Chapter One: Joshua's Deployment

Joshua William Dun was born June 18, 1988 to Laura and Bill Dun. He had three siblings: Ashley, who was two years younger than him, Jordan who was six years younger, and Abigail who was eight years younger than him. The Duns were very close, rarely having arguments.

They were all at Laura and Bill's home, the house Josh grew up in. It was the day Joshua was being deployed to Afghanistan, being in the U.S. military.

Everyone was crying, all hugging on Josh tightly before he was forced to go.

Joshua had never been incredibly remarkable in school, but he did have great athleticism and a passion for music. Particularly the drums.

He loved the drums so much that he wanted to play them professionally. So, he moved from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio to Los Angeles.

However, after six months of living there, money was running low. He had to move back to Columbus, and his parents offered to allow him to live in there home until he found a stable job, but he 'didn't want to be a burden.'

He was searching for a job for another month, but absolutely no place was hiring. His parents also offered to pay for him to attend college to get an education so he had more of an opportunity with varying companies, but he knew Ashley wanted to go into the medical field, meaning med school, which was incredibly expensive, and he didn't want to take that opportunity away from her by attending school.

So, he enlisted in the army.

He went through training and was top of his class, everyone being highly impressed with his athleticism. He was told he would be called as soon as he was needed.

One month later, he was called. He would be deployed to Afghanistan in six weeks.

And now, those six weeks were up.

"Bye, guys," he sniffled, the entire family taking part in one big group hug.

"B-bye, Josh," Ashley said, kissing his cheek goodbye.

"Bye, big bro," Jordan sighed, hugging his brother tightly.

"B-bye, J-Joshie," 11-year-old Abigail sniffled.

"Bye, honey," Momma Dun said sadly, kissing his forehead and hugging him tightly. "Be safe."

"Bye, Joshua," Bill said, hugging his son tightly. It was obvious he was trying to stay strong for the family, but his eyes were glossed over with tears.

"We love you," they all said in unison.

"I love you guys too," Josh said, waving goodbye. "I'll write you guys letters as soon as I can, ok? I'll see you soon. I love you all."

And with that, Joshua was gone, his leg bouncing anxiously as he sat in the back of the car, his fingers threading through his light-blue hair that he knew would soon be shaved off.

Josh had very bad anxiety. He always had.

But, he learned how to mask it as pure inexpressiveness when he was around people he didn't trust.

Which was everyone outside of his family and three or four closest friends.

He arrived at the base and was immediately sent to have his hair cut off, sighing shakily as his hand ran over the nothingness that remained.

But this was his new reality.

He had to get used to it.
