Chapter 28 - Miracle Return

Hazel's POV

As the door swung open, Kayden strode into the mansion alongside his father and twin brother. Overwhelmed with emotion, I couldn't hold back the tears and rushed into his embrace.

"I was terrified," I managed to mumble through tears, holding onto him tightly, mindful of my growing baby bump. "I thought I'd lost you," I confessed, sincerity lacing my words as I gently touched his bruised cheeks. "I missed you more than words can say." Tears welled in my eyes again. "The moment I heard you were missing, it was like I couldn't breathe," I admitted, clinging to him once more.

"Umm..." Kayden murmured, drawing back slightly. His gaze shifted from me to his mother as he casually inquired, "And who is this woman?"

Shock rippled through me, my eyes widening in shock as I glanced at him. Was he joking? Surely, it had to be a joke.

Silly!

"It's a joke, isn't it?" I asked, attempting to mask my growing unease with a forced chuckle. Despite my efforts, a strange feeling gnawed at my heart. Kayden met my gaze with an inscrutable expression, his silence only amplifying my discomfort. "Kayden?" I ventured, my voice wavering with uncertainty.

Mira's voice carried a hint of confusion as she addressed Kayden. "This is Hazel, Kade," she clarified, her brow furrowed. Around them, a silent exchange of puzzled glances ensued, except for Draco and Jayden, who remained unaffected.

Kayden's grin widened mischievously as he quipped, "Is she your baby mama?" He raised an eyebrow playfully, teasing Jayden.

With a tender gesture, Jayden approached Clara, pressing a chaste kiss to her lips before scooping up their son in his arms. He placed a gentle kiss atop the child's head before turning to face Kayden.

"No, she's not," Jayden responded warmly, his arm encircling Clara's waist affectionately. "Clara is not only the mother of my child but also my fiancée. And this little one is Michael, your nephew," he introduced proudly, casting Clara a loving smile. "Hazel," he continued, gesturing to his twin brother, "is your baby mama."

"What?!" Kayden's voice cracked with disbelief as he stared at my burgeoning belly, his expression a mix of shock and bewilderment. He swallowed hard, his hand nervously finding its way to the back of his neck. "Is... Is that true? Are you really pregnant with... my baby?" His words stumbled out, laced with discomfort.

I gazed back at him, confusion swirling in my mind. What was happening? Why was he behaving as though we were strangers? Was this some kind of joke, a way to tease me? But his eyes... There was something missing, an absence of emotion in his gaze. It felt like we were two people who had never shared a connection.

I cleared my throat, attempting to gather my thoughts, and whispered, bewildered, "Yes. I'm six months pregnant."

"Oh... uh... Well, that's... good," Kayden stammered, mustering a forced smile as he ran a hand through his hair.

I stared at him, utterly stunned, lost for words. It felt like a nightmare. It had to be a nightmare. This couldn't be real.

"What the hell is going on?" Joshua demanded, his irritation palpable.

"Who's this?" Kayden inquired, casting a puzzled glance at my brother.

"The Devil incarnate," Joshua mocked, irritated. Kayden gave my brother a death glare.

Draco cleared his throat, breaking the tense silence. "Perhaps we should continue this conversation in the living room. I'll provide all the details there," he suggested.

"Um... I think I'll just head to my room," Kayden interjected, his voice firm. "I need some rest," he added quietly, shooting me a peculiar glance.

"Sure! Remember what the doctor said, Kayden. Take it easy," Draco affirmed, offering his son a reassuring smile.

"I'll come with you," Mira proposed softly, her brow creased with concern.

"I'll go with him, Mom," Jayden interjected, gently passing Michael to Clara. Sensing Mira's hesitation, he added, "Don't fret, Mom." Mira nodded, exhaling heavily as she turned her worried gaze to Kayden. "Come on, Kade. Let's head out," Jayden suggested to his twin.

"Yeah, I'm exhausted," Kayden muttered, his voice dry and distant as he brushed past me without making eye contact. I stood there, stunned, watching as the twins ascended the stairs.

"Haze, let's go," my mother said gently, giving me a sympathetic glance as she enveloped me in a comforting embrace, guiding me toward the living room.

I gripped the hem of my dress tightly as I sank onto the couch.

