My Top 7 Nintendo Switch Games of 2017.
Oh boy it's hard to believe 2017 is already almost over. When I first got my Switch back in July I played exclusively Zelda for a month until Splatoon 2 released unless I had a friend over, then I popped in ARMs and we played that.
Now to close out this year I'll be doing my top 7 games of 2017. The only game I haven't fairly played that I own is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle which I just got yesterday so I can't place it on the list since that wouldn't be fair to the game. Now without further adieu, let's begin!
#7 Mighty Gunvolt Burst!
Now like many, I was put off by the fact that this game featured Beck from Mighty No. 9, but if you give it a fair play through it's an amazing game. The game also featured the Azure Striker series and combined the two worlds. Now I've never played the Azure Striker games but the game does a good job conveying the basics of that world and its lore.
The game has a beautiful 2D pixel design and is the Megaman successor Mighty No. 9 could only dream of being. The level design is fun and the bosses are a blast to fight and offer up a nice challenge.
The only problems are that the game really is Megaman 10.5 (Because 11 is a thing now.) but not even. The gun editing ability feels like a shoehorned way to have the abilities that damage bosses from beating a previous boss like Megaman and it's also a short as Megaman. It even steals the boss rush for the final level.
I also think it was a tad overpriced, it is $10 but really should've been $5-$7 because of how short it is. To add on top of that it shoehorned in DLC characters as well to get even more money from you! The story feels rushed and tacked on, at least some of the later Megaman games actually tried with story.
But the thing that made it all worth it was the final boss. I won't spoil it but the final boss alone is worth playing the game because he is the most amazing and hilarious thing that will ever grace this world.
Unfortunately this game just can't compare to the other games on this list, it was OK but not good enough.
#6 Sonic Mania.
(Yeah I know this isn't an exclusive but it was on the Switch so it counts!_
Sonic Mania, what more is there to say other than this game is astounding. The graphics are beautiful, the stages are well designed, and the music is one of the greatest things of all time.
Everything to be said about this game has already been said by countless other people who have reviewed the game so there's really no reason for me to repeat the same thing you've heard over and over. This game is only $20 and is well worth the price, I cannot encourage you enough to buy this game.
I even think it's better than the original Sonic games, they were good don't get me wrong but this game. This game was something truly special and brought Sonic back to his former glory, that is until Forces fucked it all up and ruined Sonic again.
#5 ARMS.
Ooh low blow for a game that was just announced to no longer be receiving new content. ARMS is an underwhelming game. While its core formula is a very good one and the first month sales were very good it has become the black sheep of Nintendo IPs.
The game released with substantially less content than a $60 AAA game should've. And while I believe the onslaught of content that soon followed brought the value up some, it wasn't enough. 3.8 new characters, a new mode, a ripoff Splatfest, and an achievement system wasn't enough to save this game.
I think it could've done substantially better if 1. Nintendo had given it another year or maybe even 2 of development to fully flesh it out. Or 2. If they had priced it at $40. Because that's what this game is, a $40 game.
I know the original Splatoon had the same problem content wise but the updates in just half a year gave it so much new content that when compared to ARMS makes it look like they barely updated ARMS at all.
The problem with ARMS is the fighting game hasn't been as over-saturated as the shooter. That was Splatoon's biggest selling point. It was innovating a stale genre in such a unique and creative way. Not only that but it was the first new IP in 14 years and it was a good game on the Wii U!
Splatoon established a massive fanbase that followed it to the sequel, and the massive fanbase thus attracted more people making the sequel a massive success. ARMS had none of this going for it, if they make an ARMS 2 which I do think they should, they need a lot of new character, stages, and modes to stand a chance. Or else we may have a truly failure of a Nintendo Switch IP.
Well this just became ARMS with a Side of Salt, moving on!
#4 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Now I just got this game yesterday so how on Earth can I fairly judge it? Well for one I've had nothing to do for the past two days so I've been playing it like there's no tomorrow and two I unlocked Gold Mario so I've earned my stance.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a beautiful game that is everything that was great about the Wii U version and more on the go. So why is it #4 on the list?
