The town of Dogwood in Cross County, North Carolina is a picturesque seaside community with a sordid past swimming in piracy. Smoking Beard, aka Edward Hollingsworth, was the terror of the colonial coast in the 1600's, and one of Dogwood's founding members, before his descent into illegal privateering and eventual decline into madness. Four hundred years later, Bertha Rodriguez, romance novelist, resides in Dogwood along with her best friend Camilla Goldstein, Dogwood's chief of police. Every year the town capitalizes on its founders' past with a week long festival in June. The Founders' Festival brings much needed tourism and a break from the monotony of living in a small town.This year will be different, a huge storm hits the coast two weeks before the festival begins and someone uses it as an opportunity for murder. With their town cut off from the rest of civilization, it falls to Bertha and Camilla to solve the murder before the weather clears and the villain is able to make an escape. Briseis of Pedasus is a princess with a dual fate. She is the daughter of an unknown goddess and a king obsessed with legacy. A legacy Briseis is unable to continue, much to her father's dismay. As the Trojan War begins, Briseis accepts a quest to kill a man in the name of a goddess who wants glory, and if Briseis succeeds, the curse upon her house will be reversed. November 24, 1971 a man hijacks a twenty-eight minute flight from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. In a matter of hours this man will be known to the world as D.B. Cooper, the only criminal to have hijacked an airplane in the United States and never get caught. Cooper jumped out of that airplane with two hundred thousand dollars but was never seen or heard from again. None of the money ever popped up in circulation so why did he hijack the plane if not to spend the cash? Who was D.B. Cooper? What drove this man to hijack a plane? How did he evade the authorities for so long that the FBI has officially closed the case for lack of evidence? This is a poem I wrote for the Rewind The Classics 2021 contest. The challenge was to chose a classic and retell it with a twist. I chose the Iliad, specifically the relationship between Achilles and Briseis within it. I wrote the poem in the format of a tanka. A tanka is a poem in which each line has a certain number of syllables, the sequence is 5, 7, 5, 7, 7. The poem had to be 300 words so the sequence repeats until the very last word of this poem.
