.26. ᴅᴀᴛɪɴɢᴀsᴀɴᴀ
Dating an idol, Jungkook discovered, was both surprisingly easy and extremely tricky for reasons listed below. First of all, there were rules to abide by that Taehyung didn't have to enunciate for Jungkook to figure them out.
Rule 1: avoid crowded places. An impossible task because Seoul was a busy city 24/7 and no matter where you went, you would never find yourself alone, which made the South Korean capital safe for locals but a real challenge for anyone in need of some quiet time.
However, Jungkook also discovered that people didn't expect to run into idols outside of their superstar settings, wearing regular clothes and no makeup. Taehyung didn't look any different to him but to everyone else anticipating razzle-dazzle, a hoodie, jeans and a baseball cap on South Korea's jazziest number must have been unfathomable.
Which would explain why they successfully broke rule 1 on their first official date by spending a whole day at Lotte World without being stalked. Taehyung had insisted his time off would be allocated to standing in line with Jungkook resting his head on his shoulder as they waited for their turn to board the rides. Jungkook had found no objection and even felt a little guilty for enjoying watching Taehyung's genuine fright as they free-fell over 70 metres at too high a speed for the heart not to jump in one's throat.
Rule 2: avoid weekends, when the size of crowds anywhere simply tripled just because 2/3rd of residents were off from work. Between Taehyung's wacky schedule and Jungkook's free time, this directive was easily observed.
Rule 3: no PDA. This was no doubt the most problematic injunction for the boys who could barely keep their hands off each other, too addicted to those butterflies blossoming within at every single touch. Yet both were acutely aware of the fact that no matter how inconspicuous Taehyung looked, there were people who were literally paid to track down celebrities in mundane settings and capture them on celluloid at their most vulnerable.
The other challenge was to find a way around Taehyung's schedule which was getting busier as the artist was recording songs for his upcoming album. That's how Jungkook discovered that those working in the entertainment industry lived on a different timetable altogether. No one started before noon and nobody took off until well into the night.
Jungkook, an early riser, would have loved to spend his mornings hiking in the mountains with Tae but the thought of him having to forego sleep didn't sit well with him. Taehyung, however, had instantly embraced the prospect of what sounded like some alone time with Jungkook. "I'm sure Tannie and Fifi can behave for a few hours."
And so it was decided their second date would take place somewhere between heaven and earth.
Seoul's heights proved a good idea for the trekker demographics consisted mainly of middle to old age citizens who only saw in Taehyung a handsome lad with a long stride and shortage of breath. "Don't climb with your legs but with your core," Jungkook had advised. And huh? What the hell did that even mean?
Taehyung was too exerted to ask for clarification but soon found out he didn't need to voice his thoughts around Jungkook, his ever so perceptive boyfriend. The man had placed his fingers on his lower abdomen, and had leaned into his ear. "Pretend there's a rope attached right here and it's pulling you upward."
Such a simple trick. Such miraculous results.
They soon attained one of Inwangsan's summits. Jungkook made sure no one was around before guiding Taehyung away from the trail, into the undergrowth. Dried up pine needles crunched under their boots until they reached the wall of the ancient fortifications which had guarded the city long before anyone called it Seoul.
"I hadn't even noticed it was there," Taehyung admitted, sitting on the cold stone.
"You'd have to stop looking at your feet to see it," Jungkook jested.
"I'm not as skilled a climber as you are," the other answered back.
Jungkook chuckled before grabbing Taehyung's hand. "Come here, you."
The singer took note of their present isolation. Pulling his mask down, he dived for a kiss which Jungkook had obviously been waiting to share for a while.
That's when Taehyung decided this was the closest he'd ever been to touching the sky. Kissing Jungkook had made his heart grow wings too big for his chest. Fly is all they wanted to do and if Jungkook had not been holding him down, Taehyung was convinced he would have floated away above the clouds.
They stayed there awhile, snuggled up against each other, until they had their fill of sunshine and quiet. Or maybe their tummies reminded them of their need for food and lucky for Tae, Jungkook just happened to know where to get the best potato croquettes in the neighbourhood.
"I miss our private yoga classes," Taehyung suddenly said, mouth half full.
"Didn't Namjoon hyung find you another instructor?"
