Megaman 11 Review

The Blue Bomber is back in his brand new game! With the Megaman Drought finally ending let's get right into a review of this game.

First off I've never played a megaman game before but this one is pretty good, when you play on a reasonable difficulty. I'm not a fan of games that make you repeat challenges when you die.

On Normal mode when you die you get sent back to a checkpoint usually very far from your death. This may have worked in the earlier megaman but these stages are very long and this formula doesn't lend itself to an endurance match.

Especially because the game's biggest challenge is the first Robot Master. You usually need a good collection of lives because this is the boss you can't just use a weapon on to win. You need to use your Mega Buster.

What you can do is stock up on items in the shop. I do like the shop. It's un-intrusive but if you want to use any of the powers that you're offered you can. And there's a lot of stuff in this shop.

This game feels a lot like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze in that way. You can load up on tons of really useful items if you want to or you can just never buy them. You can set your own difficulty on top of having gameplay altering difficulty.

However back to the main topic of this game. I played on Casual because Newcomer is about as easy as the end of a Kirby game and you literally have infinite lives and can't die from pitfalls.

Casual strikes a good balance of you'll still get your ass handed to you if you don't try but it's not impossible. When you die you go to the room before your death like some other difficult platformers do. I really like this and I found the difficulty to be just right.

The game has great level design and enemy variety. I absolutely loved all of the mini bosses and how each of them are precursors to different challenges you'll face with the actual boss.

The only stage I genuinely didn't like was Bounce Man's stage. It just looks ugly and the gimmicks are pretty poor.

The new double gear system was something I forgot about at first but I later figured out how to use it correctly and it fits right in with Megaman's other powers.

I like the variety the double gear adds without it ever making the game too easy. You can't just play the game in slow motion forever there's a timer and it goes down quickly.

I also really enjoyed each boss. They were all challenging and had good gimmicks. While I creamed most of them because I figured out their weakness there were some that I didn't know the weakness to so i simply used all of my powers to win.

The powers you get from every master are each very useful in different scenarios. People will rag on the chain blast but if you just use the power gear it becomes the best weapon in the game.

Acid Man's power in particular always interested me but I just never found it useful. Half the time the shield doesn't even work at blocking attacks.

Volt Man's move was probably the most useless. Bounce Man's power is better in every way.

The graphics of the game are really nice. I'm really tired of every game ever using retro pixel graphics so I love when a game doesn't pander to nostalgia. Of course the game is very simple and it doesn't do anything revolutionary but I like it.

I know complaining about the story in Megaman is a bit weird but c'mon, just the same old 'Wily just did something and got 8 masters lol.' Is the laziest thing ever.

Sure they have the double gear but it's basically the exact same story just again. The voice acting is just stupid and the cutscenes try and have a story but fail miserably.

Megaman controls like butter. I love how he has so many movement options. He can slide, just the rush coil and jet, charge shots, and with the double gear he actually stands a chance without a bunch of powers.

The game suffers from only having the 8 robot master stages and 2 wily castles. There's a ton of challenges and achievements in the post game if you want more to do but I wish they elevated the series past the generic formula they've been doing for over 30 years. Seriously only 8 stages just doesn't feel like enough.

I beat the main game in about 5 hours. It's pretty short so you have to be interested in completing challenges and getting various achievements to get the most out of this game.

Finally I want to touch on how fun this game is. Seriously there are some really hard battles but I loved trying out all of the powers for different strategies and then adding in their power gear versions there's tons of variety and different strategies for every enemy. Every challenge can be done and it's not nearly as unfair as some of the other megaman games.

This game's main problem is its lack of ambition. They don't really try to elevate the series but I understand why. It's the first true megaman in quite a while. I just hope if they do make more megaman games that they actually try something new with the formula.

I do recommend trying this game especially because it's pretty cheap. There's more than enough for you to get your money's worth so give it a shot if you're really into 2D platformers.

That's all for this quick review. I do want to review Torna but unfortunately I don't have any conclusive opinions about it so I likely won't. Though I have quite a few chapters coming up, primarily one about Nintendo's 2018 and how to improve it.

Thanks everyone for reading and have a fantastic day! Adios!
