Born Again From The Flames- Next Gen

So I got inspired by this one song and created a One Shot to develop Phoenix more! If I put something in bold and Italics (Like this) on it's own, just know it's a song lyric

Third Person

"Hey! I said peanut butter AND THEN jelly! Not jelly first!"

"What's even the difference? They mash together anyways."

"WHAT'S THE-! You are an uncultured swine and should not be raising our child this way."

"I was a Dad first, I know what I'm doing!"

Phoenix snickered to himself as he listened into his two Dads bicker over making him a lunch. One of his favorite things to do was wait just outside the room making no noise, just so he could listen to the conversations that CannibalCrab and KrakenKid had. Their arguments were always petty and small, but hilarious to hear. Grudges from these never lasted over a day, and even if it did, they just acted like pouting children to each other, and Darrel would come and resolve it.

They always stopped their fighting as soon as Phoenix entered the room, so he had to wait until he was ready to interrupt to get his fill of it.

After the how to make a proper sandwich talk went on for a while, Phoenix finally slipped into the room and popped next to his Dads. He pulled his goggles up to his forehead, knowing KrakenKid always liked to look him in the eyes when they spoke.

As soon as they noticed his orange, spiky hair, all of the petty anger drained out of them and they both broke out into grins. KrakenKid quickly ruffled his hair affectionately, a giggle escaping Phoenix as he did. "Heya Kiddo. How's my favorite scientist?" Second later after the words left his mouth, panic flared in his yellow eyes and he quickly glanced around, hoping Harold wasn't around to hear him.

Phoenix couldn't stop smiling, but finally noticed a look for his other Dad, Cannibal. He quickly opened his arms up, knowing exactly what he wanted and soon was consumed by the bear hug the general gave him. Being several inches taller than him, Phoenix was smothered by the hug, but didn't mind it. He just really loved him, and had no other way of showing it, there was nothing wrong with that.

Pulling away, Cannibal was smiling from ear to ear and only let go of his sleeve a couple moments later. He perked up for a moment, seemingly remembering something, snatched up the lunch, and handed it over, bouncing on his feet. "Your lunch, just the way you like it and made properly." A small look was sent to KrakenKid as he said this, but otherwise he appeared as civil as possible.

"Thanks Dads." Phoenix told them both. Though he did want to spend more time with them, he had been working on a certain protect for a long time, and wasn't willing to give it up now. "I've got work to do so I'll see you two later!"

"Alright, just don't stay up too late this time!" KrakenKid called after him as he rushed down the stairs, lab coat fluttering behind him like a cape.

The crab gave him a joking nudge. "You're just mad he keeps drinking all of your coffee stash."

"I'm not-... Shut up." Cannibal earned a elbow in his side, but it was well worth it.

Hey young blood, doesn't it feel

-----------------------

Phoenix quickly placed the flask under the flame and watched as it changed from light orange to a fiery red in mere seconds. He expected to see bubbles, but moments passed, and the most he got was steam and a little smoke, but not a single bubble had appeared.

Perplexed, he quickly jotted it down in his notes, glancing up to check again but it proved to be unusual. Humming to himself, Phoenix plopped himself in the nearest swivel chair and pulled it close enough to see the process closely, but still a safe distance away. It had to bubble sometime... Right?

Phoenix had been working on a particular project for ages, two months to be exact, as he was so close to finishing it. The idea: Combine a strong healing potion, a regeneration potion, and a fire resistance potion into one. Project Ironskin was his idea of a code-name, and it was coming along nicely. Phoenix just hoped it would actually work, but so far, it was showing signs of having the properties he needed. He just needed to run a few more tests before the actual moment of truth would come, and maybe, he could make something amazing.

Smiling to himself, Phoenix didn't even notice the figure approaching until they tapped his shoulder. Swiveling around, he was met with Harold. "The others and I are done for the day." Phoenix frowned, glancing at his creation again and biting his lip. The scientist hesitated but eventually gave a defeated sigh. "But, if you want to close up for us so you can finish up what you're doing, I'll give you the keys."

