Chapter 17 - Two new friends
Erza's POV
Last night was horrible. I tried not to; but I ended up crying myself to sleep. It was just such a terrible feeling in my stomach. You know that feeling? When someone breaks up with you because they think you kissed another guy when you actually didn't? Yeah, I had that kind of feeling.... because that's exactly what happened.
Ring ring, ring ring!
I groaned and left my phone to keep ringing. It stopped ringing for a bit before ringing again. I checked the caller ID to see it was Lucy. I unwillingly reached for my phone on my bedside table – which was really difficult – and pressed the answer button.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Erza! What are you doing right now?" Lucy replied.
"Umm, lying in bed" I answered.
"Seriously? Well, guess what? You're going to get your lazy ass up and get ready for school. There's something you should know... lots of people know what happened at school yesterday with you and Jellal."
"What? How?"
"Duh. You guys were standing at the front of the school" Lucy paused. "Erza, I'm really sorry about what happened. Just know that I'll always be there for you. But you should really come to school today."
".... Fine" I sighed.
"Thank you so much Erza. Now, get to up and ready for school" Lucy told me before hanging up.
I sighed and looked around my room until my gaze landed on the clock. Shoot! I'm going to be late for school. I jumped out of bed and got dressed in my uniform. Then I got some toast and stuffed it in my mouth as I ran out the door. Since there wouldn't be a bus to take me to school, I ran all the way there. Good exercise anyway.
When I arrived at school, I was just a few minutes late. After a quick stop at my locker, I sprinted to my classroom.
"Sorry I'm late" I apologised as I walked in.
The teacher just gave me a stern glare as a warning; thank the lord it wasn't a detention. I took a seat in my usual chair - that was surprisingly empty. The teacher continued talking about whatever he was saying before I got here, but I was only half listening. Something didn't seem right and when I looked around the room, I realised that Jellal wasn't here. Where could he be? Was he absent because of what happened yesterday?
"Erza, please pay attention. This is your last warning" the teacher scolded.
"Sorry, I'll pay attention" I blushed from embarrassment.
In the next class, I sat next to Lucy and asked her if she saw Jellal. She told me that she hadn't seen him today. I frowned. Knowing him, he would be at school no matter what (and even if it was just to sit at the back silently). Then I asked Ultear and Meredy but they said they hadn't seen him. I even asked Mystogan (his twin brother) but he just said Jellal would probably turn up soon.
At lunch however, I saw Jellal walk into the school when I was eating lunch with my friends. I quickly stood up and speed-walked over to him. I left my lunch there and ignored the questions I got from my friends. When I reached him, I realised that he didn't look well. His eyes were red and puffy; as if he had been crying.
"Jellal?" I asked uncertainly.
"Erza... there's something I have to tell you" Jellal said seriously.
I nodded and let him lead me to a quiet place behind the school. No one ever came here so I suspect Jellal wanted to talk about something private.
"I've got horrible news" he blurted out.
Horrible news? What could be so bad that got Jellal so worried?
"Go on" I nodded with a blank face.
"It's about Simon."
I froze when Jellal mentioned his name. How did I not notice it? It's strange how I didn't see Simon at school today as well. I gestured for Jellal to keep going.
"He was in an accident last night, one involving me. I was driving home when I turned a corner and it was a green light for me but I didn't see him walking across the road, I swear. When I was saw him, it was too late. I-I ran over Simon, I killed him. When the police came, they found out he was drunk" Jellal finished explaining and wiped a tear from his eye.
As Jellal told me what happened, I felt horror. I can't believe Jellal actually killed Simon and Simon's dead. I shook my head in denial.
"No. He's not dead. You must be lying" I denied.
"I'm really sorry Erza, I really am. It was an accident but he, he really is gone."
My body was quivering and I started crying for my ex-best friend. Simon didn't deserve to die, and he didn't even meet his long-lost sister*. I know I said I hated him but I take it back and I didn't mean I wanted this to happen. This was all my fault he got drunk and walked on the road to die.
"Erza, this isn't your fault. It's mine; I should have watched where I was driving, and trust me, I feel very guilty" Jellal said, as if reading my mind.
"Don't say that Jellal. It's not your fault either. Don't bash yourself up over this" I hugged him and we just sort of stood there in each other's arms and cried.
The end of lunch bell rang and we pulled apart.
"Jellal, what about Simon's friends? Do they know? Are you going to tell them?" I asked.
"I guess I'll have to tell them."
I nodded and he said bye before walking off to class. When he was gone, I wiped my eyes with my sleeves and sighed. There was this intense feeling in my heart when I was hugging Jellal. It took so much will not to kiss him there and then. If this keeps going on, I don't know how I can survive. I just love him and miss him so much.
On Saturday that week, I went to Simon's funeral. It totally wasn't a coincidence that it was raining and everything was dull. I noticed that Jellal was standing at the back of the funeral, probably not wanting to be seen since most people know he killed Simon. I wiped my tears away as Simon's long-lost sister and family said there speech. It was then my turn to say my speech. I got up and walked to the front of the room.
