Chapter 7

Mitch's P.O.V

After the weird mouse thing from earlier, Jerome and I stayed.... distant.... for some reason. And it wasn't all his fault, part of it is mine, for some reason I just didn't comfortable being around anyone for that matter. I think those sparks must have triggered something in each of us, that's making us so distant. Now it's around 10:30, Jerome has probably put his lazy self to bed, and looking out the window I see the soft white glow of the moon imprinting the night sky. Leaning against the window sill, the pale moon rays shine on me, and fill me with energy.

After some calming breaths, I walk into my closet, which isn't very big, and open the secret door in there that has a small staircase that leads right up to the roof. Its stupid that I've never told Jerome that I installed a way to get onto the roof without a ladder, honestly I think that he would think its awesome, but I'm worried that he'll become suspicious of why I did that in the first place. I just know that our friendship will be destroyed if he sees what the real me is like. Not that the real me is much different from what I show to everyone everyday, just, no one has ever seen the night side of me.

Once I'm on the roof, I go through the same thing I do almost every night. Sit, change, and stare for the rest of the night.

Sit: I carefully walk across the roof to the most flat/level/comfortable spot and sit down.

Change: I start to feel the moon's rays becoming stronger, as a tingling feeling runs down my spine. As usual, my skin becomes much paler, my eyes a bit more dull but a radiant midnight black with silver specks, and my hair pure white with silver streaks. This is my Midnight Form.

Stare: The most simple yet boring step. Stare at the moon for the rest of the night.

~Flashback~

Up until I was 13 I lived a pretty normal life, nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever. Well, unless you count being obsessed with the night sky. Yup, that was me, I was so obsessed with astronomy that I somehow managed to convince my parents to buy me a real telescope at age 9. I absolutely loved it! My room was painted like the night sky and was filled books on, you guessed it, astronomy, along with myths and stories about how constellations gained their place in the sky. Ignoring my sassy older sister and her sassy sidekick, my younger sister, who always asked why I was into "balls of gas in the sky." I could say my life was pretty good.

Untiiiiiiil, the night I almost went blind. Yeah that was pleasant. Anyways, thirteenth birthday, nighttime, supposed to be in bed, sounds about right. So I just couldn't resist staying up that night looking into my telescope. And if I was caught in the act, I had the perfect excuse. The other day, my class had been assigned a project to track the moon with the stars. Of course I was going to ace that as soon as I heard we were getting a science project.

So now I'm sitting, looking through my telescope when something bright as fudge shown through, rendering me blind as I pulled away. My vision was completely white, and I stumbled around until I tripped over my stool that was next to my telescope. Looking at what I'm assuming is up, I start to feel energy flowing through me. And suddenly I didn't the least bit tired.

'Sorry 'bout that mate, but it was the only way to awaken your powers.' A male, unfamiliar, voice, with an.... Australian accent? Said in my head. Who was this, I still don't know to the present day.

'Wait, did he say powers?!' I thought in a frenzy. This guy must be able to read my mind because I received an immediate response.

'Yes, you are the Child of the Night, but I don't have much time to explain. I'm going to guide you to a book that will give you answers, and don't get caught.' He said in a rather urgent tone. At this point, I was too confused to even ask questions. So I just had to hope he would ask and answer for me.

'Yeah I know this clearly confusing.' He sighed. 'I'll start with introducing myself the best I can. My name is Cicero (pronounced: Sis-er-o) and I'm a guide.' A guide? And I can't even pronounce that name. That's when the white that clouded my vision began to fade. I almost mistaken the night for the day, because once I could see again, everything was clear as day. As if I had night vision goggles but without the green.

"What's going on?" I muttered as I sat up then got to my feet.

'Make your way to a mirror and I'll explain all I can.' Cicero said in a surprisingly calm voice, and I did as I was told by making my way quietly to the bathroom. You that joke where if you try to sneak around at night everything is twice as loud? Yeah, the exact opposite happened. Somehow I got there without a sound, and I had no clue how, but I did feel slightly lighter than normal.

Once I walked into the bathroom and saw the mirror I almost collapsed again. For a moment I wasn't even sure if I was looking at a mirror, because what I saw wasn't my normal self.

What I saw was someone who had the same shape and size as me, but they had grey-ish white hair that kind of had the same color as the moon, with silver streaks in it. They were very pale, and the eyes were the most magnificent shade of black I've ever seen, along with being sprinkled in these silver specks that kind of made me wish that my eyes were that color.

'Don't be a fool Mitchell, this is a mirror so it clearly is you!' Cicero yelled in my mind. I guess he was kind of right about me being a fool, but in my defense I was too amazed to really think.

"So are you going to explain what's going on or what?" I asked finally read to get this over with. And was kinda hoping I could get this guy out of my head.

'Alright, but I need you to find something while I explain what I can.' He told me in the calmest voice I've heard him use.

"So what am I looking for?" I asked walking out of the bathroom.

