Nintendo Switch Review.
Hello everyone, I've been meaning to get to this for a while and it's finally here! Today I'll be reviewing the Nintendo Switch.
To start off let's address the main complaint, battery life. Honestly 2-3 hours of Zelda on the go is great. Unless you're playing it non-stop then you'll probably run into at least a few chances to charge the Switch. Planes now have outlets built into them, I would know since on my flight to Florida we had outlets. If you're in the car then that's not a problem either. The AC adapter is very long so if you only have a regular outlet in the front of the car it can still be played in the back.
Now I don't know about you guys but my cars has a regular outlet along with the car charger, and it isn't a new car by any standards. And what if you're camping and you need to play on the Switch? Why are you camping again?
I doubt you'll be playing the Switch your entire excursion. So plan ahead. It's like charging your phone. Only instead of getting to play Angry Birds, it's Zelda.
Now for another complaint I see a lot, portability. Guys its really not that hard to carry around. Most pants have two pockets, put the two JoyCons in one and the tablet in the other. This method works with my shorts for crying out loud. But what if you have no pockets for some reason. Buy a case, you'd do it for your 3DS wouldn't you?
Now let's have a lightning round of complaints, shall we?
I can't charge and play on tabletop. I don't even like tabletop, also there's an accessory for that.
There's only one Dock. Individual Docks are being sold.
My Joycons die too quickly. Really? Just attach them to the Switch when you're done playing. And I doubt you'll be playing on the TV nonstop for 20 hours strait. Speaking of which, short discussion. The JoyCons have 20 hours of battery life despite all their incredible features like HD rumble and other great mechanics.
Seriously HD rumble is amazing. You can guess how many imaginary balls are in an imaginary box just by moving it around. So that's why JoyCons are each $50. They're each their own controller. And if you buy them together they're knocked down to $80 for two.
Now for the next topic. The Switch has a 720P screen, which means it is the first portable HD gaming system. (Probably.) Zelda and ARMS look absolutely amazing both on the TV and the Switch itself. They run very smoothly and I only had frame-rate issues on Zelda when a lot was happening.
The fact that this system can run such huge games is stunning. I love playing Zelda on the go or handing a JoyCon to my friends and playing a match of ARMS. The kickstand is pretty reliable despite the fact that my brother literally broke it off at one point. It was easy to snap back in and it still works fine.
Now for the JoyCons themselves. A lot of people complain about the control scheme. But honestly it works. There's lots of buttons for plenty of options when you're on single player, and a balanced amount for when you're doing multiplayer. The JoyCons are as close as we can get to being perfect at what they're trying to do.
They easily snap into place and are quick to remove. They feel very comfortable in the hand both when playing sideways and regularly. The sideways JoyCon is surprisingly easy to use despite it looking like it's very limited. I was able to continually defeat even people online in ARMS with just one JoyCon.
When they're locked into the plastic controller they feel like a regular streamlined controller. The control scheme is very similar to the WiiU Gamepad when playing with them attached to the Switch. Sure it was a bit awkward at first but I adapted to it like any controller and I'm now great at using them.
Now for Online. To say the least it's great. You have no limit to how many connections you can have (Cough Cough. 3DS. Cough Cough.) So if you're in Starbucks and are itching for a round of ARMS its easy to just connect and play. I only ran into connection issues when my friend accidentally hit the sync button on the JoyCon, then I gave him the strap and he no longer hit it.
The connection is great for a free version that isn't even as strong as the real deal. Which isn't launching until 2018 so you can enjoy all your games online without paying a cent. But wait, how much will online cost for tons of features like Voice Chat and others. $20! For the year!? Xbox Live costs $60! Wow Nintendo. Still keeping it affordable for the family.
Now no the online isn't perfect for now at least. Seriously, you need to download an app for voice chat and that's only for your friends. But hopefully the paid online will fix all of that.
In all the Switch is a very good console with a great library of games. It works incredibly for what it's trying to be and definitely brings Nintendo back into the game.