Phoenix clapped his hands together. "You're the best, Harold."

"Yeah, yeah." Harold sighed, fishing the keys from his pocket and handing them over. "Just don't stay up late or your Dad will kill me. Both of them."

Phoenix nodded quickly and waved as Harold and the others walked out the doors, getting several in return. Then he faced the potion being brewed. It had to bubble sometime, and it would finally be done. Probably... Hopefully... Oh dear it's made of fire resistance, what if it never does?

Groaning but staying focused, Phoenix stared at the potion. He kept his eyes wide and his attention sharp, but as time droned on, his eyelids fluttered with exhaustion, until he couldn't keep them open any longer, and drifted into a deep sleep.

———————————

KrakenKid was rudely awoken by commotion downstairs, though for what reason, he didn't know. He rubbed his eyes, yawning and shaking himself awake. It took him a couple moments of staring at the glass table and all of the papers on it to recognize what he was looking at.

He had fallen asleep while working... Again. A nasty habit, but the kraken couldn't help that he had a lot of responsibilities to handle. His mind wandered, wondering why nobody woke him up when he suddenly remembered CannibalCrab had been working with him.

Turned to his side, CannibalCrab was slumped over on the connecting table, drooling in his sleep. Giving him a slight nudge made him shoot up and look around wildly, only relaxing when he noticed it was just the kraken.

"What time is it?" He mumbled under his breath, then paused as he too, heard all the racket downstairs. Lots of talking and yelling, but what about, they didn't know.

KrakenKid have a shrug. "Wish I knew. Come on- oh! But check on Phoenix first." He told him, already half down the stairs.

CannibalCrab huffed and stretched while getting up but eventually made his way to the guest room where Phoenix slept when he was at the Conch Command.

It was empty.

KrakenKid made his way downstairs, the chatting getting louder and louder until he found the source: The entrance to the lab. There were some Illithids preventing everyone from heading in, drawing a line to make sure a growing crowd was at bay.

KrakenKid pushes his way to the front, glancing around before he finally noticed what the cause was.

An ever raging fire in the lab.

Some Illithids we're doing their best to fight it, but only seem to contain it at best. It was like nothing KrakenKid had ever seen before, the flames were so hot, they actually burned red and the glass doors of the hospital barely seemed to keep it at bay.

KrakenKid would've asked the Illithids more if he hadn't felt a tap on his shoulder. Whipping around, he met the eyes of Harold, who glanced between him and the fire.

"Was anyone in there?" KrakenKid rose a brow, now concerned.

Harold paused. "Well everyone was going to bed except-" The scientists whole body froze in place, fear now plaguing his eyes and body language. His eyes locked onto the fire, then slowly back up at KrakenKid. "Where's Phoenix?"

"Not in his bed." CannibalCrab answered upon hearing the question. He caught up to the pair before slowing down and staring at the fire for a moment, then turned to Harold. "Why?"

Harold could barely move, but eventually, spat it out. "He was supposed to clean up after us. He stayed late."

Now horror gripping their hearts, CannibalCrab and KrakenKid turned their eyes to the lab, full of flames, and nearly had a heart attack.

"PHOENIX!" They screamed in unison.

Like our time is running out?

—————————

Phoenix woke to smelling smoke. Not the pleasant smoke of cooking or candles, but more suffocating.

He coughed himself awake, then staggered backwards when he opened his eyes.

He had left the open flame unattended, and now it was spreading out of control.

Though his first thought was to run, his eyes caught the potion and hesitated. All of his hard work was sitting right there, and as fire blazed faster than he could think, he had to make a choice.

So he made a grab for it, unknowing of what would come as he did.

Though he did manage to get it, his lab coat sleeve caught fire, making him jerk back and let out a yelp. In an attempt to put it out, he stumbled backwards, and found himself bumping into a table and slipping.

As his back hit the ground, the potion slipped out of his grip and splashed on him. Shards of glass cut into his skin, but the burning red potion sinking into his skin was worse. It was like feeling himself get boiled, the liquid spilling all over him, from head to toe and making him want to scream.

