The Movie Plot
So, first of all I think I should begin by jumping into the plot of the movie.
Emma. (2020) was directed by Autumn de Wilde, produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin and was based on the novel by Jane Austen of the same name.
Emma Woodhouse is a wealthy and beautiful young lady who has delights in matchmaking. After her previous governess, Miss Taylor marries Mr. Weston (a match set-up by Emma herself), Emma finds a new young companion called Harriet Smith whose parents are unknown. When she comes to know that Mr. Robert Martin, a farmer who works for Mr. George Knightley (a landowner who is the brother of Emma's sister's husband) has proposed to Harriet, she manipulates Harriet into rejecting the proposal. Instead, she encourages Harriet to be hopeful about reverend Elton, the local vicar believing he's in love with the girl despite Mr. Knightley's advise that their class difference would be detrimental on Harriet.
During Christmas on leaving the Westons after dinner, Emma is left to take the last carriage with Reverend Elton where he declares that he's in love with her and Emma, shocked, refuses him. After that, Elton leaves for some time and he returns married to Augusta Elton.
Around the same time, Frank Churchill (Mr. Weston's son from his first marriage) and Jane Fairfax (a niece of Miss Bates), one of Emma's acquaintances, who she is rather envious of. A ball is held in honour of Frank's return and Elton refuses to dance with Harriet, embarrassing her and to save her George dances with her. Later when Emma gets to dance with George, she finds herself attracted to him, despite her claims to immunity to any kind of romantic feelings for anybody. But Emma leaves the ball suddenly and George doesn't find a chance to talk to her. So, he follows her home. They are interrupted again when Frank brings Harriet to Emma after saving her from being attacked by gypsies. Harriet tells Emma that sha may have fallen in love again and Emma thinks that Harriet is talking about Frank. So, she insists on Frank's presence and George thinks that's because Emma was interested in Frank.
Even though Emma tries to spend time George, he ignores her and after an embarrassing incident with Miss Bates during a picnic, he chastises Emma for insulting a woman who happens to be lower class than her.
Afterwards, Frank's aunt dies and it is revealed that he was actually engaged to Jane. Emma thinks Harriet will be heartbroken again but when she tries to break this news to her, she says she was never interested in Frank Churchill but in George Knightley. Sensing Emma's disappointment, she realizes that Emma wanted George to herself. George Knightly later reveals to Emma that he wishes to marry her. She later mends her interfering behaviour and apologizes to Miss Bates and Robert Martin. Later Harriet reveals that she had accepted the marriage offer by Robert Martin. George agrees to move in with Emma because she worries about her father's health. In the end, Emma and George are married by Reverend Elton.
TL; DR: Emma, a beautiful and wealthy but equally nosy young lady who enjoys matchmaking, finds herself in a couple of messy situations including falling in love herself.
The Reason for Choosing
The reason for choosing this movie was my undying love for period dramas.
😂😂😂
No.
Heaven knows how many times I've tried reading Pride and Prejudice, just to give up in frustration even before making it halfway, because the book started to deliver exactly what it said on the cover. It's not that I have anything against Austen or period dramas but it's more of a personal preference.
Seeing the prompt, the first movie that I thought of was Love, Actually, actually. There were so many details I could change. But finding all the resources, especially the ten faceclaims was going to be hell. So, that idea had to go.
Love, Actually was probably the only rom-com I've ever watched. So, I started going through a list of "The 200 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time" on Rotten Tomatoes and I found this poster.
Anya Taylor-Joy was one of the easiest people to find pngs of on DeviantArt. So yes, convenience was the first reason I chose this movie. And I thought, why not watch it? Not gonna lie, I did enjoy it. Especially after Rupert Graves appeared on screen when I least expected him to. Totally did not watch the entire movie in one sitting just because he was in it. Nope.
The Thought Process Behind the "Evilification"
The dark version of Emma. (2020), aka my version, is a situation where Emma Woodhouse goes a little bit overboard with her matchmaking. Just a little bit 🤏. Although it may have started off with good intentions, it had ended in evil magic and quite a few murders.
When the original poster and my remake are put side by side, I think the path I've taken is pretty visible.
What I've mostly done is replacing the elements form the original poster with more sinister looking ones. For example, I replaced the house in the background with one that looks like a haunter house, the bushes with a pile of skulls, etc.
Of course, Emma's dress in my poster does not match the regency era clothing. I didn't face-swap Anna with a model wearing period typical clothing mostly because her pose was spot-on (and partly because I was too lazy to do that). And maybe the sight of the extra exposed skin could also be a sign that Emma had turned truly evil.
