Long before quirks the world was a very different place. The World was split into four countries that each represented the element the inhabitants could control. These powers or the ability to bend are said to be the precursor of quirks: Water bending, Earth bending, Fire bending and Air bending. The nations lived in eras of peace and war but were guided through the ages by the Avatar.
