Chapter Twelve
I turned around to get a better look at the ship that was attacking us. It was pretty big, made out of dark wood and painted in dark blue stripes. Its bow figure was a faceless woman who had a wolf's head as a hat. The flag and sail also had the woman's simbol on it. The whole appearance of it made me shiver.
"Vivi, who exactly are they?" I asked and she gulped before responding.
"They're Miss Blue July's pirate crew, the Blue Chain pirates, and belong to an organization that's destroying my home country. I don't know exactly much about them other than that they're very powerful." My eyebrows furrowed as I watched Zoro and Sanji beating them without even breaking a sweat.
"Are you sure?" I scoffed while she nodded.
"These must be the lower rank members, but her first mate, Mr. Blue Forest, has a devil fruit ability. He can control wood..." She sighed. "Miss Blue July is, well, special. Her main weapon are chains, covered in spikes and poison that makes you unable to move. She usually let's her victims live as a part of her crew. I only hope this is a ship of those people and she isn't on it. I really need to get to Alabasta, and fast!" Carroe chirped in agreement.
I watched as Sanji kicked the last few men unconscious and waved at us. "This must be all of them, but we'll check the inside anyway." They headed inside and me and Nami relaxed. Vivi still seemed tense like she wanted to say something.
"Come on, say it." I nudged her, but she only shook her head and smiled
"Oh, it's nothing. Probably just me being paranoid."
Usopp and Chopper walked out of the reindeer's office looking confused. "Who's paranoid? What happened?" Before we could answer Usopp, he realized there was an unknown ship next to us and shrieked. "What's that?!"
"Don't worry. We took care of it." Zoro smirked while he and Sanji were coming closer.
"Where were you anyways?" I asked. The boy showed me his bandaged fingers and gave out an awkward laugh.
"I got hurt while fixing the ship so..." He scratched his head and blushed in embarassement. I nodded and sighed in relief when Zoro destroyed the Blue Chain pirate's ship. We sailed away like nothing happened.
My heart was still beating fast in excitement even after an hour, and the hour after that. At the dinner, Zoro kept giving strange looks at my shaking hands, so after a few attempts at holding chopsticks, I gave up and settled by eating with my hands.
"Yah, kiddo!" He whisper-yelled. "What's up? You still scared?" He beamed in a manner that just screamed 'I told you so!'. I shook my head, then patted my cheeks to clear my mind.
"I'm not sure... I just can't shake off the feeling like the whole thing was too easy." I looked him in the eye. He lifted one eyebrow and scoffed.
"Oh, please! Those guys were just a bunch of weaklings, of course it was easy! I never thought I'd say it, but maybe even you could beat them."
"Exactly! Why would Vivi be scared of them? She said something about Mr. Blue-" Zoro stopped me from saying anything more by waving his hand in front of my face.
"Stop being such a scaredy cat. Let him come! I could beat the guy with my eyes closed!" He gulped down a whole barrel of sake and moaned in satisfaction. The door banged open and a red figure appeared in front of us, pointing an accusing finger at me.
"I thought you'd wake me up for dinner!" Luffy glared at the table, which now only had empty plates on it. I blinked at him and tried not to laugh, but I lost it when Nami ate the last chicken wing and licked her lips to taunt him.
"You were saying, captain?" She smirked and Luffy fumed in anger. Sanji on the other hand was gazing at Nami like she was the center of his world. Luffy began yelling at Nami, so Sanji kicked him in the face and the poor boy flew out of the door.
"How dare you insult Nami-san?! Go back to sleep!" He slammed the door in Luffy's face and started picking up the dishes to wash them. There were no more casualties after that, other than Luffy's constant bad mood. I wanted to cheer him up and have him smile again, but whenever I came close he turned around feeling betrayed. I kinda regretted laughing at him, but that was one of the reasons I came along anyway. To be happier. That's why I wouldn't let anyone or anything ruin my mood.
The sun had already set and many were heading to sleep. Only Luffy was still wide awake, because he had already slept through the afternoon. But that wasn't the only reason he was awake. I realized that when I saw him hiding behind a corner and waiting for Sanji to finally fall asleep. He must have really been hungry.
