Chapter 1: How It All Began
Emily P.O.V.
"Breaking news! The new product by Halloween Is Our Specialty Inc. has spread a virus! Victims of this virus became animalistic creatures, not sensitive to old relations. They have no recollection of family or friends. It has been rumoured that the company who produced this product did this on purpose! Stay tuned for more information."
Me and my family watched the television in awe. Were there really zombies on the loose? Was me and my family going to stay safe? All of these questions were swirling through my brain while my mom, dad, and my little brother Caleb just talked like they heard nothing.
"Are you guys kidding me?!" I shouted, causing them to look at me. "There are hungry zombies roaming around and you guys just want to sit and chat?"
"Emily," started my dad, "it's fine. There are probably not even any zombies." My mom and Caleb nodded.
"Yeah. It's probably just something that they're doing for Halloween," my mom said, playing with her fingers.
"But what if it isn't?" I pressed. I tended to be very argumentative at times. I always want my point to be proven before I give up. "What if the zombies are real? It's not impossible you kno--"
"Shut up, Emily!" My dad shouted. "Just... shut up." He slumped on the couch, his head in his hands.
"David, don't tell her to shut up," my mom sighed. "That's not just one of your little friends, that's your daughter."
"Exactly, Sarah, so I may talk to her as I please," his voice rising a bit.
"Well, you can at least show her a little respect!" My mom and dad went at it. My head started throbbing. I screamed and ran out the back door.
I ran like the wind. I ran through my yard, into the woods and past the trees. I ran until my legs ached and I fell onto the ground. I scooted towards the nearest tree and leaned my back against it. Breathing heavily, I rubbed my temples, trying to soothe the pain. I leaned my head back against the tree trunk and relaxed. Then I heard a noise. I grabbed my locket.
It wasn't just any little-woodland-creature-moving-around-in-the-bushes kind of noise. There was a crunch, then a moan. And it was all to the right of me. I turned my head very slowly toward the sound, hoping it's not what I think it is. But it was.
It was a zombie. A real life zombie! Limping toward me. It was bald with part of it's head removed. The left side of it's face was peeled off, so it showed all bone. And it's eyeballs, ugh! Don't get me started on those. It was like they were staring right into my soul! It's clothes were torn and it was barefoot, with skeletal feet.
I got up quick and ran. I ran like the wind. Once I got tired, I stopped to catch my breath and looked back. I had lost it, but I was too far into the woods to turn back. Then I remembered my family. No, I couldn't turn back. I don't even know where I am! I must continue forward.
I walked forward, cautiously looking around. I gulped and clutched my locket.
Is this really happening? Why to me? Why here? Why now? Why not... in Russia or something? What if the zombies get me? I don't want to turn into that.
All types of questions were running through my mind. But during that time, I approached a building it looked like some kind of day care.
There must be food in there. Let's go check it out.
I walked inside, cautiously. I looked around and saw there was a messy playroom with blood everywhere. I can't even describe how disturbed I was.
I turned the corner and found a hallway leading to different rooms. I walked down it looking into different rooms and towards the back was a kitchen. I walked into it and walked toward the cabinet and opened it. I found a whole bunch of canned foods.
Jackpot.
I looked around for something to put it in. Then, I found a backpack. I grabbed it and started stashing it. But I saved some room for some extra supplies. I looked around and saw a flashlight, a box of matches, and a pocket knife on the table. That was a very big pocket knife, might I add. I grabbed the flashlight and turned it on to see if it worked. A light shown on the floor. I turned it off and threw it in the bag, along with the matches. I picked up the pocket knife and placed it in my pocket.
Then I remembered the cans of food.
How was I gonna get them open?
I searched the drawers and found a can opener. I threw it in the bag. I zipped it and threw it on my back. And can I tell you, that thing was heavy! I walked out of the room and out the door, into the woods.
Not gonna lie, I was terrified. I mean, I'm stuck in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, for Christ's sake! First things first, I need to find secure shelter. Or build it, depending on how long it takes for the sun to go down. I continued to wander when I heard a sound. I stopped dead in my tracks and pulled out my pocket knife.
"Who's there?" I called. Then, three zombies came tumbling out from between the trees, coming straight toward me.
Shit.
What am I gonna do now?
