Chapter 4

Valeriu Ion Cazacu Point of View

"The preliminary tests came out satisfactory, Dr. Cazacu." Satisfactory? Nay, that wasn't the result I was looking for.

I read through the test results, skimming over the changes that can be made and finding out the right places for the change.

"Increase the second and third components by 0.3% and test them again." I ordered my assistant researcher, Dr. Patrick, handing him the results sheet.

He nodded wordlessly and went on to do as said. The virus we are developing will be a breakthrough in the medical industry if it turns out to be the way I planned.

Working in a large company is nothing great compared to be working as a senior researcher who creates and develops new medicines. My passion for my job knew no bounds when I'm determined to make impossible possible.

"Dr. Cazacu, why change only second and third components to amplify the results? Isn't the seventh component the base for every other material? So changing it would bring a balanced outcome, is it not?" Ace, one of the interns working under me questioned.

Scanning through the vast laboratory, I found Patrick looking through the lenses and implementing the trials again as notified.

The long line of eight interns stood attentively before me waiting for my answers. I smiled at their curiosity and sat on my table before them.

I should give it to this batch of interns; they are really determined to learn all they can. Unlike the past batches, this one has it all to make a great team of pharmacologists if trained in a right way.

"Tell me Ace, You are making pasta but in the process you added more salt than needed. What will you do?" To my question, Ace scratched his head hesitantly as he gave me an embarrassed smile.

"Uh, I don't know how to cook, Professor." This made me chuckle. Giving him thumbs up, I looked to the person next to him for the answer.

"You tell me, Specter and Lyla." The both looked at each other and turned back to me giving me a shy smile each.

Ah, these two are the first one to date from this batch. Young love indeed is amusing.

"I would add extra water or starch to balance it." Specter answered not giving Lyla a chance to reply.

"Why would you add starch and water? Isn't pasta the base ingredient? Pasta without pasta is not called pasta; so it should balance every other addition neatly."

"Indeed. But it is not made to balance the spices. Without those spices and other ingredients, no matter how much of pasta you add in the dish, it tastes awful in the end." Lyla continued to answer.

Hearing the answer, I shrugged at them silently telling them that they should know the answer by now.

Realization dawned unto them when they slowly started to nod their heads. "Every component is important in making a medicine. There is only very fine negligible line from turning a medicine to a poison which is determined by the utilization of components in right proportions. This is the reason why we, pharmacologists, go through such pain throughout the trial and error procedures."

The interns took out their small notepads and noted down everything I said. "Now all of you write a paper each on our ongoing research on medicinal virus to cure tumors. A brief proposal with a column of your understanding on the study and the ideas you want to share. You are due to present the paper by the coming Tuesday."

The group of kids grumbled at constrained time limit; however they walked away to finish their assignments.

My smile widened looking at the new batch of kids who are so eager to learn a lot all at the same time. They are competitive in nature, still helpful to each other.

With a little lesson on teamwork and work management, they shall make a great team.

Turning through the hallway, I walked to my office giving a polite smile to my colleagues who passed by. I held the knob of the door to my office to go in when Dr. Silva stopped me.

He is four years senior to me and has worked on pretty good drugs that helped the medical industry.

"They rejected it." He spoke giving me an exhausted nod. I returned his nod and opened the door for him to walk in.

"Which one? The bone stents or cardiovascular stents?"

"Come on, Valeriu, you know the bunch of old shits sitting high and mighty up there. Of course the new development on bone stents would benefit the company and people so they rejected the proposal naturally, saying the stream is too narrow for any further developments." He banged the table hard as anger blew out of him.

I can see how affected he is when his dream project is rejected by the higher authorities. Not to mention when the project has so much potential in it.

Although he is one of the senior most doctors and a director of the company, he has no firm say in the lot of old cunning directors who sees everything as per commercial value.

"What about the Managing Director? After all, the final decision is still taken by him." My words made him scoff scornfully.

Albeit it isn't directed to me!

"This is VIBE, sire; the company where the employees don't know how their leader looks like. Hell, we don't even know if there really is an owner or not and if there is, then is it he or she. How will all the proposals reach the person who is hiding in the dark with a long line of selfish materialist directors lining in front?"

His anger has good reason. The managing Director of the whole VIBE incorporation is a person who works from the dark and has never consulted anyone in the circle.

Not even the boards of directors know how he or she looks like. His personal assistant is the only person who knows him and acts on behalf of him. If he were the archer, his personal assistant is the arrow.

"Try to send the proposal to his PA and see if it reaches the person in question. Your method of making the bone stent is new and if implemented right, then it would be a huge success. It would be such a pity if it isn't seen through till the end." He contemplated over my words and nodded positively.

"You are right; trying doesn't hurt." He decided just as his phone rang.

Mouthing the name of the caller to me, he picked the call with a sneer. It was Director Zhang that called him.

"Mr. Zhang, how may I help you?" He answered.

"Hmm, yes, two days ago! Right. Ten out of fourteen rejected it. Alright. Oh? But how? When? Yes understood but that's surprising though. Alright Mr. Zhang, I shall send it." By the time he finished answering the call, he has this huge grin on his face but he is also surprised and confused altogether.

"What made you smile that big?"

"The proposal got accepted." He huffed in a surprised laugh.

"Accepted? The bone stent one?" He nodded confirming me.

"Why did they accept after rejecting it almost unanimously?" I wondered out loudly.

Like Silva said, those old cunning directors are really made out of steel when it comes to gaining personal benefits. Nothing can stop them from gaining it.

What made them change their decision suddenly?

"Not the directors but the Managing director did." That confused me as well.

"The MD accepted the proposal?" He nodded again affirming me.

But –

"How? You didn't send it to out yet. That bunch of old men is not so kind to help you, then how did you get the approval?"

How the hell did he get the damn approval?

"They said that the MD is finally here; ready to show herself to us. In Mr. Zhang's words, she is a young beautiful girl, great in both business and negotiation."

She?

Beautiful girl?

A girl?

Wait a damn minute; the MD is not even an older woman but a girl?

"Let's go. I need to see who this girl is; who the owner of the whole incorporation is." In quick steps, I ran out of my office to the chairperson's office to meet the girl in person.

Following me is Silva who walked behind me in complete excitement.

Reaching the highest floor of the building, I saw the personal assistant of MD/Chairperson who shared the same confusion and surprise as me.

My eyes met with his flustered ones and the way his eyes moved rapidly here and there in urgency, I understood he is as much shocked as all of us.

"Dr. Cazacu, Dr. Silva, this is our chairperson and MD who is with us today to inspect our work closely." Dan, PA of our precious MD spoke as he walked us inside the office.

The first thing I saw was her back. She is definitely very young judging by her posture and voice. She has long voluminous hair falling to the middle of her waist and her voice, it sounded so youthful.

Hearing Dan introduce us, she finally turned to me and boy was I blown away by her.

The girl is still a kid!

She looked not more than twenty two making me eleven years older to her. With the long years I worked, in my eyes, that girl is not more than a child.

"Hello gentlemen, I'm Veira. Pleased to meet the real backbone of my company." She sounded confident and firm.

Oh really?

She is the chairperson? Her?

Then what am I?
