Chapter 10

I couldn't believe that right in front of me was my family. My brother and father had been here the entire time and I hadn't even begun to consider the idea that they didn't abandon me. Usually they told me when they were leaving. I had just assumed the very worst had happened.

I was very distracted by my family. I had almost forgotten the true danger which we were in. The familiar voice made me freeze. The voice was one I wouldn't be forgetting anytime soon. I looked to see the person who had tried to hurt me. I backed away slightly but found my back against the wall. Father and Kano moved closer in front of me.

"Garrett!" Turin clapped his hands and walked over to the man who didn't seem to be very impressed by him. "What a wonderful surprise." Turin sounded a little bit condescending and sarcastic. He rolled his eyes and then slid away from the man who I now know is called Garrett. "Please don't fill this with more family issues than there already will be."

Garrett's expression did not change as his eyes followed Turin's movements. His eyes then moved towards his daughter, they were as hard as steel. "I told you to stay away from the beach." He gave a sort of growl. "This entire thing is your fault." I turned my head to see Mele's reaction. She was still incredibly close to me, she was struggling slightly to keep herself up in the water.

"My fault?" she shrieked with the words. "Father, look at what you've done! You took the voice away from a beautiful creature for what? So that you could endlessly torture your daughter in hopes that she would be famous?" Rage was building up inside her, she shook and she seethed with all the pent up anger she held. She hadn't told me much about her life at home but I could see why.

"You were meant to be this!" Garrett shouted back, his voice becoming overwhelming in such a tight space. "You were meant to be successful and famous. To keep the family name running high and proud." He had his fist clenched and he kept moving his foot as though he wanted to storm over to us, pick Mele up and take her away.

"Actually, I was the one who did that." Turin raised his hand as though his presence wasn't enough. "I am one of the most powerful Aquayges you would ever come across. I can practically do anything I desire.'' He put emphasis on the word 'I'. The boasting caused me to roll my eyes. I doubted that a lot, I was not sure if I was correct but I was sure there were some things Aquayges couldn't do.

"The family name means nothing to me!" Mele shouted and splashed in the water slightly. I could see her own fist was clenched as her eyes were also dark. "You have taken something core to the existence of a Sirenneyet. I can't believe you would do anything like that!"

"They are monsters!" Garrett roared and stormed over to us. Mele moved closer to me protectively. "They're unnatural, they're freaks!" His tone became deeper and more dangerous. Seriousness and fury danced in the flame of his eyes. "They're killers." I looked towards my brother and father in question.

"We aren't killers!" My father said with a firm voice. "We do not kill any humans, the only ones who are killed under the sea are fish for food." Kano and I nodded. The fury in Garrett's eyes did not lessen. I was aware of how much Mele was shaking. I couldn't tell if it was from fear, coldness or anger but I wanted to comfort her. I wanted to wrap her in a warm hug.

"You expect me to believe you?" Garrett hissed. I turned my attention to Turin. Turin was much more powerful and dangerous to us right now then Garrett was. We would be able to move out of the way of weapons and other sharp things but magic was unpredictable. Sirenneyets don't have much knowledge on magic.

"What prompted you to think so?" Kano asked as I watched the Aquayge walking around the room, putting liquids inside bottles. He seemed to be enjoying this, judging by the small smirk on his face. We were all just in the middle of one big argument. I couldn't tell who the real enemy was here.

"Wouldn't you love to know?" Garrett sneezed and started to get closer to the pool. He was looking directly at Mele as he spoke.'Your mother was fascinated by the sea. She loved the sandy shores and the deep waters. That's why we live so close to the sea." His eyes darkened and he gritted his teeth. "Then she got too close to it. She drowned. She was a good swimmer, an excellent one. She would've been pulled beneath the waves."

I was speechless, no pun intended there. I could feel Mele freeze up beside me. She looked towards me and I couldn't help but look towards her as well. "They wouldn't do anything like that." Her words made a smile come to my face. She honestly thought that we wouldn't hurt anyone, despite what her father said. "Why would you do this though? That explains why you hate them but why would you go to a sea witch?"

"An Aquayge!" Turin exclaimed as he looked up from the book he was holding. "Sea witch makes us sound like a bunch of old ladies who collect moon water and dance around bonfires." He shuddered slightly before giving another rather sarcastic smile. "Though it's understandable coming from someone like you."

"Don't you think it's the perfect form of revenge?" Garrett tilted his head slightly, ignoring Turin's exclamation. "I would steal what makes them whole, what makes them powerful. Giving it to the one person who I care for the most. Who would then become great and successful."
