2 》Virtue

The boy in glasses standing by the gate. His hair is a stylish, solid black colour and his general demeanour is quite mysterious. We are still a distance away from him, so he can't see us. Tsubaki looks over at me and cheekily winks, Watari doesn't see this, he is in a bliss of happiness. Holding my hand alone seems to have made him oblivious to everything. As we near the boy, he glances up and a slight look of astonishment crosses his face. Our eyes are connect for what feels like an eternity but is only a few seconds in real life. His eyes have no colour within them, but I can almost see them glimmer under the afternoon sun. Embarrassed, I look away quickly and he does too. I can tell he is jealous of me and Watari, but I decide to go with it.

After all, this is my lie.

Meeting up with him now, Tsubaki introduces me.
"This is Kaori Miyazono, she's in my class and has actually had a thing for Watari for a while now."
"It's very nice to meet you!" I try to look as cute as I can and wave my hand up in greeting.
"So, Kaori, I'm sure you already know but Watari is the captain of the school soccer team, he may like it if you to came along to watch his training every once and a while," Tsubaki continues, she has to make it sound believable. Watari's face lights up in sheer joy, it's a shame I may have to disappoint him. Meanwhile, I notice Koesei becoming uncomfortable so I ask,
"Who is this guy? I'm pretty sure we have never seen you before."
"Oh!" Tsubaki realises. "This is Kousei, but you can just call him Friend A", she slaps him on the back as she says this. They appear to be very close friends. I really hope this works out.

Arima Koesei has been a big part of my life ever since I could remember. As a little girl, I obsessively looked up to him. To me, he was the best pianist in the world, he was all I thought about. At his performances, I would sit in the middle of the auditorium, so I would have the best view. When he walked on stage, before he even started playing, I was on the edge of my seat. Then, when his delicate but hard worked fingers hit the first note, I was totally entranced by his magnificent melodies. They were rigid, but to me they were colourful music notes that floated around the stage, every one perfectly executed. It was Kousei that made me want to play an instrument of my own. It was him who motivated me, encouraged me and inspired me in my dreams to create music. To make my symphonies come alive. Without him, I would not be who I am.

Without Kousei Arima, I would not be telling this lie.

As we wander down the streets of our town, passing flourishing gardens, cute houses, happy people and smiling children, I begin to treasure my life. I am surrounded by such amazing people and the guy I have had a major crush on is basically right next to me, though he is slowly sulking next to Tsubaki. I almost feel sorry for him, but this is the way is has to happen.
"Where exactly are we going?" I hear Kousei ask Tsubaki, he's annoyed.
"We are heading to this new cafe, Kaori has been telling me that she's been dying to go there ever since it opened", this is true, I absolutely love food. We arrive soon enough and sit at a vintage looking table at the back. I'm next to Watari, with a Tsubaki on my other side.

"This is so adorable!" I exclaim. The others nod in agreement, however Kousei seems reluctant to. Maybe he's not used to this sort of thing. We order and while waiting, I observe our surroundings.. The place is already very popular and the smell of freshly baked muffins, cakes and biscuits wafts in the air. I look to my left and see a piano in the corner.
"Hey there's a cute little piano over there!" I point to show Tsubaki.
"Aw, the little kids seem to love it", she says. Mozart's Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, fills the room, a sweet innocent tune. I hum along with it. Our food arrives and I'm full to the brim with delight. I tuck in immediately and the waffle literally melts in my mouth. I catch a glimpse of Kousei, he's looking at me as if I'm crazy. He picks at his food, not intending to eat it.

I try to change the mood.
"You play piano right, Kousei? Why don't you teach those kids some more of the song?" Tsubaki catches on and encourages my idea,
"Yeah come on, I haven't heard you play for so long! You were much cooler when you played". She seems almost sad. I've had it, I forcefully drag Koesei over to the piano, he is so surprised, he doesn't even have time to protest. The two little girls look at him with their big, puppy like eyes. I turn to him.
"If you don't play, these girls and I will make you pay", I give him the devil look.
"Okay, okay just one song, that's all," he eventually gives in.
"Hey, start playing and I'll join in", he nudges to the girls. They start their lightweight tune and soon enough, Koesei's fingers are on the piano, forming a melody with the other two. It is so lively and so REAL, I am entranced. The cafe's chattering stops and all eyes are on the piano, in awe of the music.

Suddenly, out of nowhere Koesei stops, and stares at his fingers in fear. In shock, I realise that he is shaking.
"I... I really have to go", is all he mutters, he hastily grabs his school bag off the back of the chair and hurried out, he seems really upset.
"Hey Kousei, what's up man? You don't have to leave", to be honest, I had forgotten about Watari.

What went wrong? I watch his ghostly figure run down the street and wonder. I know he stopped playing piano because his mum was becoming too much, and his brother also would have influenced it, but surely, he must still have some of his love for music that he had when I first laid my eyes on him.
