Chapter Sixteen

The sisters padded in sync through the forest lit by a orange sky. Wind whistled through the trees and a lone owl told the sleepy sun that it was time to rest.

Their paws padded on the soft, spotted grass on the trail to camp. They were the first ones to pause at the entrance. Han and Pinebranch stopped behind them.

With both heads hung low, Fiona asked the question that was hanging in everyone's head. "What if we are like this forever? I don't want to be you forever. How can we face them?"

Fianna turned to face her sister. "We just have to hope that it will work . . . however slowly it might."

Their pelts brushed against each other as they entered into the camp. Driftspots was the first one to see them. "Fiona! Fianna!" He exclaimed, "Did it work?"

Fiona was the first to answer. "No," she replied miserably. "We got to the lab . . . found the serum, but. . . " she sighed, too angry and frustrated to continue.

Fianna continued. "But nothing happened."

Driftspots nodded solemnly. "I'll go tell Pondstar, then." The brown tom turned around and briskly padded to the leader's den. His tail twitched as he moved. The tom disappeared into the den, and emerged once more after a few heartbeats.

Pondstar followed, his fur smoothly flat. "Welcome back." He meowed. He padded to the center of camp where the sisters sat.

But Fiona nor Fianna responded. Their heads were hug as low as they could, as if they weighed a badger each. They breathed heavily and quickly. Fiona groaned, then collapsed onto the ground. Fianna followed suit a moment later. Dust clouds rose from the ground, then settled.

Fianna cracked an eyelid open, and blinding light rushed into her retinas. She winced and moved her head as a painful flow of pain moved through her head. She let out a short groan and withered on the ground a bit, not wanting to get up. She stood up as she slowly opened her eyes again. Familiar but new blood ran through her veins.

Fianna stretched with her paws out in front of her and her tail high in the air. Her paws were familiarly her own again.

A shriek rang out of the medicine den.

The light brown sibling prodded the other. "Fiona! Fiona! Fiona!" She squealed. "I'm myself again!!" Fianna ran out into the clearing, relishing the feel of her own body.

Fiona groaned as her sister left her, and slowly got up. She gave a relieving sigh and a smile. "Finally," she breathed as she looked at her own paws. She soon padded out and joined her sister. "We're ourselves again!" She proclaimed. She looked into her sister's green eyes.

"I'm finally me."
