When I gathered up the courage to tell my Mormon parents I was more into dick than their daughter was, they didn't exactly applaud me. Nor did they find it funny. What is funny, however, is that if they hadn't kicked me out of my childhood home in Utah when I was fifteen, 1990, I wouldn't be where I am now; living alone in Chicago at eighteen, September; 1993, enjoying the fleeting summer nights.(Originally titled: Fragile Hands)It may seem short, because there's only a few chapters, but all chapters have 4,000-6,000 words. To be able to read. Sometimes it's enjoyable. Most of the time, it's less than enjoyable. Sometimes it's a curse. Ryan has always been able to read. Ever since he was little. The other kids never appreciated how weird it was for Ryan to know their names before they had ever spoken to him. His mother had often told him not to worry, that, yes - he was among the few people who could read the minds of those around them, but no - it didn't have to set him apart from other kids. The only issue was that Ryan never really enjoyed reading. It's an involuntary action. He couldn't get better or worse at it, just learn to cope, basically. People like him were so rare that Ryan had decided he should keep his little talent hidden, even when the entire class discussed how crazy it was that people like him existed. As to be expected, not enjoying involuntary mind reading is a bit of a stressor in Ryan's life. Ryan does not want to know what people think of him when they first meet him, the way their immediate thoughts are thrown away by fake greetings, and approval. He doesn't want to know what the man who sped past him on the sidewalk, his usual way to school, was thinking. Especially not about how that man was thinking about the girl walking in front of Ryan, and - God, especially not how that men felt guilty about it, he was married. All before Ryan knew his name, and he most likely never will know his name.Ryan's come to learn, the hard way, that you can only shut out so many thoughts. Considering his own thoughts are some of the first to go, this makes life a bit more difficult. Often times, he'll drift off into other people's daydreams, and it's unmistakably terrifying to realize you're not in control of what you're seeing.Ryan deals with heartbreak, trauma, and loss throughout this book. Read along to relate and sympathize with both Ryan and Brendon.…