"My name is Erza Scarlet and I was best friends with Simon since grade 1. I know him really well, as if we were brother and sister, and I know that he did not deserve this death. He deserved a long life with a happy death. Simon was a sweet, caring, talented, smart and lovable guy. He had a family, friends and now a sister. As we mourn his death, I hope we can remember the good memories with him more than the bad ones. Thank you."
Everyone clapped and I sat back down. After another speech, people just walked around and talked with one another. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see a girl with long straight black hair and a fringe, with a white ribbon/headband that was tied in a bow at the top.
"Hi. Erza, right?" the girl asked me.
"Yep. You are?" I answered.
"I'm Kagura, Simon's long-lost sister."
"Really? Wow. It's so exciting to meet you. It must be hard to lose your brother after finding out about him. I'm very sorry" I hugged her and she hugged back.
"It's hard but I'm surviving. It's nice to meet one of his friends that were close to him. I feel like we're going to be best friends" Kagura smiled.
We started talking about the times with Simon and ourselves. Soon, we were best friends. Milliana, Wally and Sho came and we chatted about other things.
"I'm going to kill Jellal for killing my brother!" Kagura exclaimed angrily, after we got onto the topic of what happened last night.
"It wasn't Jellal's fault; it was an accident" I defended my boyfri- ex-boyfriend.
Kagura didn't know he used to be my boyfriend, only the other three knew.
"He could've been more careful! I hate him and I want revenge" Kagura fisted her hands.
"It's not all Jellal's fault, Simon was really drunk, and you shouldn't want revenge. I understand how you feel but you should be the better person and not get revenge" I told her.
"He was like a brother to you! How could you say that?"
"Because that's what Simon would want. He's a forgiving person" I said.
Kagura's eyes softened and she thought for a bit. She didn't say anything, just nodded her head and walked off to talk to the other people at the funeral. I hope she considers what I said and I hope I see her again.
Lucy, Natsu, Gray and I were at the club the next day and Jellal hadn't shown up. He was meant to come but I guess he probably wouldn't want to come because of me. I was wearing a red long sleeve mini dress that was sort of backless with a few criss-crossing strings on the back, red shoes and a silver necklace. I guess I have a thing for red dresses. Lucy bought a white and gold dress, white shoes and a gold necklace.
"You okay?" Lucy asked me.
"Yeah. Just thinking about Jellal" I replied.
Lucy bit her lip nervously. "He texted me that he wasn't feeling well enough to come today. I got the message this morning, I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
"Seriously? You should have told me. I got so worried and thought that he wouldn't come because of me - actually, I think he didn't come because of me" I sighed. "It's fine. Let's go to the dance floor."
She nodded and we started dancing on the dance floor. The two boys were somewhere on the other side of the club doing who-knows-what. We were dancing for a while, (with boys trying to flirt with us and us telling them to scram,) before we got thirsty. My head kind of hurt from the loud music and bright lights. It was also getting hot and sweaty with all those bodies dancing close together.
"Let's go to the bar!" I shouted to Lucy, since the music was really loud.
"I don't want a car!" Lucy shouted back confused.
"No, to the bar!" I replied.
"I don't think it's too far!" she yelled.
I gave up and just pointed to the bar. She nodded and we made our way to the bar, where it was quieter.
"Oh! The bar. You could have said so" Lucy said as she sat down on one of the chairs.
"I did say so" I muttered under my breath and sat down next to her.
We ordered some drink that had alcohol and guess what? Yep, we got drunk. Lucy then saw her boyfriend who was dancing with some girls so she went over to him, which left me by myself. I finished my glass in one big gulp and when I looked next to me, I saw a hot guy sitting next to me. He had blonde spiky hair and he was drinking as well.
"Hey babe, what's your name?" he asked me.
"Erza. What about you?" He's hot – I'll give him that, but Jellal will always be perfection in my eyes.
"I'm Sting" he smirked. "You got a boyfriend?"
"Ye- No" I corrected myself.
"Cool. We should hang out sometime."
"Sure."
"Wait a minute. Erza, Erza Scarlet. I recognise you from Fairy Tail High. I think you're on their website or something. I'm going their tomorrow until the end of the term."
"Oh, you must be from Sabertooth High" I said with realisation.
He started telling me about Sabertooth while I told him about Fairy Tail. In that short amount of time, we had become sort of close and I could now say that I made another friend. Then my head started hurting, because of the alcohol, so I held my head in my hands.
"Are you okay?" Sting asked.
"Yeah."
"If you want, I could take you home. I promise I won't do any funny stuff with you, I promise. I'll just drop you off."
Instead of replying, I just nodded my head. I trusted him a lot and hopefully, he wouldn't break my trust. He took my hand and led me to his car. I told him my address and we started driving, while music was faintly playing in the background.
"Thank you" I slurred.
"No problem. I know how getting drunk feels" Sting chuckled. "And I would do anything for a pretty girl."
I blushed. Soon, I started getting tired so I closed my eyes for a bit and blackness took over.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
That was so sad! I wanted to sort of include some stuff from the anime and turn it into high school stuff so I did (like Simon's death). Just so you know, I ship Jerza with my life, no hating on Sting (don't worry Sting, you'll find a girl)! Please vote, comment and follow! Thanks for reading!