Mira's voice trembled with worry as she turned to Draco. "What's going on, Draco? What happened to our son?" she implored.

Draco's expression fell, his sigh heavy with sadness. "Kayden has temporary amnesia," he explained somberly. "He only recalls events up until last year."Gasps of disbelief echoed through the room. "And because of it," Draco continued, his gaze shifting to me, "he doesn't remember you, Hazel." His eyes held a mix of sympathy and understanding as he delivered the news. I could only stare back, speechless.

Mira's concern deepened. "When will he regain his memory?" she asked, her voice tinged with anxiety.

Draco's response was laden with uncertainty. "It could be days, months, or even... years," he admitted, his own worry evident.

"Shit!" Liam's exclamation pierced the air, his concern evident.

"The doctor advised us to ease him into remembering the events of the past year gradually," Draco stated firmly. "Taking him to places he frequents, spending time with loved ones, that sort of thing."

My throat tightened as I barely managed to speak. "Could... could it be permanent?"

Draco's lips pressed into a thin line as he rubbed his neck. "It's a possibility."

"Oh my goodness!" Mira's shock was evident as she covered her mouth, while I stared at Draco, feeling numbness creeping over me.

Kayden's POV

With eager anticipation, I gazed out the window as the car drew nearer to the grand mansion. At last, I was returning home. The endless parade of doctors and nurses, the sterile hospital room – I longed for the comfort of familiar surroundings.

As the housekeeper swung open the door, my father, Jayden, and I stepped into the opulent foyer. Suddenly, a pregnant woman darted toward me, her eyes glistening with tears of joy. With a sudden rush of emotion, she enveloped me in a tight embrace, tears streaming down her cheeks, catching me completely by surprise.

"I was terrified. " she mumbled through tears, clutching me tightly, her pregnant belly pressing against my hip as I stood there, stunned. "I thought I'd lost you," she confessed, pulling back slightly to cup my cheeks, her gaze filled with affection. "I missed you more than words can say." Tears welled in her eyes again. "The moment I heard you were missing, it was like I couldn't breathe," she added emotionally, embracing me once more.

"Um..." I mumbled, gently pulling away. I glanced from the pregnant brunette to my mother, casually asking, "And who is this woman?"

With cascading chestnut locks and captivating brown eyes that seemed to pull you into their depths, this woman epitomized my ideal. She was undeniably my type. Yet, the fact that she was pregnant meant she couldn't be my girlfriend. I had no intentions of becoming a father anytime soon.

The pregnant woman's eyes widened in shock, her gaze fixed on me, confused. I ignored her reaction and turned my attention back to my mother, patiently awaiting her response.

"It's a joke, isn't it?" the brunette asked, a hint of amusement in her voice that seemed overshadowed by sadness.

I met her gaze, words failing me as I racked my brain, searching for any trace of recognition, but her face remained a blank canvas in my memory. Damn this amnesia!

"Kayden?" she muttered nervously, her face drained of color. The spark in her eyes from before had vanished.

"This is Hazel, Kade," my mother explained, looking perplexed. Around us, everyone exchanged confused glances. Despite my efforts to remain composed, the uncertainty grated on my nerves.

Perhaps this woman is Jay's girlfriend. It was my twin brother who had been eager to start a family, so why was she acting so familiar with me? As if we were close friends. Maybe we had grown closer after Jayden introduced her to us.

"Is she your baby mama?" I teased my twin, a mischievous grin playing on my lips as I raised an eyebrow.

Jayden strode over to his friend Clara, planting a gentle kiss on her lips before scooping up a baby boy in his arms, pressing a tender kiss to the child's head before glancing back at me. Meanwhile, I watched them with confusion.

Whose baby is that? Does Clara have a son?

It feels like so much has happened in the past year, and I can't recall any of it.

Damn it!

"No, she's not," Jayden responded warmly, his arm encircling Clara's waist affectionately. "Clara is not only the mother of my child but also my fiancée. And this little one is Michael, your nephew," he introduced proudly, casting Clara a loving smile. "Hazel," he continued, gesturing to me, "is your baby mama."

"What?!" I exclaimed in disbelief, my gaze fixed on the brunette's baby bump, my jaw hanging open in shock.

No way. This has to be some kind of joke.
