Chapter 1
I came out of my home rather slowly. I sighed slightly as I went towards my garden. I didn't have a lot in my garden but it was necessary for me to grow things. I wasn't good at growing things but I tried my best. It had been a few months since I was left on my own and told to fend for myself. I wasn't happy. It was something that I couldn't help, so why was everyone so judgemental?
It was something special for us. My entire family was singers, they sang and danced and were all happy. I couldn't join in any of that. I couldn't sing. Since I was a baby I didn't have the capabilities to make a vocal sound. At least when they were around, I had more resources. I looked around my small garden with a slight frown. I couldn't really grow many edibles, the most I got were a few flowers which naturally show up here and there. I couldn't take any responsibility for that.
I brushed some of my teal hair out of my face and decided to head down to the beach. It always calmed me. I know it sounded strange, someone like me liking the beach was rather odd. It was usually quiet and I could find a rather secluded spot just for myself.
It doesn't take me long to get to the beach. I was rather fast when I wanted to be. The sun wasn't too high in the sky but I could tell that it was going to be a rather warm day. It meant that there would be more people at the beach. I had to hurry, usually that meant I couldn't stay long. I didn't like it when it got too noisy and crowded.
After some time I went to my favourite spot on land. I liked to watch the waves and the sun reflect off the water in beautiful shimmers, I didn't get to see the water like this often, at least I didn't when I was younger. Father never let me visit the beach when I was young, he said I would end up injuring myself.
I sat on the rocks for a few moments. I watched the seagulls fly above my head in between the fluffy clouds. I watched the fish swimming under the water. They were the reason that not a lot of people decided to swim around here. It was probably for the best. They didn't know what else lived in the sea.
I sighed as my stomach rumbled slightly, I should've eaten before coming out here. I was just about to go for a swim in the water when I heard footsteps approaching. I panicked and dived into the deep waters. I don't think that I was quick enough as the footsteps stopped slightly. I was too scared to go back to the surface as I put my hand over my mouth out of habit and watched.
I saw a figure appear on the rocks. I could see dark hair and rather light clothes. I couldn't see much as the water's movement distorted what I could see. They seem to mimic my previous movements of sitting on the rocks and putting their feet into the water. They looked rather feminine from what I could see.
I could just about hear that they were talking. I looked around to see if there was anybody else with them but I couldn't see anyone in sight. Nobody would be able to hear her. I panicked slightly, fearing that I wasn't deep enough in the water. She might've been able to see me. I was sure she would be a lot more surprised and louder if she were able to see me.
It's not everyday you see a girl with teal hair and a tail. Well, it is for me because I found a mirror at the bottom of the sea one day and I decided to keep it in my room. Or I should really say my cave. I am what the humans call a siren, not too far off to what we're actually called. The reason that humans know this is because it was shortened by the humans as a way to remember it.That is just a rumour though.
We are originally and officially called Sirenneyets. Yes as in Siren-knights. We are often those who protect the sea. We take care of the ruler and ward off any humans which may pose a threat to the sea-life. We don't do the best job but we try our very best. Well, I did before I was abandoned. I'm still as salty as the sea. One morning I just woke up and found that everyone had left me.
We're rather easy to spot too, if humans looked a little closer then they would find us. A few have, that's where the tales of our kind stem from as I have said. We have tails, mine being a rather royal blue, gills and some other features which are different to humans. I don't see humans often enough to remember the differences.
Speaking of humans, there was still one above me. I moved slightly to the left. She was sitting on the edge of land which was under a cliff. I was able to move around the corner of the cliff and stick my head around. The top half of my body was still out of the water. I could see that she did, in fact, have black hair. I couldn't see her eyes or facial features as her hair was very long and acting as a curtain. I didn't know the proper terms for what she was wearing but I could see her tan arms and her tan legs.
From what I could see, she was stunning, the sun gleamed on her hair and she looked incredibly healthy. She was slightly muscular. She looked like she took good care of herself. I looked away after a moment of staring. I thought of these things about many humans before, though I never had the opportunity to stare at one for this long.
As she opened her mouth I nearly dived back. I had slightly pressed myself to the side of the cliff in shock. My webbed hand clutched the rock as I suddenly could not breathe. That voice. The voice was stunning, enchanting. That voice was...mine.