While he was hiding from Sanji and waiting to get food, I was behind another corner with Sugar, hiding from Luffy and waiting to catch him off guard. After fifteen minutes of waiting, Luffy finally snuck into the kitchen and I was close behind him. Sugar has long given up on waiting and was now in deep sleep, probably cuddling with the ship's doctor.
I was surprised when I saw that Sanji put a huge chain around the refrigerator to stop Luffy from stealing food. The said boy was now trying to remove it and I saw the perfect time to strike. I hid behind the table, then tiptoed to the counter and finally, I jumped out and pushed Luffy on the floor to stop him from escaping. He gasped when he saw me and groaned in pain when we hit the ground.
"What the hell, Candy?" He rubbed the lump which was forming on his head.
"I'm sorry I didn't wake you up, but I had a really good reason, okay?" I blabbed out fast. "And I know I shouldn't have laughed at you and I'm sorry about that too."
"Huh?"
"If you still can't forgive me I can bake you cupcakes!"
"Yah, Candy!" I shut up. "Are you stupid?! Why the hell should you ever apologize?! We're pirates, remember?" I opened my mouth to respond to that, but nothing came out. "But if you're at it, I would totally like some cupcakes." I scoffed and couldn't believe this idiot.
"You're an idiot." I stated, feeling baffled.
"Yeah, I know. Nami keeps calling me that. I don't get it tho..." He put a finger in his nose. Suddenly, I thought I heard someone sneeze. My muscles tensed up and I started scanning everything around me. It came from behind the table.
"Did you hear that?" I whispered so quietly, I barely even heard myself. Luffy shrugged and spoke in a normal tone, startling me.
"I dunno. It was probably just Usopp." My hands formed fists and I shook my head.
"No, it definitely came from this room. I'm not stupid." My voice trembled. I crawled along the counter and opened a cabinet. After putting a finger to my lips and signaling to Luffy that he should be quiet, I took out a big butcher knife. I had no intention on using it, but it made me feel safer.
My eyes scanned the room again and when I saw nothing unusual, I very slowly got up. I walked around step by step, not wanting to miss anything and after checking every little corner and hiding place I could think of three times, Luffy began feeling annoyed.
"C'mon, there's no one here! You already checked the place like a million times, it's not like they're invisible." I stopped in my place not moving an inch. Even Luffy shut up and everything was now so quiet, I could hear the waves crashing into our ship. This was too normal.
Suddenly, I realized something and shivers started spreading all over my body. I clenched the knife in my hand tighter and bit my lip. There was so much wood surrounding us. The walls, the floor, table, chairs, counters... Even the knife's handle was wooden.
"Candy, are you alright?" I put on a fake smile and put the knife behind my belt.
"Just perfect." I let out a fake chuckle. "Umm, I guess you're right. They can't be invisible." I emphasized the last word hoping my captain would catch on, but then I remembered he doesn't even know we were attacked. I gulped, now hoping I could get to the boy's room in time. "Luffy, you wouldn't mind if I went to sleep, right? I'm so sleepy." I pretended to yawn and stretched to make it more authentic.
"What about cupcakes?" I wanted to punch myself for not being more careful earlyer.
"Tomorrow? If I bake when I'm sleepy, I usually swich sugar and salt. You wouldn't want to eat salty cupcakes, right?"
"Actually-"
"Okay, thanks for understanding! Good night!" I quickly closed the door behind me, but could still hear Luffy's dissapointed voice.
"I totally wanted to try that..."
I ran to the door of boy's room and barged in. Zoro, Sanji and Usopp were all snoring, not an idea of what could happen. Without vocally warning them, I flipped their hammocks upside down, causing them to hit the floor. Usopp's eyes watered, Sanji wanted to yell at whoever did that and Zoro wanted to go back to sleep, but when they saw my terrified face, they all stood up and gave me their full attention.
"I know this may sound crazy, but I think... No, I'm sure Mr. Blue Forest's in the kitchen."
