Chapter 16 - Surprises Aren't Always Good

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know how some people say that they don't like surprises, how the idea of just not knowing what's going to happen next rubs them the wrong way?
Well those people have a point, because surprises aren't always good.
Khal and Hailey were still in Kiara's room with Marquése, waiting for her to come back.
"Uh, its getting late. Should it be taking this long?" Marquése asks
"Well as you said history."
"I-I don't think that she would tell them about that right now. This would just be telling them about me, you know, that she found me."
"Yeah you're right. Maybe we should go check it out."
"Uh, I don't know about that, it would look rather suspicious." Hailey adds in
"You're probably right. I'm sure she'll be back soon."
Marquése didn't want his thoughts to run wild, so he did anything to keep his mind off the fact that she wasn't there with him.
He was pacing the room when his belly grumbled in the silence of the room.
"Grrrr"
They all raised their heads looking at him.
"Could you guys get me some food?
I'm starving."
"Uh of course. I'll go."
Hailey exists the room carefully, going to retrieve something for Marquése to eat.
It was better she go because if she got caught in the house with food it wouldn't seem so suspicious because she worked there.
"I wish she would just walk through that door and tell me that everything went ok."
"Yeah me too buddy."
Hailey knocks on the door, telling them that it was her but as soon as she broke the seal of the room something hit her.
"Marquése."
The fear in her eye triggered their reaction
"What's wrong?"
"Your scent, I-I can smell you. How didn't you smell him Khal?!"
"I don't know maybe I just got use to it. We're locked in here, I just don't know ok."
"Oh no."
"He needs more oil. I have to go and get it right now."
Khal runs out of the room in a hurry going to retrieve the oil from the healer.
They were exiting and entering the room too frequently; this causes a higher probability that they might get caught.
"Here's the food."
"Thank you."
Marquése accepts the outstretched plate of food in her hand with glee and started eating.
Hailey watched him eat for a while before she spoke up.
"Wow, you were really hungry." She laughs at him.
"Yeah i guess a beast needs more energy than most other creatures."
"You are no beast."
He looks up into her eyes momentarily staring but refrains from uttering a single word to her.
Khal was walking around searching for the healer when he saw one of his friends passing by. He grabs onto his hand to stop him.
"Hey have you seen the healer?"
"Uh, yeah she was in her house."
"Ok thanks man."
Khal walks into the healers very small house, casting the cloth at the entrance aside.
"Celestia."
"You're back soon. Used up all my oil already?"
"Thank Goddess you're here. Yes it's finished I need more."
"Ha, young one it isn't like water, I don't have stacks of it packed away so I can't just dip some up and give it to you.
It takes time."
"I don't really have a lot of time Celestia. I need it now."
"Hmm I didn't hear a Please."
"Please" Khal pleaded and she smiled
"Well that's much better. Lucky for you I had a feeling that you would need some more so I made some. Here you go."
"Oh thanks you so much, you're truly a gift."
"Oh I know."
Khal smiles at the sweet older woman as he exits her small home.
He had always admired her from the very first day he met her as a small child.
The thought of urgency return to his mind and he takes off running.
He gets to Kiara's door and didn't even bother to knock. He just barged in giving the pair a fright.
"Here, use it fast"
Marquése took the small vial from him quickly and absentmindedly started to rub it onto him.
"Thank Goddess she had made some more for me."
A quick knock came to the door and a rough voice shouted out,
"Khal!"
All their eyes turned to saucers.
"Khal I know you're in there come out!"
"Hide" he whispered as softly as he possibly could to Marquése and he moved to hide in one of her closets.
When he was completely out of view Khal opened the door.
"What do you want Grant?"
Grant looks further in the room to see Hailey on the bed
"What are you two doing in here?"
"Uh"
"And why were you in such a rush?"
Khal thinks fast, coming up with an excuse in the nick of time.
"I uh, I heard that Kiara was back and I wanted to see her you know. So I was running to c-come see her."
"Oh, I understand but you know you shouldn't be in here without he princess."
"I thought she was in here. Do you know where she is?"
"Uh, I... cant say."
"What do you mean you can't say? What the he'll is going on Grant?!"
"I shouldn't have seen so you can't say I'm the one that told you."
"What happened?"
"I saw them take her... to the dungeon."
Grant let out the last of his sentence with a sad sigh. He had just got his princess back, he couldn't understand why they had put her in the dungeons of all places.
"No! That can't be."
"It's the truth, I-I have to go and so do you. You can't be in here."
"I can't believe this."
"I'm sorry Khal, but we have to go."
Hailey gets up all the bed going to the closet and whispering,
"Marquése. I'm sorry but don't do anything stupid ok. Just stay in here tonight."
Hailey soft voice reaches him but it's like he could hardly hear her.
They exit the room in shock themselves wondering what could possibly cause this.
They close the door behind them and it becomes quiet.
Throughout all of this Marquése was burning to say something but he couldn't. Somehow it's like he was numb hearing all those things.
They locked her up? Because of him?
He was so shocked by this that he didn't even know when he came out of the closet; sitting on the bed.
Marquése lays back, rubbing his hand on Kiara's soft sheets. They smelled like her and it was his only comfort. He breath in and out slowly, trying to calm himself down and listen to what Hailey said.
He couldn't do anything stupid right now or else they would both end up in the dungeons and that wouldn't serve anyone any good.
Marquése waited in Kiara's room, looking for her, besides his better judgment that she wasn't coming.
This was most definitely one of the worst surprises that he had ever experienced in his life.
He stayed in that position, on his back until it became late, the sun setting.
He laid there thinking to himself that he had just found her and they wanted to take her way from him already.
The young wolf fell asleep, in the same position he laid in; the only thought on his mind, his mate.
In the depths of sleep, the world around him shook, and that night, the moon bled.