Well first off let's start with all the good, shall we? They added some great new characters which I can appreciate because it means we're one step closer to Mario Kart 9 having Olimar and Pikachu. (Also Nintendo Kart won't be a thing because of Mario Kart is a brand and sells by the name alone at this point.)
I also like that they overhauled the battle mode and gave it some really fun other modes that will eat hours of my life, and that they included all the DLC in the package. Now back in the day when I had Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U I was too stingy to buy the DLC so this was basically 9 brand new stages and 7 awesome returning ones!
Bo-bomb battle is amazing just because I can make it rain bomb and that Splatoon remix in Urchin Underpass is beauteous! Shine thief is fun, Coin Runners is kinda boring, Renegade Roundup is great, and Balloon Battle is pretty cool too.
The game feels new and for those who wanted a Mario Kart 9 nobody is forcing you to buy 8 Deluxe, you can just wait while we all play Mario Kart on the go. This is just meant for those who didn't have a Wii U and those who want their favorite Wii U games on their new console. But Smash Bros Deluxe is stupid, we're better off just waiting for a new one at this point.
Anyways the only reason I have it at Number 4 is because I just enjoyed the other games more. This game is a really good one and I highly recommend it, and hey, those F Zero stages on 200 CC were so fast and amazing that I now am an F Zero fan because holy crap that was so blazing fast!
#3 Splatoon 2.
The reason it's hear is all the reasons I state in my Splatoon2 review, not only that but the consistent content updates with new stages, returning ones, new modes, and new features all add to why I love this game. It is truly a spectacular game. Yes that is all.
TEAM SWEATERS FOR LIFE!
#1... Wait what?
See I'm doing 1 first so it's surprise between Zelda and Mario.
OOOOOOH.
#1 Super Mario Odyssey.
Sorry Zelda fans, but Odyssey is better. Sure it might not be nearly as long, or as big of a game as Zelda, but God damn is it better! From the moments the credits began to roll I knew that I believed Odyssey was better
The game is just so fantastic, now don't get me wrong. I LOVED Zelda, even more than Splatoon 2. And while it felt great to explore the world and get stronger, to push through all the challenges, and to discover the world, Mario Odyssey is just fun.
The game always had been smiling, not clenching my teeth in an intense attack on an enemy camp, I was grinning and exploring. Trying to collect as many moons as I could. The world amazed me and I sometimes could've believe what I was experiencing.
I value joy and smiling over challenge and struggle and then accomplishment. Some value one over the other, and that's what it really comes down to. Which one you prefer more. Breath of the Wild was an astounding game but in my opinion Super Mario Odyssey was better, and you may have had a different opinion. That's fine.
There's no real reason to talk about Zelda, everything that has been said about it has been said, and the same with Super Mario Odyssey.
Well there's my list, and now, a sneak peak at 2018!
2018!
Well first of all I can't believe 2017 is almost over, it's a shame I didn't get to dig into Mario + Rabbids and that I won't have Xenoblade Chronicles 2 until later in the year (Which I really wanted to play.) but that's OK. Because I can always just include them in my list for next year!
Anyways now onto some of the chapters I plan on making. (But not all of them.)
Kirby Star Allies with a Side of Salt.
Predicting the Nintendo Directs.
Nintendo Directs with a side of Salt.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi, ETC Discussion chapters.
Why I'm so excited for Project Octopath Traveler.
Project Octopath Traveler with a Side of Salt.
Predicting 2019.
A final Splatoon 2 Ranked Mode Prediction.
As you can see a lot of Side of Salts and predictions, but that's just what came from the top of my head, there's plenty of ideas that will come over the year and I'll hopefully be able to provide plenty of content for all you readers out there.
Hopefully we'll also be able to get some discussions going and really kick off this community.
Well that's everything, let me know what your favorite games of 2017 were! Thanks for reading and have a great 2017 and 2018, bye!
