The call to adventure has some real bad timing - Artemio Navarro learned that the hard way. Finally worked up the courage to come out to his family (A elegant way of saying Nav shouted "I'm not a girl!" and locked themself in the bathroom for half an hour, but as far as coming outs go they're sure it wasn't the worst) and about to finish his first year at a new school. By all accounts Nav should have earned himself a break, but no. No, the universe decided it's his time - right now! Merlot Tien, meanwhile, had been born into this life. Literally - her older siblings were demigods who had been going to Camp Half-Blood since they were ten (Merlot was seven, then, and it felt like they'd gone to Narnia instead of just an hour's drive away.) Her mother taught her to read with myths and poetry. She could spell charybdis before she could spell establishment; she could make grapes grow before she could ride a bike. She was still in the single digits when she met her first god, and Merlot still distinctly remembers the look on Mr. D's face when the first thing out of her mouth was a casual "Hey, Dad!" Camp Half-Blood was supposed to be a safe place for them - for all children like them. Demigods, hunted by monsters in the outside world but protected within the camp's borders. But Nav arrives to a world whose protection is weakening. The Official Story ⸻ The Munson Murders ended on March 27th, 1986. Hawkins, Indiana had been the site of many tragedies in the early- to mid-1980s - disappearances in 1983, including a death caused by a toxic waste leak; a mysterious rot in 1984; the Starcourt Scandal in 1985 - but the Munson Murders would go down as the worst of them. Twenty year old Edward Munson used the cover of a high school Dungeons and Dragons club to kill three. He would have killed a fourth, but he was stopped at the last minute by Jason Carver and the Hawkins High School basketball team. At the time it there were rumors that the murder has been influenced by a cult. Years later most agree that that idea was a result of the satanic panic and the paranoia that had already permeated Hawkins. The official story included nothing paranormal. Edward Munson had simply been homicidal trailer trash, manipulating teens for his own means. The Truth ⸻ Max Mayfield had been saved just in time. Vecna was distracted long enough for his ritual to be stopped. For the gates to be closed. On March 27th, 1986, the Upside Down was defeated...for now. For now. Everyone else believed that 1986 was the end of Hawkins' oddities, and on the surface it was. Those who knew the truth waited...and waited...and waited. They grew up. They moved out. In a way, they almost moved on. Became normal people with normal lives and normal families. The looming anxiety would never go away, but after 39 years it's easy to almost believe. Believe that maybe they really had saved the world and the Upside Down had been fully locked away. Of course, they should have known better than believe. Once again something has come for Hawkins, and this time they won't be there to protect it.…

First question: When does a child become a weapon?Maybe it was when they were carried through the door of Hawkins National Laboratory. Brought through a psychological barrier that stripped them of their humanity. Or maybe it was before that. When drugs mutated them in the womb? When their mothers signed up for the program that would eventually give them their powers? Maybe it was even further back, beginning when the Indigo Program was only a spark in Doctor Martin Brenner's mind. Or maybe that was the wrong way to go about it: maybe there was a process. The door began it. The tattoos, the shaved heads, the powers - they all continue it. They, as alchemy turned lead to gold, transformed child to weapon. Second question: When does a weapon become a child? Ten was only twelve. Twelve long years of testing and dehumanization. Papa always seemed to like her the least. She was a replacement. A well timed copy of test subject number Nine, who had been broken years before Ten was even born. But what good is a replacement that is weaker than the original? So they pushed her harder, punished her worse, did everything to show her what she was worth: nothing. Nothing except the ways they could use her powers (One day she would be replaceable. The Botterills were an anomaly. Even among the 41 other children spontaneously born at once - what were the chances the two would be cousins? You could call it fate, if you believed in that. Neither of them do, of course. Though Jess considered it incredibly luck. If not for her aunt, she likely would have ended up in the foster care. Or even worse; in the hands of Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Yet the Hargreeves continued to find their way into their lives. In more ways than one. Ciana Hargreeves had been famous since she was thirteen. A member (a former member? That was her family, could it ever be former?) of the Umbrella Academy, it was the kind of fame that you can never escape. The kind that was baked into her childhood; baked into her very essence.
