Chapter 42
Veira Point of View
Scoundrelly clever!
He got the mate feeling right from the first touch. He could hear Dea in his mind. By the looks of it, he is more of a werewolf than I am.
I don't know why I'm getting angry at him when he didn't even do anything offensive to me.
"Wow, you stumble on gold even in a muddy pit; what luck you have, Dr. Cazacu." I scoffed pulling my hair back, away from my face. "You walk into Elias's trap and found a mate for yourself; a werewolf mate." I snickered at the absurdity of the scenario.
Between a werewolf and a human, a human first found out that the werewolf girl is his mate while the werewolf knew nothing about it.
Did Moon Goddess made him on her special days?
"Finding you there at that time raised the difficulty of my situation, Veira. I was on an important mission regarding life and death of millions of lives and I was somehow the key person that was supposed to drag the whole plot and act against him at the right point of time and then suddenly you popped out of nowhere giving me those electrifying butterfly-ish sparks making my heart go crazy in a second; tell me what did you want me to do? Bring you home and make a happy family; for Elias to take advantage of and eventually destroy it?"
'He has a point there. He was indeed dealing with a lot of dangerous jerks at that time. Just in this case, only in this case, I agree with your point.'
Hearing her clearly, Elder Cazacu threw a small smile towards me which isn't directed to me but to the wolf inside me.
"Don't get your head inside your knickers and continue." I grumped out giving him an irritated look. "I remember I woke up in small house owned by an old couple that runs a flower shop in the town. I take it you sent me there."
"Hmm. I did. I didn't want you to get yourself into the whole mess. The old couple were there, running the flower shop for centuries and are well known for their kindness so I asked them a favor to house you there for the night and requested them not to tell anything about me."
Oh yes, the old man and woman are indeed kind. They even made a hangover soup and narrated how I crawled on the streets in my drunken state and how they took pity on me and took me in for the night.
Goodness! I still couldn't remember what happened that night. Was I that drunk?
"Since humans are not obliged to go through the same overwhelming feeling of completely and painfully taken by their mate, I will not take it against you when you left me there just like that."
To that, Elder Cazacu sighed and held my hands tightly in his. His slowly started to make circles on my hand with his thumb as he tried to explain himself in a better way.
"Even without the sparks and electrifying feeling, my heart skipped a beat when I first saw you. I felt like a perverted pedophile when I was watching you from my table while having my drink. You got my interest when you kicked those men so easily even in your intoxicated state and trust me I did not feel that way towards any woman till then in my thirty something years of life. I never entertained ladies for pleasure." His tone was scratchy which scratched me with sincerity.
He sounded so sincere and heartfelt that I had to bite my inner cheek to keep myself from smiling.
No, I can't smile. Not yet.
"So by then you did not know of Elias's obsession for me."
"No I didn't. I left you there so you can go your way for the time being. I was planning to come back for you and maybe chase you, court you after I'm done with the king of werewolves. I didn't know I would succeed or not nor I knew not if I would be alive or dead by the end of it. My study on werewolves told me that a mate makes a wolf both strong and vulnerable, so, just so my possible death may not affect you, I chose to leave. But who would've thought you would come to the city with your performing arts ability."
'See, I was right. Didn't I tell you that day that I have a positive feeling in the city? You said it was just another city but I knew my gut feeling was directed to something or someone else.'
'And I told you I had a very bad feeling to come to this city and see I was right. We met Elias and got into his prison.'
'You are a pessimist.'
'I am being careful.'
"Alright you both, Let me finish this before you both start a civil war. The day you got caught by the pack nearby from the bar, was the day Elias knew of your location. You were smart enough to use my company as your cover that night and get out of it but the main reason you got out from there was because Elias told them to leave you. Elias was fully prepared to capture you once you leave the pack grounds but luckily I came to know it was you who caught Elias's interest."
"So, you didn't know I was there in the same city till then?"
"No, any tracking from my side can be found out so I did not make any efforts to track you. It was only when the rogue beta informed him about your location did I come to know about the blind obsession Elias has for you. When Elias was told you used my position in my company as your way to escape from them, I suggested him to not capture you there and leave you under my care. I said I shall babysit you for him."
What an actor!
I thought I have fine theatrics but he is my ancestor!
"Let me guess, you advised him to win me over after he gets what he wants so no one shall stop him from getting me. In the name of keeping an eye on me, you brought me into a spotlight to make sure Elias can watch me from afar, simultaneously working on his own goal."
That was indeed quick thinking!
Destiny must've played its part to bring us together in one way or the other.
"Right on point. That was the reason why I readily handed over my business to you. In the name of babysitting you, I was also keeping you away from Elias. It was only when I met you again in my office that I came to know; the voice I keep hearing in my head was Dea's, your wolf's. I started enjoying your conversations, your bickers, the way you tried to deduce I'm your mate, the way Dea lead you to me, the way you tried to seduce me but failed miserably. Nah, I wouldn't say you failed in that, it's just that I did not let you see the desire you evoked in me."
"The more I spent time with you, the more I started to understand you and Dea. I knew you have trust issues. By how you grew up alone and by all the incidents you encountered in your life, I can clearly see you have insecurities and it's not just against everyone else but against your own mate too. That is why when you decided to reveal your identity to me on the full moon night; I tried my best to stop you. If you told me then, then today, I would be guiltier than I am already now." His words softened the firmness in me.
With the kind of eyes he was giving me, with how he is telling me that he did not intend to lie to me, with such gentleness he is giving clarifications to me, my resolution of keeping him away is slowly melting.
I know he isn't exactly wrong in what he did but somehow –
Am I being insensible by still having this anger and reserve in me towards him?
"So, you heard everything." I asked lowly, almost in a whisper. "I and Dea made a fool out of ourselves and you enjoyed it without having to pay for the ticket. You have such a good life, Cazacu." By Goddess, now that I think over what all I and Dea talked and did in front of him, I feel so damn embarrassed.
If I look at myself in a mirror, I would say I contributed a new shade of red to the color palette.
"Veira –"
"You know, I – " I gulped down not know what to say.
We just sat there in silence, each of us in own thoughts. I should've not heard him out. Look at me now, I softened towards him.
'So, how about I be the broker of this negotiation?'
Both of us went quite, giving Dea the opportunity to say what she wants to.
'Veira has her own doubts and I had my own as well, but listening to you; you are not in the wrong too, Elder Cazacu. So, I suggest- '
"You suggest?"
'Since you are the older one among us and since you are so taken by us; court us again. You are on your won in this. I and Veira will have full rights to give you hard time but you as a potential boyfriend should take it with a smile.'
Cazacu's lips went from straight line to a parabola in microseconds. His smile blinded me literally. But when he noticed I have no smile on, his own faltered a little.
"Can we try again, Veira."
'About Veira - give me lifetime coupon to beauty salon, do my manicure and pedicure to my limbs and help me with bleaching my fur and do just all what a boyfriend would do for wolf-girlfriend, I will take care of Veira. Beware; I only sell Veira for rich herbal products.'
Dea is indeed the most loyal wolf ever!
