[23.1] THE QUEEN

HYBRID:

A Fang born of two different races. Contrary to the old belief, matings of two fang bloodlines rarely create a hybrid. Most times, one gene is recessive. However, in the rare instances that Hybrids are created, they are extremely powerful, especially if one or both of the bloodlines are pure.

[SYRIA CANTOR VERIDIAN]

DESERTED. NO one in sight. No scent either—not that I could smell him if he didn't want to be seen.

Meow.

Rune brushed up against my dress, purring softly.

"I know, I know my darling," I sighed, my eyes trailing around the place," it's never deserted because he never leaves," I paused, my jaw ticking momentarily, picking up the cat.

"So bloody hell, where is he?"

Pursing my lips I walked forward, the trail of my midnight dress dragging after me, stroking Rune's fur. I walked toward the kitchen island.

Stepping up the platform, my eyes trailed the thousand-pieced puzzle that lay done- no, almost done except for the singular piece missing right near the top corner.

I studied it for a bit, eyes trailing over the picture.

It was a house on the outskirts of nothing, nothing but a quiet sea. A single man standing right out. His dark hair blew in the wild wind.

He looked lonely and yet, My head tilted to the side eyes narrowing on it. It was like he didn't mind the solace of loneliness. Peaceful perhaps, but in a rather sad way.

Rune pulled in my grip and I glanced down at him.

"Yes. I know." I grunted.

It was just like him to be attracted to this these things.

My gaze traveled the counter and stopped at the singular puzzle piece that sat a little ways away from it. I reached out for it.

"Mother."

My gaze flashed forward, eyes meeting that of a deep blank ocean gaze. Even bluer than the dupe in the picture.

I let out a startled breath. "Roman!" my eyebrows contorted, pursing my lips, "you know I loathe when you do that."

He didn't say a word. His silver-dipped gaze never left mine.

I pursed my lips, my undead heart clenching within me. He couldn't even smile at his mother. No familiar emotion tracing those cold pretty eyes.

"Then again, you are the only one who can. Perhaps that is why I can't stand it. It's just so unusual for me." I managed a grin, offering him a smile.

Though he remained silent I couldn't help but stare. My tribrid son was the only being in the world who could sneak up on a pure-blood Vampire undetected. His powers were swift and more efficient than any, more efficient than I, could ever be.

My pride and joy.

He remained in his silence, though kept his deep gaze set on me as I stepped down from the platform. I placed Rune on the floor, and she scampered away, launching into one of the exquisite couches I had ordered for my son last month.

I approached him, still with my warm gaze.

"Why are you here mother?" he asked tilting his head slightly, and yet again there was no life in his voice.

My smile faltered for a bit. "Does it bother you to see your mother?"

"I saw you just this morning," he replied, stale gaze set in mine.

My smile returned, an echo of warmth in my cold heart.

"Indeed, I was certainly surprised to see you at breakfast today. " I stated, eyes searching his, "A pleasant surprise it was. I just admit you made me so happy that you decided to join us."

His gaze dropped for a moment as if thinking, "is there a reason you're here mother?"

I wished to ask why he did when I had been asking for months that he should eat with us. However, I did not wish to chase him away, and simply would careless of whatever made him come out of his room this once. I just hoped he would do it again.

"I just wanted to see if you're alright. I hadn't seen you in weeks before the ball. You had locked yourself in here as usual."

"Only because you and father will not let me go to the lost world."

I shut my eyes at this, pursing my lips. Not this. My gaze snapped open, tone harsher than intended.

"Your place is here, Roman. As the new king of the new world. How long should I repeat this? You're a symbol that needs to stay in the capital at Fang Court."

"Because my blood holds three?" he started, unmoved by the tone in my voice. Sometimes I thought he was simply unaware of emotion.

"You're royalty on all three sides. Your father and I brought two species together. An abnormality in its time. As much as we've built, there are things we couldn't unite. The witches went into hiding afraid. Some even moved across new worlds to different territories. Other houses have formed other states. But Your ascension will unite the supernatural order and bring the new world into one world order. You have the power to not only rule a kingdom, but an entire empire, a whole world."

"We have a war on our necks. The damned are multiplying. And Lorana grows stronger every day with each fang created. She wants me, I should be on the battlefield."

"Lorana can wait," I growled.

His gaze shifted to mine, emotionless, "You fear Lorana will end me."

I froze at this.

He simply blinked, staring lifelessly at me.

"She..." I breathed, "she is indeed the enemy. And I.." I trailed off shutting my eyes, "I know that you are strong, but-"

"You think she's stronger."

My gaze flashed to him.

"I think the world of my son. Your intellect, strength, and power are stronger than anything this has ever seen, even stronger than Lorana ever was. I have no doubt whatsoever that you can defeat her in battle."

He watched me as I kept on speaking.

"But war can wait. The damned are multiplying and to defeat the, first, you need to unite the three royal bloodlines, and the world order will fall into place. You will have the largest military power in the new world, large enough to wipe the damned once and for all and reclaim the lost world."

I took a step closer to him. "But to do that the free states of the new world must see your ascension, know that you want to claim your stake to the throne. I have no doubt they will follow, many have agreed to kneel beneath you. You are a living god after all. But they must see your claim and by your side, your Sworn."

