Chapter 14 ~ Rescue
I ran to the railing, hanging over to try and see if I could spot where she was. But she was too far away. "We need to get closer," Liam said, who already knew what was going on. "What do you want to do?" I asked, looking over at him.
"We need to make sure they don't get her." He pushed himself off the railing and ran up to the captain. I saw them talk. Well, it started that way, but it looked like they started yelling at each other. Liam ran back out of the control room, irritated, he made his way to the side of the ship. I ran over to him as he jumped over the edge and into one of the fishing boats. "What are you doing?"I asked, leaning over the reeling.''He doesn't want to go any closer, so we'll have to do it ourselves." He said as he started the ship.
"We?" I was confused. I looked over at the people on deck. One of the fishermen had already spotted us and was on his way over. "If you want to help me, you better jump in now, or I'll leave without you." He said. I looked back for a second before jumping down next to him.
He smiled at me softly for a second before focusing on getting the ship started. "Hey, what are you doing?"One of the men appeared from the ship, looking down at us. "We're just borrowing this for a second, I'll make sure it comes back in one piece," Liam said as he accelerated and we were speeding off. "Hey, wait!" the man yelled, but there was no way for them to get us back now.
"What are you planning to do when we get there?" I asked as I looked over to him. He had his eyes fixed on the ship as it slowly got closer to us. "Make sure that the shark isn't caught." He said. "And how are we gonna do that?" I asked. He stayed silent as we got closer. I thought about repeating the question, but I didn't. I guess I'll just have to see if he even had a plan.
We made it to the ship a few minutes later. I looked over at Liam as he scanned the ship. I could almost see him thinking. "So now what do we do?" Liam stood up, walking up the bow of the small ship. It rocked back and forth as he did.
"Let's just scare her off for now. It might be long enough for us to get this boat out of this ocean." He said, looking around for Shaka.
I nodded and got up as well. I helped him look around the water. If we wanted to scare her off in the opposite direction of the boat, we first needed to see where she was.
"The tracker went off not that long again she couldn't have gotten far," Lism said, irritated that he didn't see any sign of her. I kept looking when Liam suddenly stopped.
"Damn it. Were too late." He said under his breath as he sat back down. I looked back at the ship, trying my best to see what he meant. That's when I saw it. A few men were standing toward the edge of the ship, looking down into the water as they pulled up one of the nets.
Liam started the engine and started moving the boat towards the ship. I lost my balance and fell back next to him. But he didn't even seem to notice, his eyes fixed on getting to the shark.
When we got to the ship, some of the men spotted us, yelling down as they pauzed the net. "What the hell is this? What are you doing here?" The yelled.
Liam stopped the boat, getting up to yell at them.
At this point, we were close enough for me to see down into the water. And he was right. At the end of the net was Shaka. Intertwined in the netting, unable to escape.
"I could ask you the same thing, fishing for sharks here is illegal -" Liam yelled up angrily. "Shark? We are doing no such thing -" the man yelled back before laughing among his crewmates.
"We can clearly see that's exactly what you're doing-'' Liam shouted. "Yeah, well. It's not like you can prove it, " the man yelled back.
"The proof is right here." Liam leaned over the boat, gesturing towards the nets. "It's not gonna be there for long." The man yelled before pressing the button. The net started rising again, pulling Shaka closer to the surface.
"Shit!" Liam yelled as he stared down at it. "Shit shit shit! What now?" He said to himself as he frantically tried to think of something. I looked around for the same reason when I spotted a knife on the boat. The fisherman used this for their own nets and fishing lines.
I looked back down at the nets coming up. And without a thought, I jumped in after it. "What are you?-" I heard Liam try and stop me, but it was already too late, I was in the water.
I couldn't quite see what was going on down there. But the splashing of shaka combined with the nets gave me an idea of where to go. When I got closer, everything was clearer. I went down towards the top of the net before slicing my way through it, being careful not to hurt Shaka.
Once I got her free, I swam away from her, to not be in the way. I was slightly afraid she was going to lash out and attack me after what had just happened. But instead, she swam past me.
I looked around as she swam off before I went back to the boat. I breached the surface, taking a big breath in before I started to cough. I was surprised at how long I had stayed underwater without air.
"What the hell was that!?' I looked up at the boat as Liam stared down into the water. I showed him a smile before pulling myself onto the boat. He grabbed my arms as he pulled me in further. "That was one of the stupidest things you could have possibly done." He scolded, staring down at me.
"I chased her off, didn't I." I smiled, looking back at him. "You- that's -" he stuttered, not sure what to say.
"What the hell - you can't do that, those are out nets," one of the men yelled at us once they had realized what I had done. Liam turned back to them, rescuing the argument. "I told you you can't fish in here. If you try, we will stop it."
"You're going to pay for this-" the man yelled, but Liam ignored him. He took a breath before sitting back down. He turned the boat around and headed back to our ship. "Are you alright?" I asked, and he had a very interesting expression. A mix of anger and relief.
"Am I okay?" He let out a laugh." You just jumped into the open ocean with a shark. Just to cut the nets, it was in. Are you okay?" He asked, looking down at me.
I pushed myself up from the floor, sitting up. "I think so?" I said, looking over my limbs, checking if they were all there.
At this point, I was full of adrenaline. I know it was a dumb thing to do, yes. But in the end, it was good. I save her. She won't be coming back to that ship for at least a little while. Maybe enough for us to go back with the proof and get the crew of that shop arrested
Liam shook his head. "That was such a dumb thing to do-" he said. I put the knife back where I found it, staring up at him. "But it was kind of cool," I said.
Liam looked down at me, and as he met my eyes, his expression changed. The frustration was gone, replaced by a smile. His face turned red as she looked away from me. Focussing on steering the boat. "I-it was... kind of cool, I guess..."
I felt myself blush, too, I stared up at him. "But don't do it again-" he added. Smiling down at me.
