the hardest and most tragic lesson to learn in this life is one too terrible:

it's easy to put villains into the places of people we used to love. sometimes they were the antagonists of your story. that does not rob them of their humanity, but their capacity to hurt does not negate the horror they commit.
monsters are human. they always have been, always will be.
