby playing on his phone. I caught a quick glimpse of him before ducking in the door. I took off my jacket and then ducked into the stall with the 'out of order' sign on it with a push.
A backpack with my things in it was hanging on the back of the stall door. I stuffed the other socks inside, and removed the extra layers to tuck in also. I switched my shirt and pants for a t-shirt and jeans.
I smiled at the ball cap, oversize sweatshirt, and glasses that Ames had thoughtfully put inside. Changing into all of those made me look like a whole new person. I shoved my jacket inside and put my wallet with a few new bills into my back pocket.
I looked at my phone in consternation. There was no way I could take it with me. I knew I would be tracked down in a matter of hours if I did. I put it down behind the tank in the washroom.
Then I slipped out of the toilets and into the hallway that led to the exit doors. The small map on the back of the 'out of order' sign showed another staff exit on the hallway leading to the right.
A guy was there with a swipe card, and he let me through the break room to the exit. He nodded at me when I thanked him. After a quick glance to either side, I followed her instructions to get to the nearest bus stop.
It wasn't until I was sitting on the bus to get into downtown that I started to relax a little. I figured it wouldn't be until the movie was ending that my date would panic and my bodyguard figured out I was gone.
I had half an hour to get on the bus out of town. This bus was almost empty, so I peeked into my bag to see exactly how much money she gave me. There was an envelope full of cash. Had to be a few grand in there.
A little note from Ames was tucked with the bills. Get rid of your watch too. Good luck! I stared at the band on my wrist in fear. Seriously? I undid the clasping on it. With the envelope buried back under my clothes, I got off the bus early. I was in front of a club that's lights were obnoxious and music loud enough to hear from a block away. I went up to the bouncer.
"Hey dude, I'm heading to my girlfriend's. Can you hold onto this so the 'rents can't find me?" I slipped a twenty with the watch and the guy just rolled his eyes before slipping it into his pocket.
I grinned and ran the rest of the way to the bus terminal. There was no line up at this time of night, but I was running short of time. I bought my ticket and jogged over to the waiting dock. Time ticked by at a snail's pace while I waited for my bus to arrive.
Would they catch me anyways? Did I forget something? What if Sasha wasn't there when I got there? What if I was looking for the wrong people? So many doubts and worries plagued my mind.
Then the bus was there, and I could only hope.