His eyes held mine and I got lost in his sea. There was something eerily beautiful about him I always marveled at. Fang are a beautiful race, but he- he was otherworldly.

His hair was deep like darkness, not even his father had that shade, and his eyes a mirror of stars, I feel he put most of them to shame, and his face the template of a god.

Everything I ever wanted and more than I could ever imagine.

My hand reached out to caress his face. My fingers were a breath away from tracing his jawline, when he looked away, walking past me.

I was left hanging, my hand slowly falling as I turned to watch him leave-

"Then they will not be waiting for long," he muttered, walking toward his puzzle piece where he grabbed the extra piece and lifted the trail of the puzzle, disappearing in an instant.

I let out a sigh, knowing he was somewhere in his bedroom. His scent light from that area. Normal fang wouldn't be able to sense him and in most cases, it was difficult for me.

But I had years to master whilst I raised him, and it had paid off.

He appeared again this time a little behind me, his shoes taken off, walking on bare ground as he wandered around his living room. I watched him for a moment as he searched for something on the shelves, disappearing and appearing in instances. Too fast for even I to catch sometimes.

A small grin grew against my lips as I sat on the arm of the chair watching as he seemed to find what he was looking for.

An empty case.

"It used to frustrate me when you did that." I began, "When you were little." I grinned, "I couldn't catch you even though I am quite literally the fastest vampire alive."

"I remember," he mumbled, taking a tube from somewhere I could not see, and placing it in the case.

"What is that?"

"Nothing," he growled back, disappearing.

I let out a tired breath, glancing at Rune who stared back at me with her yellow eyes.

He appeared again, this time by the bar.

"But I'm serious Roman, about spending time with your sworn." I sighed, stroking Rune's fur, "The announcement at the ball isn't enough. You'll have to sell it." I explained, turning slightly to face him.

I watched as he took out a glass.

"And that is why you are here. Father sent you." He accused.

"I'm here because I miss you. You know I do." I stated plainly, I watched him unable to completely neutralize the desperation in my tone. "Why can't you miss back like a-"

"Normal son?" he finished, seemingly watching the wine slush in the glass.

For the life of me, I could never tell what was going on in that mind.

"That is not what I-"

"I'm a tribrid of all royal blood. I'm not even sure I have a soul," his stale gaze snapped to mine holding me prisoner, "I'll never be normal."

I took this in, jaw clenching. "I know what you are. But no- your father did not send me here. I came because I miss you as I started earlier. However, your father is concerned as much as I am about your portrayal of your mating."

"I think I performed well." he started, gaze dropping to his glass.

"You switched your royal attire with Graydon! I would have had him beheaded for wearing his king's attire if I had no soft spot for his mother-" I growled.

"You would have done no such thing." he calmly countered, my jaw dropping.

After saying that he downed the glass, his blue eyes shifting to sky grey, teal, and then back to blue, as he let it settle.

His gaze snapped to mine, "Graydon is my select."

"So....you've already chosen?" I raised an eyebrow.

"There is no choosing." he huffed, taking out the chessboard beneath the game. He set the pieces, moving them one by one, "Your select has no training in the lost world. Lord Heil of the Tribe has no wisdom, simply A mindless war machine. " he grunted, eyes shifting between the pieces once more.

"I can not lead an empire with a zombie and a minion."

I nodded. "As I thought."

"Then you have your answer."

"Not with your Sworn," I replied walking toward the island, " Roman, you need to play that part. Do you not see Hunter with his mate? His eyes never leave hers and he is but only in the bare infancy of the bond."

"It is certainly a pity," he replied, without further thought, gaze trailing between the pawns.

I grabbed his jaw pulling it up to me, so those stars for eyes captured mine again.

"You might not have a soul, but you can not act like it. You need to learn how to feel Roman." I gritted.

His gaze hardened, eyes turning gray for a moment and my hold loosened, dropping my hand until his orbs returned to their blues.

He looked down at his game without further thought.

I shook my head, staring at him as his hair slowly moved in the nonexistent breeze.

"I saw you dancing the night of the ball."

His gaze trailed up to meet mine.

"What? I'm your mother. Do you think I didn't know it was Graydon the moment he showed up? Even your magic couldn't hide his true scent from me."

His gaze dropped back to the pieces as if he could not care less.

"I saw you with that vampire? Dancing..." I trailed off, "You never dance. Who was she? Her bloodline smelled peculiar."

"I did not care to know. I only danced to blend," he replied. His gaze retreated down to the chess board.

I watched him for a moment. I tried not to sound desperate but I couldn't help it. "Will you join your father and me for dinner tonight?"

He didn't look up.

"It would make me happy if you did," I whispered the last part.

He stepped away from his game, staring at it for a moment before his eyes snapped back up to mine.

"I can not."

With that, he disappeared, leaving me alone again.

The sound of a door slamming was a clear signal he wasn't coming back. He had done enough chatting for one day.

Sighing, I moved toward Rune picking her up. My gaze trailed around his quarters.

"You will need to play the part with your sworn," I spoke calmly, knowing he could hear me.

"Time spent with her will be arranged. You must look like the mated power couple you soon will be."

When all but silence echoed back I let out a breath, walking toward the door. Before opening it I took one last look at the place.

"Rest well, dearest," I whispered into the silence.

With that. I walked out the door.