'A book that will give the full explanation, its one that I gave to your parents before you were born. But they denied that you would have anything to do with it, and the truth is that they fear what it speaks of. So they tried to hide it from you, because they didn't have the guts to destroy it.' Cicero explained. For some reason I felt as if I was beginning to understand, even with the minimal information I've received. Now that I thought about it, my parents were rather secretive at times. All of this was making me even more determined for all the answers.

"So where can I find this book?" I asked looking down the empty hall. Then I came to the definite conclusion that I had night vision, because I would have been walking around blind other wise and I had to constantly remind myself that no lights were turned on.

'You're going need to very careful, and maybe some help, because it's hidden in your parents room.' He said in a way that made it seem like he was biting his lip at the end.

"Who will help me? Obviously I can't just ask my parents for it, and I'm not sure about my siblings." I asked as I walked back out to my balcony. I don't know why I walked back out, it just felt like the night sky was calling me.

I'm not too sure how it happened, but it was awesome! The light from the moon bounced off my right hand, in a way the made it reflect back into the night. But then it stopped only a few feet away from me and began to change shape. The rays slowly began to glow brightly, and giving me a warning to shield my eyes this time.

Maybe like thirty seconds later, I was able to uncover my eyes, and all I could do was gasp in awe at the sight in front of me. A snowy owl hovered there, its feathers were so pure white that the seemed to glow.

'This is Ibis, and he'll be your guardian.' Cicero said in a soft voice that was almost like it was proud.

"That's so cool!" I cheered holding out my arm hoping that the bird would land on it. Sure most owls have incredibly strong talons that could break my arm, but I was a kid! But to my dismay it just stared at me with confusion in its eyes. Then I was hit with a moment of panic, Cicero was gone. Before I had been able to feel his presence as if he was standing right next to me, but that feeling was gone. Had this all been a trick? Had this all been a build up for my death by bird? I was so scared to the point where I was paralyzed, I couldn't even move that arm that had been raised.

He came back, but not alone.

I could feel that presence, that calming presence that I had never noticed its power until just then. It was telling me to remain calm as my body relaxed. Even a small smile appeared on my lips as the owl, Ibis?, was it?, gracefully landed on my wrist. And surprisingly I didn't feel a thing, only adding more evidence that I swear this bird is made out of pure light.

"You scared me for a second you know." I said in a whisper.

'I apologize for leaving you, but I can only be with one being at a time, and I had to reexplain what was going on to this bloody bird!' I could tell he was got kind of aggravated at the end, but immediately went back to that calm feeling I loved.

"So you're going to help me get this book right?" I asked Ibis and receiving a nodded in return. He leapt off me arm and flew silently down the halls, and returning with an old book in its talons.

'I'm greatly sorry, but I must leave. Do not fret though, for we shall meet again in the future.' I'm not sure when in the future he was talking about because he disappeared suddenly and he hasn't come back for like ten years or something.

Then it was just me and this mysterious owl who had placed the leather covered book in front of me before vanishing into the moonlight.

I was alone, as I had been for many nights.

~End of Flashback~

I held onto that book from then on, over the past ten years I would look at it occasionally. Finding out how I could control moonlight and even disappear into it, a silver crescent moon on the back off my neck that I've kept hidden with my hair, I could call upon Ibis whenever I'd needed assistance, and even put up an illusion to hide my midnight form from others. It was all pretty cool at first, but it's grow dull and kind of boring saying restricted I am because of where I live.

I guess my prayers of something to happen were answered when I noticed a little black butterfly making its way toward me. I instantly put up my illusion just as it lands on my finger. Why would do that for a butterfly? I'm just not all that comfortable showing my midnight form to any living being other than Ibis.

Just looking at this butterfly reminded of how much I've been hiding from Jerome. It's actually been eating me up sense I first met him or anyone for that matter.

"I don't know..." I sigh. "I'm not sure if I should tell him."

"If I do tell him, should I tell the others?" I ask myself.

"What if he tells them without me knowing?what if he doesn't except me for who I am?" I start to worry, but that guilt took its final bite.

"You know what? I'll tell him, I'll tell him in the morning." I mutter to the butterfly.

"This is going to be a long night." I sigh again just before the butterfly flies away.

Maybe fifteen minutes later I finally get an idea to pass the time. I run back down to my room and start up my computer. I wanted to see if what Preston said about the mod was true. Next I load up Minecraft and click on the server we made earlier, but it loaded for a second before it kicked me off saying that it needed two or more players to be online. Guess he wasn't lying, now I feel bad for doubting him.

Suddenly I started feel.... dizzy was it? No. I've felt this before but I just couldn't put my finger on it.

As my body grew weaker and little black dots spotted my vision, I knew what this feeling was. It was tiredness.

The feeling was so consuming that I fell out of my chair.

'But.... wh....' I even couldn't finish my thought before falling into a darkness I never thought I would see again.

"The Child of Night is down, Sir." I say to my master with a bow. I don't know how much more I could take this, but it was necessary to fulfill the prophecy.
