May 25 My Heroes

Human beings are known for their tenacity. A person's ability to overcome adversity it's something to be praised. For me a hero is not someone who can do something because he's got the talent or the skills or the money to complete a task, but somebody who no matter the circumstances and the different obstacles he or she might face, physical, emotional or cognitive, finds a way to succeed and adapt positively to a new or difficult situation.

I have two heroes. The first one is my mother. She practically raised us four by herself because my father wasn't always there for us. She's a woman of faith, gentle, caring, and so wise, always giving us the best advice and love. She's always helping others, taking care of the elderly and those in need in the neighborhood and she gives with joy of the little that she has.

The second person I consider a hero is my son Gabriel. It was a very difficult situation when he was born. Having no vitals and no breathing at all, my 28 weeks of gestation premature newborn was born dead, but revived some minutes later. Against all odds he made it through fighting for his life because he's such a strong boy. By himself in the NICU (I was not in my best condition either), I saw him by first time 5 days after he was born. Finally, after 38 days in the hospital, I was able to take my baby home with me.

Those were hard times, but Gabriel is my angel. He makes the best out of everything and everyday he wakes up glowing a smile on his face. My boy is always in a good mood and despite his hyperactive condition he's sweet and obedient. He's 11 and it's graduating tomorrow from 6th grade with honors. Gabriel never gives up and reminds me of that there's still miracles happening when we think everything is lost.