Fake horror flooded Taehyung's eyes. "I never asked for another instructor!"
"So, how do you cope with the stress?" Jungkook remembered this had been the reason that had brought the man to him.
"Believe it or not, now that I've debuted, I don't feel as nervous as I used to. Maybe it had to do with the pressure they put on trainees."
Jungkook smiled, relieved. "I'm glad to hear that."
"It's a different pressure now. I must start being profitable."
Of course. Record companies weren't charities. They invested in their trainees with the hope of covering their costs once they debuted. If not, they could still count on reimbursements since artists all signed contracts to this effect.
Jungkook had a hard time accepting the fact that Taehyung barely made any money yet. "Don't you find these contracts a little unfair?"
"I'm sure they're written to benefit the company, but they're standard in the industry. You can either sign or give up on a singing career altogether."
Jungkook felt helpless. There really wasn't much he could do except perhaps— "Would you like to start yoga again?" he offered.
The smile on Taehyung's face warmed his heart like the sun. "I would love that!"
"I haven't talked to Hoseok hyung in a while. I hope his studio is still available in the mornings," Jungkook added, fumbling with his phone in an attempt to ignore the glint in his boyfriend's gaze which hinted at the possibility of them not actually practicing any asanas during their yoga sessions.
After sending Hoseok a message, Jungkook noted it was still early in the day. One look confirmed neither felt like parting so soon. So when the sign of a coin noraebang caught their eye, they were quick to enter. After a few songs and plenty of laughs, Jungkook decided this had been his favourite date so far.
Until they went on a third one.
Taehyung had only texted him an address and instructions to give his name at the front desk and he would be shown the way. Jungkook's excitement reached new heights when he realized where he was.
A recording studio.
The man had not made a secret of the fact that he would have loved to witness the magic Tae created behind muffled doors with his voice and a mic. And Taehyung had obliged him.
After mustering all the self-control at his disposal to avoid jumping up and down like a child going trick-or-treating, he followed the receptionist's directions and headed toward the elevators. The third-floor lobby was small enough for him to locate the mixing room where he was greeted by a friendly-looking sound engineer who introduced himself as Seo Joon. "You must be Jungkook. Taehyung told me to expect your visit."
"I am. Where is he by the way?"
"He's in the booth, rehearsing," he replied, pointing toward a soundproof door with a little window in it.
Jungkook didn't want to interrupt and refrained from making his presence known. Something which proved very hard to do when the first few chords of a familiar tune echoed in the room.
Sweet night.
Once again, Jungkook had to remind himself not to behave like the love-struck fanboy he was and avoid any sort of squealing in public. The thought of the track Taehyung had gifted him making it in an actual album was enough to make him swoon. He must have hummed unconsciously because after the third take, Seo Joon looked at him with a pointed smile. "So, how do you know the guy?"
"He took some classes with me, predebut." Jungkook had absolutely no idea what Taehyung had disclosed regarding their relationship, or whether he had said anything at all. They hadn't yet made time to address the issue of how private they would remain — or how public they would go, which was really unfortunate for Jungkook was now experiencing firsthand the urgency of agreeing on a single narrative that would justify his presence by Taehyung's side.
"Singing classes?"
No, I'm actually a yoga instructor seemed like such a random, out-of-place thing to say that Jungkook opted for a quiet nod, crossing his fingers in hopes that the white lie would stay harmless. Besides, Seo Joon could be working for Big Hit and Jungkook was willing to bet 1L of banana milk that his name — if not his profession — were high up on the company's blacklist.
"So, you know the song?"
Who was this guy? An engineer or a detective? Jungkook figured being truthful was the safest way to avoid getting caught in partial fibs. "I do."
"Could you record the backups?"
Jungkook doesn't remember answering the question before the man opened the door to the isolation booth, and practically shoved him in. "Put this headset on and do your thing."
Taehyung had been just as shocked to see him standing there, dazedly close to him because this rather tight space barely provided breathing room.
"Hey," Jungkook whispered, utterly sorry.
"Hey," Taehyung replied, still confused.
Seo Joon's muffled voice suddenly filled their ears. "From the top. Jungkook, sing just like you did."
And all the man could do was sign OK as he focused on the mic in front of him, trying very hard not to get distracted by the awestruck sparkles in Taehyung's smitten stare.
