Nintendo and their studios.
So recently I was thinking about the various third parties in super smash bros ultimate and it got me thinking about Nintendo and all their third and second party developers.
So today we're going to talk about Nintendo's friendly third parties and studios.
Let's start with some people who make third party exclusives. Square Enix and Ubisoft have both made exclusive games for the switch. Now the interesting thing about these exclusives is there's different rules for each one and if they could go multi platform one day.
Ubisoft made 2 notable exclusives for the Wii U, Rayman Legends and Zombie U. Both of which ended up going multi platform. This is because Nintendo had no agreement that they had to remain on the Wii U and they didn't use Nintendo IPs.
However Mario + Rabbids will forever be on only Nintendo systems because of the usage of Mario. Legally Ubisoft can't port the game without Nintendo's permission and something tells me they'll say no.
Square made Octopath Traveler. Another exclusive this time with no Nintendo IPs, meaning like Rayman legends they can do whatever the hell they want with the game.
Platinum Games are the developers of the Bayonetta series. Which has recently become a third party Nintendo exclusive series. This started with Bayonetta 2 being published by Nintendo. Basically they had Platinum make the game and paid for it in exchange for insured exclusivity. This is likely the case for Bayonetta 3 as well.
Now Game Freak is an interesting one. They actually aren't owned by Nintendo in any way and can do whatever they damn please, unless it's Pokémon. See Nintendo owns one third of Pokémon and they use that third to insure a Pokémon game never leaves the Nintendo ecosystem. They also make sure there's always a Pokémon game in production.
Game Freak can make other games but they aren't that big of a studio so usually other endeavors are few and far between. Sometimes like with Town they just throw it on the newest Nintendo system because they work so closely with the hardware. Pokémon is Nintendo exclusive but game freak isn't.
Now for Monolith Soft and Hal. Monolith are the developers of the Xenoblade games and recently have worked very closely with Nintendo on tons of their first party games.
Monolith was bought out in 2007 and now makes only Nintendo games. As long as Nintendo owns Monolith Xenoblade chronicles and whatever else monolith decides to make will Be Nintendo exclusives.
HAL went bankrupt in the 90s so that's why they only make Nintendo games. They're essentially unofficially owned by Nintendo. Nintendo keeps the studio alive and they make Kirby games and other franchises for Nintendo only.
Finally we get to smash bros. Smash is being developed by Namco and Sora LTD. Does this make smash a third party game? Not by a long shot. Nintendo owns the smash bros series and trademarks. They simply have a deal with these studios to make the game. They could have EA make the next smash if the two worked out a deal.
Finally I want to talk about In House development. Nintendo has a lot of development teams in their main company and because of this they save a lot of money. If you have another studio make a game you have to give them a cut of the profits. So making s game in house like Nintendo does with s lot of their games is very smart.
So with all that out of the way now we can better understand Nintendo's other studios. That's all for this shorter chapter, I want to hopefully get my big one out later in the month. Thanks everyone for reading and I hope you look forward to my next chapter. Adios!