I'm gonna change you, like a remix

The only thing that prevented him from doing so was the smoke entering his lungs as he did. The fire now was twice the size it was.

Phoenix tried to stand, covering his mouth with his coat and squeezing his eyes shut, but he wobbled and crashed on the ground once again, but this time, hit his head against the ground, and he blacked out.

Then I'll raise you, like a phoenix

—————————

KrakenKid and CannibalCrab had been through a lot. Near death experiences, surviving fatal wounds, horrors beyond imagination and surviving the madness of it all, they were almost unkillable, and had seen nearly everything. There wasn't a lot that could scare them.

Wearing our vintage misery

But knowing their son could be dying at that moment, and feeling so helpless to stop it?

That stopped their hearts and scattered their minds.

As soon as they had the right equipment for it, they had a team dose the fire as quickly as possible. Once they were done, they carried out Phoenix's limp body. They noticed two things right away as they were able to get close to him.

One, he was still alive, breathing but just barely, and two, his body's state. Other than a couple scratches, it looked... Fine. Burn free. He was just in the middle of a fire, but hadn't taken one burn from it.

No, I think it looked a little better on me

Doc was never so perplexed. The real concern when checking his body was his lungs that had inhaled so much smoke, but once they managed to get all of that out, he just slept.

The two fathers stayed by his side, and eventually, fell asleep there too.

Hours and hours would pass, but eventually, Phoenix's eyes would flicker open. He slowly sat up, blinking, and feeling rather energized inside. Like he had so much energy stored inside of him, and it just needed to be let out.

So that's exactly what he did. In that moment, Phoenix just let the energy go, and his hands produced a flame. While holding it, Phoenix felt the heat, but it didn't burn him. He was okay.

I'm gonna change you, like a remix

But, at that moment, CannibalCrab would wake up and scream as well, only triggering KrakenKid to do the same. Phoenix stopped the energy and the flame disappeared, which calmed down his Dads, but they still remained wary. "What," CannibalCrab breathed, eyes wild. "Was that?"

Phoenix blinked, staring at his hands before both of his Dads did another double take. "And what happened to your hair?" KrakenKid blurted out, eyes not moving from it.

Phoenix only blinked. "My hair?" He echoed. He didn't remember doing anything with his hair. Grabbing a piece, he bend it down to his eye level before noticing it was no longer orange, but now a fiery red. The Tide Changer child grinned wildly. "This is so cool! My hair changed and I have fire powers!"

Then I'll raise you, like a phoenix

Phoenix excitedly lit his hands on fire again, only getting more yelps from his Dads. "I THOUGHT I TAUGHT YOU NOT TO PLAY WITH FIRE!" KrakenKid yelled, debating what to do.

"It's fine!" Phoenix assured them. "It doesn't hurt!"

They stared for a moment before KrakenKid rushed to get Doc, screaming as he did.

Doc would check him out, but other than an unusually high body temperature that didn't seem to change him much, Phoenix was amazingly healthy, just different now.

He had changed.

And that kids, is why we don't fall asleep with an open flame still burning. This has been fire safety with Atlantis!

Have some fun facts about Phoenix!

--Phoenix's hair was not always fiery red, but rather used to be orange before the incident

--Phoenix's incident, while leaving him with fire powers and later, he would find it also gave him regeneration powers, would also leave him unable to use potions, for their effect would no longer work on him anymore, and with frequent nightmares about the event. Just to clarify, the potion he made and also the firestorm happening around him triggered the whole biological change.

--Phoenix's powers are almost identical to those of the mythical animal phoenix, which many found ironic

--No one was ever able to replicate Phoenix's potion like it worked for him again, though they did try.

--Phoenix often stays up late nights and drinks coffee to stay awake for his projects, then crashes later

I also have a couple scenes I'm thinking of drawing of these scenes

Alright, I hope you guys liked this! Be sure to comment what you think, and tell me, who should I do next of my Next Gen? Develop more characters, or show the rest, because I still need to show the other two villains and a couple siblings! See you guys later!
