Chapter 26 ~ Future [End]
8 years later
"Alright everybody, gather 'round." I looked up from my laptop towards the voice. Liam had climbed on top of a box to address the group of students on the deck. "I hope everyone is excited for today, I sure am." He smiled brightly. "Now, I need you to listen carefully as to what we're going to do today."
I leaned against my work table as I listened to his speech. I had heard this speech a million times by now, but his excitement never failed to make me smile."Now then, let's get to work-" he jumped off the box. "We have sharks to catch."
It's been, what, seven years since I graduated high school. After I did I took Liam up on his offer and joined his team permanently. At first, it was hard work. It wasn't just for fun anymore, it was work. There were people expecting things from me, which was a weird change.
But it wasn't long until I got used to it. It was a lot of fun getting to know his crew, whose names I know now. It was also a lot of fun once he started up his internships again. And being part of his research team meant I got to join him on those. It was weird at first, helping out people who stood where I once did. But eventually, I got used to that too. I understood why Liam found it so fun.
"Are you ready for today?" I was pulled out of my thoughts when I saw Liam walk over to me. "Of course."I said back confidently, "Are you." I smirked, turning back to my computer, knowing the answer to that question. "I'm always ready." Liam laughed as he looked out to the ocean.
"I just hope we have more luck than yesterday." He sighed. The catches had gone down bit by bit. Same for our trackers. But that didn't stop Liam. He had taken it as a sort of side mission. Now the catching wasn't just about research, he also wanted to stop fishing once and for all. When it comes to sharks, that is. "I think we all do," I commented as I opened up a new document.
We spent our time waiting by getting everything ready, making sure we were as efficient as we could be so that when we do catch a shark we can get it back in the water as soon as we could, making sure to not damage the population any further. I was in charge of keeping track of this on the computer. Making sure everything was charted correctly. As much as I enjoyed being out in the water, I somehow found more joy in being behind the screens. I used to do that a lot anyway.
Liam and the rest of the team were in charge of collecting all the samples, They'd help put everything in the system when we were back at the lab. But I usually got pretty far on the ship. I made sure to prepare it so that all we had to do was fill in the time of collection and we'd be set.
Once I was done I leaned back, looking over the deck at the many students. They were all standing in their usual groups. Looks of nervousness and excitement were on their faces.
"It's taking too long." Liam sighed as he sat down on the stool next to me. "It's been ten minutes." I laughed, turning to him. "That's too long, I want to get started already." He complained, leaning onto the table. "It usually takes longer than ten minutes," I said back, closing my laptop. "I know, it always takes too long." He sighed.
I let out a laugh as turned to look at him. "You just have to learn to be more patient." I smiled. He looked back at me unimpressed. "Or maybe we need to find a new spot to fish." He shot back. "You know that's not going to change anything. We've tried that before." I sighed. Liam took a breath as he turned to look at the group.
"Why don't you just pass the time talking to them," I suggested. "You're supposed to be teaching them things, you know," I added. "I could but-"he looked back at me. Ï'd much rather spend time with you."He smirked.
"Very cute, but you can do that later," I said back. Though I looked collected, inside I was trying so hard not to show how happy that made me. "fine."He sighed as he stood up. "Guess I'll go show off my teaching skills." He smirked. "Have fun, Mr. Hartley." I smiled. "Thanks- Mr. Hartley." he joked "It's Mr. Wilson, to you," I said back. "Not for long." He winked before turning towards the students.
Right, there is something I forgot to mention. We aren't just dating anymore. A few months ago we got engaged and ever since then he couldn't help But call me by his last name.
He likes me using his things, whether it's his clothes, his name or well... Other things. But I didn't mind, I liked using his things too. Although I'm not sure if I'll be taking his name, I'm pretty attached to my own name.
I watched him as she talked to the other students. He seemed to enjoy himself quite a bit, even though he was hesitant about going over there. He glanced over at me a few times but all I did was smile back at him
This wasn't the future I had pictured when I signed up for this internship all those years ago. I thought after that one week at sea I'd go back to school and study for the rest of my life. No one could've told me that after just seven days on a small boat surrounded by water a group of students. I'd end up finding the love of my life, the one who'd give me the future I never dared to have...
But that is exactly what I got. And I wouldn't have it any other way
The end
