Chapter 12 ~ Drawing

And we're back on the ship. I yawed as I leaned onto the railing, looking out to the ocean. Behind us, the shore kept shrinking as we went further into the ocean. I was excited to go back to just work, and not have to deal with all these feelings.

Not that it's not gonna be hard, with Liam here. Especially not after what happened yesterday. I looked down at the main deck where Liam was walking around, talking with his crew. We were probably not going to be doing much today, as it is quite a while to go out to the fishing spot.

So I had already made sure to take my sketchbook with me. I started sketching, as I occasionally looked down at all the people. I sketched to ship a bit, with some of the research material. I ended up even sketching the platform with the sharks we caught yesterday. It made me even more excited about the next shark we're gonna catch, what it was gonna be, how big it was. And will it be tagged or do we tag it?

Will I tag it again, or will Liam do it? It would be cool to tag again, but I don't mind watching him work. The way he looked so passionate when he jumped on the platform, jumping onto the shark no matter how big it was, how much it moved. The way his eyes sparkled when he helped his crew and we took the samples from the shark.

And the look on his eyes when he watched the shark swim away, the cheers from the rest of the crew mere background noise.

I let out a sigh as I looked down at him, but he wasn't there. I let it go and looked at my drawing. Oh shit- I had started drawing him. I was so lost in thought I hadn't even realized. I stared down at my work. It looked like him so much it was weird. I kept staring at it, it was like looking at the person himself. Maybe even better, as it was the Liam I imagined in my head.

"Enjoying the view." I jumped up when I heard his voice behind me. I pulled the sketchbook closer, hiding the page as he walked up to me. "Oh, hey, yeah well I-" I stuttered. "I was just drawing," I said.

Why did I say that, yes I was drawing, but I can't show him this. That's super weird."Drawing huh? Can I see? "He asked, looking down at my sketchbook. "Well, there not that good so-" I said, not wanting to show him. "Oh come on, you're amazing, let me see." He pushed, reaching out to my sketchbook. I took a step back, closing the book as I pulled it against my chest. "No!" I said.

He looked up at me surprised. I felt instantly bad. "I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean," I said. Relaxing my shoulder. "It's fine, I was pushing," he said back. I let out a sigh as I walked back to the railing. He leaned onto it, staring out to the deck below.

"I'm really happy to be back here." He smiled. I was happy about the change of subject. "Yeah, it is better than the city, that's for sure." I joined him, looking down as well. "I like the city too, but nothing beats the open sea." he closed his eyes, as the wind blew in his face. I stared down at him as he kept his eyes closed. I lost my grip on my sketchbook as I felt my face turn red. I was about to lean in and ask him something when there was a shout.

"Hey Liam, can you come take a look at this!" One of his crew yelled. I looked away quickly as he opened his eyes. "Yeah, be right there!" He pushed himself off the railing. "See you later."He smiled. I watched him as he walked down. He joined his crew and started to work on the computer again.

I opened the sketchbook again. String at the drawing. That was really close. I ran my fingers over it before taking the top of it. I ripped it out of the book and folded it up, before putting it in my pocket. I can't let him see this.

I went down toward the beds, where I tucked my sketchbook away into my bags before joining the rest of the deck. We were getting closer to our usual fishing spot. This time everyone started getting ready without Liam's instructions. I joined some other students as we prepared the vials for future samples.

I glanced up at Liam sometimes, as he looked down at the computer screen concentrating. I didn't know what he was staring at. But whatever it was. I couldn't help but feel a little jealous of it. I shook my head, clearing my thoughts before concentrating on my own work, making sure everything was ready for the next catch.

I couldn't wait to see what it was...
