Chapter 17 ~ Back to the Mainland
It was awkward the next morning. We spend a little more time together on deck before both go to sleep. Liam had stayed up longer to finish his report before turning in himself. When we woke up we had a lot of work to do on the boat as it headed back to shore.
This time we were gonna stay on the mainland. Which disappointed me a lot. This past week has been one of the best weeks of my life, but it is done now. I was gonna miss being out at sea, catching sharks, hanging out with everyone. But most of all it meant saying goodbye to Liam.
After what happened last night I wasn't sure what we were anymore. Did he mean that kiss the way I wanted or was it just a spur-of-the-moment thing? The best way to find out is to just ask him. But ever since I got up I haven't been able to talk to him. As he was busy making sure everything was in its place. I helped where I could, labeling things and putting them away where they were supposed to. But I got distracted every time Liam walked by me. But he was focused on his work himself.
About an hour later we were all done, and everyone went over to different parts of the boat to relax as we got closer to shore. I took this time to hang out around where the platform was, staring out into the sea as the wave crashed against the hull. I took a deep breath as I tried to cope with the fact that this was my last day.
I looked back towards the railing as I saw a figure move in close. It was Liam, he was copying me a few meters to my right. I took another breath before making my way over to him. "Hey..." Oh boy, it really is awkward. "Hey," He smiled back, turning his body to face me. "D- Did you finish your report in time?" I asked, not sure what to say. He nodded, "This morning, yeah." He said, staring at me."Do you think it's gonna be enough?"
"I hope so." He took a step closer, not breaking eye contact. I awkwardly stood up straight as I looked down at him. "Did you really come here to talk about the report?" He smiled. I let out an awkward laugh. "Not-... really, no" I admitted. "I wanted to talk about what happened last night-" I said, fidgeting with the railing. "What about it?" He smirked.
I took a breath before I spoke. "I just wanted to know if you meant it like- you know. If it wasn't just something that happened- not like a spur-of-the-moment thing. Because I kind of really like you and if it was just because of the mood I don't- I just don't want to get my hopes up'' I struggled to get my words out, feeling both incredibly awkward and scared about the situation.
He pulled me out of my thoughts when he placed his hand on mine. Stopping me from talking. I looked back at him surprised as he smiled up at me. "Calm down, you're fine." He said. I did mean it." He smiled, locking eyes with me again. "It wasn't a spur-of-the-moment thing, or well- maybe it was, but it did want it to happen." He explained. "Are you sure?" I asked nervously. He let out a laugh as he let go of my hand. "I'm sure." He put his hand on my shoulder. "You better get ready, we're about to enter the harbor." He let go of me and walked off again.
There were still some things I wanted to say, but I guess I missed my chance. I looked back at the water a final time before letting go of the railing completely, heading down to my room to pack my things., for real this time.
We all gathered on deck as the boat made its way onto the harbor, once it had properly docked we all got off. Everyone went their separate ways again, putting their things in their cars, or having friends drive them to the train station.
I, on the other hand, stayed behind a bit. I had put my things in my car, but I stood there a bit, watching as everyone got off the boat. Liam was the last to do so. He walked off with the captain and they'd there for a chat. I couldn't help but stare at them as they talked.
Suddenly they looked at me. I was about to open my car door and hide in there when Liam started to walk in my direction. He walked up to my car, "Leaving so soon?" He smirked. "Well, yeah. We're done here right, what else is there to do?" I shrugged. He nodded. "You have a point, but that doesn't mean you have to go home yet." I looked at him confused. "I wanted to ask," He started, leaning onto my car slightly.
"Would it be weird for me to ask you out... On a date." He smiled. I let out a laugh. "I- why would that be weird?" I asked. He shrugged. "Well, I am technically your teacher. In a way at least." He said with a laugh. "It's not weird.." I said back, a serious look on my face.
"So? Is that a yes?" Liam said with a smirk, leaning over the car roof. I smiled, looking down briefly before meeting his eyes, "Yeah, sure." I said. He smiled brightly as he pushed himself off the car, taking a step back. "Great." He said. "You have my number right, just text me your address, ill pick you up at seven." He said before walking away.
I watched him as he walked back to the others at the boat. I couldn't hide my smile. It wasn't over. Not yet, we were going to see each other again. We were going to see each other tonight. And on a date, no less. I did a little imaginary victory dance in my head, but that's when I fully processed what he said. He said tonight- we were going tonight. I had to get home quickly to get ready, seeing as it was already close to twelve. I quickly got into my car and headed home. I glanced over to Liam a final time as I drove past him.
