Chapter 4. Back Home
We ate and began our swim to the beach. Gwyn pumped her green tail through the water with ease. I found it to be simple as well. We made it in a matter of minutes, which was strange. I'd swam to the waterfall yesterday, and that took half an hour! I shrugged and followed Gwyn behind a large rock. I held my hand over my tail and slowly clenched it into a fist. Steam rose over my tail, and it disappeared within seconds. Gwyn was staring intently at me. Confused, I stared back at her.
"Dude! Mermaids get their powers after a week! You-you can't have them now!" Gwyn whisper-shouted.
I rolled my eyes and heated Gwyn's tail off. We walked out from behind the rock. I got my phone out of my bracelet and texted my mom. There were at least 30 messages sent last night from her. I told her that I was fine and that she'd have to come to the beach. I also told her that Gwyn was going with us.
My mom said that she was on her way. Gwyn and I waited. My mom came and didn't lecture me about staying with her the whole time or anything else like that.
Time flew by, and the next thing I knew, I was sitting on the couch in my room. I was catching up on some Mako Mermaids episodes. Soon, my mom called me down for dinner. I walked downstairs and sat at the table. All of a sudden, water hit my face. Frantic, I darted to the nearest bathroom. There was a light on, and the door was locked. My tail replaced my legs.
I looked behind me. My siblings were giving me looks of shock. My parents gave me the same looks. A tear slipped down my face. The mermaid shows were nothing like this. Aria, one of my sisters, walked out of the bathroom. She paused, surveyed the scene, and pushed me into a nearby room.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Don't worry," she said, closing and locking the door to the room and plopping a water ball on her head, "I'm one, too."
