Dr. Coyle with a Side of Salt.
So it's been about 2.5 characters since I last did an ARMS with a side of salt video and it's about time I come back to the game. Now I did play Missango and Springtron, and while Missango should be next I didn't have fun playing with him and Springtron will be in a later salt. So onto Coyle!
Dr. Coyle is the brand new character and she's pretty awesome. She's very powerful when used correctly but has some clear weaknesses to make her really feel balanced. For starters for the third time a new character's worst ability is marketed as the main one. In this case it's invisibility.
Now this ability seems really cool at first and it is relatively easy to pull off. The problem is that you're left wide open to an attack and in that time yo spend dodging a grab you'll most likely lose the invisibility you just gained. Even then Coyle has a very obvious shadow showing where she is at all times so honestly it really is worth nothing.
Now for the fun stuff! When you dash not only can you continue moving while you charge your arms but you also gain a third arm. It's great for stacking damage and is really easy to do. The downside is that your dash is slower when you do this, if you regularly dash and don't hold down Y you will move much quicker.
The difference is only really noticeable against fast characters like Springman, who really love punishing you for using the ability. Coyle is actually very slow in general, none of her arms are that quick and she doesn't really have a way to boost speed. On the other hand, you get a sense of momentum when you charge into a new arm and then dash until you can catch the enemy off guard.
Coyle is surprisingly fun to handle and I feel actual joy when I chain together various moves and obliterate my enemies.
Her third ability, which is crazy enough because no other character has three abilities, is that she can fly forever. Yeah when she jumps she can just keep jumping and never falls down, unlike Mechanica and Twintelle she can't charge her arms in when she's in the air, and her slow movement makes her susceptible to strikes.
The best thing to do is try to find some verticality and then jump, afterwards chain it into a dash and you'll slowly descend right in front of your enemy to defeat them.
Coyle should be best played by dashing to charge her arm and chaining together momentum and good jumps to use her abilities to their maximum potential.
Now her arms are another thing, I don't really like any of them. Especially since two of them are reskins with new elemental effects which is just lame. Funchuck is garbage and always will be even with the power of ice so you're left with a pretty good parasol and an OK lockjaw.
Lockjaw is a normal punch unless it's charged, which it will then fire a little blast further cementing it as an adorable mini Headlok.
In skillshot just stick to your regular arms and try to get a third arm going for some extra bonuses.
Now one thing I really like about Coyle is that it is very clearly hinted that she and Max Brass have a very interesting history before she went crazy and started experimenting on herself which is how she gained the invisibility and third arm powers. I also love how her stage is called [Name redacted.] because it's a secret ARMS lab with a bunch of Helix juices going by on a conveyor belt.
I love how they keep adding to ARMS lab and how sketchy they guys are with their secret labs and experiments like Helix, Hedlok, and Springtron. It really adds to the charm of the game and gives the series some sort of over-arcing story. Also her music is some of the best in the game. She also apparently is the one who does those party crash events that happen every other weekend which is pretty cool. And then there's something she's doing that's all building up to a new threat as Biff hints at, I just can't help but wonder what.
She's also apparently a supporter of the tournament and if you beat Grand Prix on difficult 6 or higher then she highjacks the tournament in a really cool cinematic where she beats the crap out of Max Brass.
Finally I like how she has notes on all the fighters basically insulting them and their weaknesses except Springtron because she built him. She even calls Helix disappointing. Yep she's a monster!
Overall Dr. Coyle is great and don't go invisible with her.
Thanks for reading and have a great day, bye!
