Chapter Four

Chapter 4: Tempest beneath the Storm

He was left alone.

No one cared about him, and he supposed he deserved it. After all, it was his fault, to begin with when he joined them.

He didn't want to, the thought of killing innocents, innocent people who were really the people who stand up against what was wrong-terrified him.

It was the fear that kept him lashed in chains, the pure terror and the will to live, to see another day as the sun rises. He had foolishly thought that he would be spared if he had followed the rules.

It was true, he was a coward, one who could not face his fears.

What reason did he have to live? He fervently hoped for a release, a faint beam of light that could guide his path.

...

"Draco Malfoy. You are now subjected to the rulings of the Ministry at the court."

He closed his eyes.

"The judgment will begin."

He could hear their voices as they argued about his would be punishment. Looking up at the ceiling of the grand place, he was suddenly reminded of the great anguish he had heard from the small room, weeping quietly. The pang in his chest hurt like a blazing fire, his guilty conscience throb like the note of discord.

He could not face him.

"Silence!"

He did not have the courage to look into their eyes, knowing he had betrayed them.

"It has been decided."

The pair of emerald green eyes haunted him even in his sleep, branded within the depths of his soul.

"Draco Malfoy is relived of any punishment."

He looked up, for a moment, into the blank look in the jury's eyes.

"He will spend his last year at Hogwarts before he is free of all the regulations."

..................

Harry listened as Professor Binns droned on and on about the war between the goblins and trolls for the hoard of gold in a mine. It was a miracle how he could listen without falling asleep like he used to. But everything was different now. It was something that he would cherish, for too many things were taken from him. At least, this was one of the normal things he should be doing, instead of being a victim of the war.

He could imagine how he looked like right now, with his eyes dull and the scars that had appeared on his eye.

It was the fated morning when he woke up and saw, for the tiniest second, his face in the mirror.

He couldn't believe himself.

His right eye was still the emerald green that he knew but now marred with scars that wouldn't be visible to anyone but the keen eyes.

It was then that the mirror was broken, smashed by his fist that had found its way to it.

Sorrow and desperation gripped its vile claws upon him before fury settled down.

His last living memories of his mother were shattered into pieces. The green eyes that he inherited from her was left with one and the other marred with scars, a disability that would hinder his entire life.

He couldn't do it anymore.

But he had to.

Taking a deep breath, he took his step forward.

Yet as he walked, his heart felt empty.

...........

They took him to a place.

Was it a cruel joke?

He knew they wouldn't stand his presence. He was not worthy, his crimes hanging above him. He felt as if he was dangling above the cliff, lost.

They didn't allow him to pack his things. He would be at Hogwarts by Floo, the contempt in the guard's eyes were obvious to him. He was silent the whole time. It was his only defence against the world.

His only defiance against the urge to give up.

...........

"Did you heard? Draco's coming back."

"What? I thought he was under the rulings of the Ministry!"

"My mum's one of the witches in the Department of Crimes. The Ministry's buzzing with the news."

"I was hoping he would be sent to Azkaban, I guess my hopes are gone now."

"He's not worthy to be here. He's a traitor to Hogwarts."

"Filthy traitor..."

Hiss and spats could be heard around the Hall as the students heard the news.

Hermione frowned.

"The weasel's back? This is going to be confusing-ow!" Ron yelped as Hermione kicked him under the table.

Staring blankly at his plate, Harry felt his heart tightening, as if a hand was clenching it. It hurt him, the wave of emotion was so turbulent like a violent storm about to break, crashing upon the land itself.

Why was he like this?

Why did he hurt so much?

It couldn't be because of-

Standing up and muttering that he needed some air, he ran out of the Hall, mindless if the curious gazes that followed his movements.

"Poor Harry. He probably felt furious now that Draco's back." Someone muttered, pity evident in their voice.

......

Running out to the field, Harry breathed deeply and let out the air inside of him. It was quiet here, the whispers of the wind accompanying him as he stood there, alone.

It was suffocating inside the Great Hall, even as he gazed down at the Quidditch field beneath him.

It was where one if his happiest memories happened, when he raced across the skies on his broomstick, hand reaching out to grab the Snitch even as he saw the glimpses of Draco's face in fury-

What was wrong with him?

Shaking his head, Harry looked out to the field in front of him. It was a calm sight, the darkness hiding him from anyone else, including himself. The darkness was his friend, a disguise made to cover up humanity's ugliness among the world.

He was his own demon, in some ways more than one.

The moon came out from the clouds, illuminating the place in silvery steaks if moonlight when he froze.

Someone stood there, his back straight, his hair a pale white almost as if he was blessed by the moon itself.

Someone he wished he wouldn't see.
