Chapter 8 - Football Game
Erza's POV
"Miss? Miss?" someone's voice woke me up. I groggily opened my eyes to see a waitress shaking me.
"What is it?" I yawned.
"You've been sleeping for a long time, it's nearly 9:30" she informed me.
Wait... WHAT?! 9:30?! I've been asleep for a few hours, and not just that... Jellal never came. My heart shattered as I realised he stood me up. Here I was, sleeping on a bench in a red formal dress, when Jellal's probably laughing his head off somewhere. I can't believe I fell for that.
"Are you alright, miss? I thought you looked a bit cold so I got you a jacket" the waitress said.
I looked down to see a jacket draped over me. "Thank you. I'm fine, I'll just catch a taxi home" I smiled at her.
The waitress didn't look convinced but still went back to the Magnolia Restaurant. I sighed and called for a taxi to take me home.
Well, Friday was a great night. Not! I got stood up on a date, slept in the cold in public and then cried myself to sleep. The weekend went by quickly and I was now at school for a new week. No doubt Jellal is going to come up to me and apologise. I got out my books from my locker and slammed the door shut to see Jellal standing next to it. My heart jumped; from surprise or happiness, I'm not sure.
"Hey Erza. I- I wanted to talk to you about the other night" he started.
"Save it" I snapped harshly and walked to class. I let out a breath and it hurt when I said that.
When I got to my classroom, I chose a seat near the window and gazed outside. I tied my red hair in a ponytail and got ready to face Lucy. More students filed in and Lucy sat next to me with Natsu on her other side. Lucy kept texting and calling me over the weekend to ask about the date but I just ignored them.
"Hi Erza" she said.
"Hey."
"So... are you going to tell me about your date and why you didn't answer any of my texts or calls?" she asked.
I could either lie about it or tell her the truth. "Jellal never came" I blurted.
Lucy's eyes widened. "He stood you up? I never thought he would. What else happened?"
I then told her all the details about me waiting for Jellal, me falling asleep on the bench and the lady waking me up. Lucy gave me a sad, pitying smile.
"Alright class! Time to do the test" the teacher yelled.
Groans were heard throughout the room and usually, I would have smirked because I studied but I forgot there was a test this time. Let's hope I don't fail. The teacher came around and gave out the tests. I gave it one glance and knew I wouldn't do well.
It was finally lunchtime and I was walking to our table with Lucy. As we got there, Jellal shot out from his seat. I turned to walk away but his firm grip was on my arm.
"Erza, please let me explain."
"That's what every guy says and they have a lame, stupid excuse."
"I swear I didn't mean to. I was going and then Zeref, and-" Jellal started.
My eyes widened at the mention of Zeref and thought immediately popped into my head. "You went with Zeref? You agreed and what, joined his gang? I can't believe you! I thought you changed and I actually loved you! But no, you're the same violent guy always getting in trouble with gangs, huh? I can't believe I loved you and I trusted you" I shouted.
Jellal looked shocked and he shook his head. "What? No, that's not what happened" he started but I didn't let him finish as I walked off.
"Erza... I think you should listen to his side of the story" Lucy told me as she walked beside me.
"So you're taking his side now?" I stopped abruptly and faced her. "I heard his side and he said he went to see Zeref when he promised he wouldn't."
"I'm sure he had a reason."
I couldn't believe it. My best friend was taking Jellal's side. With my lunch in hand, I stormed off to eat in peace. I didn't even realising I was crying until my tears dropped onto my hand. How could this happen to me? At least eating my strawberry cheesecake took things off my mind.
A shadow loomed over me and I thought it was Lucy. "Go away" I sighed.
"Well hello to you too, Erza" Simon said as he sat down beside me. I wiped my tears away and the corners of my mouth turned up.
It was nice to see a friendly face because over the week, he changed. He was now nicer and didn't bother me or try to hit on me. Simon was now back to his usual self, my best friend at my old primary school.
"Are you okay?" he brought me back to reality.
"Yeah... just tired" I settled on saying.
"You want to sit with us?" Simon offered.
"Sure, thanks" I smiled and stood up. With the remains of my lunch, I followed him to a table where Wally, Milliana and Sho sat.
"Hey Erza" they said in unison.
"Hey" I replied and sat down next to Milliana.
The boys chattered quietly to themselves but it was awkward for me because I hadn't talked to them for a long time.
"So Erza, how are you?" Milliana asked and I gladly answered.
It was the question that started conversation with my once best friend and it was the question that brought back a friendship. Also, it put my mind off Jellal. We talked about what we had been doing lately and just stuff about us. The bell rang to signal the end of lunch and everyone left except for Simon.
"Um Erza... I was wondering if, if you would go with me to the football match this Friday?" Simon asked shyly.
"Sure."
"Thank you! It means the world to me; having you in my life again" Simon grinned at me. I hugged him and then ran off to class after saying good bye.
It was one of the biggest football game of all football games, at Fairy Tail High. It was the time when we went against one of the best schools: Sabertooth High. They were the best at everything and now, we're going to beat them.
"Go Fairy Tail!" The cheerleaders finished their cheer, holding Evergreen up, as always.
I rolled my eyes, she's always hogging the spotlight. Near the back of the cheerleaders, I could see Lucy. I searched the bleachers to find Simon and then I spotted him near the front. He waved his hands madly at me and he grinned when I waved back. I was making my way over when I bumped into someone.
"I'm so sorry" I apologised.
"It's okay" Jellal's voice whispered into my ear. I froze and breathed in his familiar scent. He gave me a small smile but I speed walked away.
"Hey Erza!" Simon, Wally, Milliana and Sho greeted me.
"Hey guys" I replied and took a spare seat next to Simon.
"It's starting" someone amidst the crowd shouted and everyone's eyes went to the football players in the middle of the field.
I watched as Sabertooth started kicking the ball around and got a goal. Come on, Fairy Tail, come on. Fairy Tail stepped up their game as Laxus got the ball and we got a goal. We all cheered and the game went on. It was really tough since both teams were good but with Natsu and Gray, we're gonna win this thing for sure!
"Erza?" Simon asked me quietly.
I watched Natsu take the ball from Sting before turning to Simon. "Hmm?"
"You look really nice today" he complimented.
"Thanks" I blushed as red as my hair. When he didn't say anything more, I went back to watching the game.
While I was watching, I swore I could feel someone watching me. What if I had a stalker? That would be scary. I looked to the other side of the bleachers and saw Jellal's piercing stare. Our gaze locked and time was frozen. I eventually broke it as I looked to the game again. Jellal looked sad and jealous. Did he think I was going out with Simon? No way. My heart still lies with Jellal, even if he doesn't know it.
I mentally groaned. I'm so stupid. I still love Jellal yet he's sitting opposite me, so far away. What am I doing? Like Lucy said, I didn't hear his side of the story. Do I want to hear it? I mean, how bad can it be? It's not like he got beaten up and kidnapped, right?
