Breath of the Wild DLC With a Side of Salt.
So I enjoyed the DLC that came out in the summer enough, only problem was it all felt like it should've been in the main game minus maybe the Trial of the Sword and the costumes. We should've had Heroes Path and Master Mode.
But anyways now the developers can finally work on that new Zelda and stop worrying about Breath of the Wild and making every update available for Wii U. The real question is: Is it good and worth $20? Oh yeah and spoilers.
So the DLC starts out pretty nicely, you go into a extremely challenging section that is like Trial of the Sword on steroids. You grab the One Hit Killer but you are dropped down to a point where one hit, even with the best of armor, will kill you. Lucky you can save, because if not I would've gone insane fighting the giant swarm of bats.
I really like this section, it forces you to think on your feet and act fast you have to just go in and hope you can obliterate your enemies and destroy them with your bow. It's a fun new challenge and a pretty lengthy one at that. So you hunt down four new shrines which are all great and then you unlock this new thing that gives you three new shrine locations.
The only problem I had is there is no other help finding them, it's like hunting down all the memories. You have to be in the right location. I didn't know where you could find Moldulking so I fought the three Moldulga until I looked up a video.
To be fair there are a lot of geographical hints and for the most part I was able to figure them out.
One thing I really enjoyed was the new enemies they added, sure they were essentially bigger stronger versions of old enemies but it was nice to see the thought went into adding something new. Molduking is only weak to electricity and hits like a truck. Talus Titan fights you only in the lava, is giant, and generally an evil monster. Too bad there was only those two, but I enjoyed them for what it's worth.
So after you complete three trials you can rematch each Blight with specific items. I found lots of enjoyment out of this. It gave me a challenge that I didn't experience prior because of my army of items and 500 arrows. So after you fight the Blight's you get Kass signing a song and brand new cutscenes.
I really love these because they make all the champions third dimensional characters and have them spend time with Zelda alone. They were my favorite part of the entire experience. Also the music that plays is astounding and Revali is awesome I don't care what you people say!
So you do this for all four Divine Beasts and run into Kass in Rito Village. Now this is great because we finally get to learn who Kass's teacher is and it's done very well. He surprises me with building on the lore and story while also giving Kass more character development and explaining why he was running around signing shrine songs. Because his teacher asked him too after he accepted Link and Zelda were meant to be.
I also love how they just outright say Zelda loved Link instead of very heavily implying it. Kass's story was really nice to get to hear and I have a new appreciation for the accordion playing bird. Also apparently he has a kid.
After that you go to the Shrine of Resurrection and explore the BRAND NEW DUNGEON! This was the meat of the experience and I have to say, it was pretty good. I enjoyed how the four terminals were based on the elements of the previous beasts and how the rotating effect mixed with stasis to created some fun challenges.
I really enjoyed trying to figure out the puzzles to get the rooms spinning and when I did it felt great. Now here was my favorite part in the entire experience. I was in the water room and I couldn't reach the terminal. It was implied I had to raise the water level by using the column thing to launch bombs into the switch and make the water rise.
But I had other ideas. I got a metal ball and dropped in onto the switch, then the column threw me into the air and I was able to paraglide to the terminal. I think it was because I was standing on top of the column. In any case it was amazing to do thing incorrectly and still come out on top. It was like Super Mario Odyssey levels of do whatever you want.
Then I finished the dungeon. I was expecting some lame boss fight against maybe the four Blights but instead I was rewarded with one of the most satisfying surprises that alone made this DLC pack worth every penny. One more time, SPOILERS! Seriously go play it, it takes 5 or so hours so just do it.
The Monk, you know the random guys that have weird names and just sit in place then disappear, yeah this one came to life, and I battled him on a fucking arena in the sky! And let me tell you it's amazing!
The music is by far the best boss music ever, the fight is creative and challenging. He's quick, brutal, and has multiple surprises. He's like a Yiga Clan member on steroids that are on steroids. It's so amazing.
The fight really makes me wish that there were more of these boss battles, challenges that were unique and creative. Not just Ganon with a new hairdo, sword, and elemental attack. But if we do ever see a Majora's Mask like sequel I have a feeling that we'll see just how amazing the bosses could get.
After you win you get a motherfucking Motorcycle! You can just zip off and go, you're faster than horses and refueling is easy. Just give it a couple of screws and you're good. Oh yeah and Kass gives us one final memory that's really sentimental and nice and was that Purrah taking the picture? I'm pretty sure.
He gives you the picture and you're off. Now I was going to Hateno because I wanted to pick up some weapons from my wall after I used almost every single one of my weapons in the boss fight. I drove all the way and I encountered a worrying problem at three different occasions. The game just outright stopped and froze only to unfreeze a moment later. But I hadn't had the worst of it yet.
When I rode into Hateno things got very bad, it froze for much longer than normal and when I went into my house the weapons on the wall still hadn't loaded in and took even longer to do so.
This is a serious problem and one time the game randomly froze when I wasn't even on my motorcycle. Is this just a new thing they can patch out? Is freezing the new way to get rid of lag and low framerates? I played most of my Zelda game docked over the summer but I never encountered this.
The worst part is I came up with a fix. Odds are if you're moving that fast you won't be admiring the textures much, so tone them down! Not every grass blade needs a swaying effect and a beautiful texture if I'm just going to zip by. Seriously it's such an easy fix and if the tradeoff for no more freezing and loading problems is some lowered textures when I'm racing across the world I couldn't care less!
The team was clearly too ambitious with the motorcycle and didn't implement a proper fix for its speeds. But if the textures were toned down more power could go into loading to prevent those errors from happening.
One nice thing about when I entered my house is that you can mount the photo on the wall next to your bed and always look at it. I really enjoyed that little moment and it improved my mood from the bad motorcycle experience.
Now let's do a lightning round of the other stuff.
The new armor is fine, I like it for the most part. Some of the locations were a bit confusing but I figured them all out. My favorite of the new armor is Phantom Ganon. Now we need horse armor for Breath of the Horse to make him Phantom Breath of the Horse.
The new horse armor was a treat to find and while it doesn't look as good as the solider's armor it actually has an effect unlike the rest of the armor. This armor will let you summon your horse from anywhere, as it just teleports to you now, which is great. I did do a test and there are some areas your horse still cannot go like Hyrule Castle. But it's OK because it's still a really cool feature.
But you can also summon your motorbike almost anywhere, so which do you use? Well if you're more worried about the destination and not the journey and like doing really cool jumps and stuff use the motorbike. But if you want to take in the scenery, be free of freezing and loading errors, and care more about the journey then use Robot Breath of the Horse. Oh yeah and the saddle also gives you two extra stamina, not like it's necessary because you really only need 3 or 4 ad my horse has 5.
So I think that's everything! Did I miss anything? What was your favorite part of the DLC and is it worth it to you? Thanks for reading and have a great day, bye!
