𝟎𝟐 ─ QUITE THE ODDBALL

Being the brilliant mastermind that she is, Eve theorized that if she and Xavier were to immediately jump into their relationship it would raise too much suspicion.

Instead, they took their time to bond over the duration of a few weeks. The pair hardly knew anything about each other aside from the infamy that tainted both of their names.

Xavier and Eve faced each other while they sat at an otherwise empty lunch table, already noticing the way that their peers shot them confused glances and shared whispers amongst themselves.

"You seriously don't like olives?" Xavier speculated before he picked a green olive from her lunch plate and placed it in his mouth. "I mean, they're easily in the top three best pizza toppings—aside pepperoni and ham, of course."

"It appalls me that pineapple isn't in your top three," Eve said, raising one of her eyebrows.

Xavier shivered in disgust. "I can't believe you just said that."

"Oh, don't be so dramatic. I'd hate for our first fight to be over pineapples and olives," Eve shrugged her shoulders before taking a bite of her slice of pizza.

"This is relationship–ending material. I mean, how am I going to date someone who has such horrible taste?" Xavier joked.

Eve rolled her eyes. "Speaking of bad taste, when do you think we should announce our relationship?"

"Ouch," he smiled, tucking a strand of his hair behind his ear. "I don't know... maybe at the secret bonfire that the Scales are holding tonight."

"I didn't know they were hosting a bonfire?" Eve speculated.

"I think the key detail in that sentence was that it's secret," Xavier spoke with an amused tone as the corners of his lips tugged upwards. "Bianca caught me in the hallway and invited me. She said I could bring a plus one. I'm assuming she meant Ajax so this will definitely catch her off guard."

Eve nodded with a close–lipped smile. "Okay. Where should I meet you?"

"I'll wait for you here at around nine o'clock tonight," he shrugged, earning a nod from Eve.

Xavier stood up from the bench they sat on and brought the untouched apple on her lunch tray to his lips, taking a bite out of it.

"You're the worst," she spit while giving him a narrow–eyed look.

The boy smiled down at her before turning around on route to his destination. "I'll see you tonight, sweetheart."

As much as Eve protested, it was evident that he wouldn't be giving up on his cringe–worthy nicknames any time soon.

Eve dressed in a plaid red dress that cut off mid–thigh with black long sleeve underneath it before she left her dorm room for the party.

As promised, Eve found Xavier waiting for her at the lunch table they sat at earlier in the day.

He leaned against the table with his arms crossed over his chest. He wore a grey shirt that clung to his slender frame that he paired with black jeans.

A fashion monstrosity would be the way Eve immediately described it.

Xavier turned his head over to her and smiled. "Cute, but we're late."

"I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a hideous outfit, Xavier. This..." she motioned her hand along her outfit. "...Takes some time."

"Hm. I'm sure I'll get used to it after awhile," he said.

The two walked out into the woods until they saw a bright light in the distance — the bonfire.

Eve entwined her fingers with Xavier's as they entered the relatively large crowd of students. A smug smirk played over his lips after she incited their first public display of affection.

"I'll tell Ajax about us. I've seen him and Enid talking in class a few times; he'll be sure to tell her," Xavier whispered. Eve nodded.

Almost immediately, the two exchanged heated glances with Bianca and Kent from across the fire pit.

Ajax approached the pair with a smile on his face. "Hey, guys. Have you seen Enid?"

      "No," they both replied.

"I hope her freaky new roommate isn't holding her hostage or something. I heard that she murdered two kids at her old school and her parents covered it all up!" Ajax spilled with a high–pitched tone.

      "Who is it?" Xavier inquired.

"Wednesday Addams. You should check Enid's blog, she's been posting about how Wednesday attempted to bring a coffin into their room for 'decoration'..."

Eve's eyebrows furrowed. "Wednesday enrolled here?"

Xavier craned his head to look down at her. "You know her, too?"

"Yeah. Our dads do... business together," Eve smiled. "How do you know her?"

Xavier shrugged. "I met her at my godmother's funeral a long time ago. We played hide and seek and she saved me before I was almost cremated in her casket."

      "Yikes!" Ajax perked up.

Bianca crossed over to the group and tapped on Evette's shoulder. "Can I talk you?" she questioned with underlying anger in her voice. "Alone."

"Sure." Eve replied, sending Xavier a look that told him to carry out their discussed plan with Ajax. He silently replied with a subtle nod.

Bianca and Eve traveled outside of the huddle of students crowding around the fire.

"How kind of you to actually acknowledge my presence, Bianca," Eve remarked. "After forcing me to be an outcast, I would've assumed that you'd keep me there."

Bianca scoffed and ignored her comments. "Save it. What's going on between you and Xavier?"

"A relationship, Bianca. What else?" Eve's eyebrows pinched together in annoyance.

"You're dating?" the girl confusedly replied.

"That's what I said," Eve confirmed. "If you'll excuse me, I'm sure Xavier is wondering what's taking me so long."

"Don't be so sure," Bianca began. "He'll grow tired of you. He knows what's best for him."

"Are insinuating that you're what's best for him?" Eve laughed. "Just... leave it. He's moved on and I strongly advise you to do the same."

Eve stepped into the crowd of students and managed to find Xavier. He turned to face her and handed her a cold drink that he'd been holding on to for her.

"How'd it go?" he questioned, draping his lengthy arm around her shoulders.

"She's definitely not pleased," Eve replied before taking a sip from her cup. "The news of our relationship hardly even threw her off."

Xavier peeled his eyes way from the fire to look down at her. "Looks like we have a lot more convincing to do."

"You can say that again," Eve remarked.

Although they hadn't done much, the outcomes that they desired were already showing. People at the bonfire actually recognized Eve's presence for the first time in months, some even sparked up a conversation with her.

This was only their first appearance, after all. If only they'd had known what a wild ride their innocent plan would blossom into...

Eve managed to brush off the gossiping whispers that followed her after Enid Sinclair updated her gossip blog about the news of 'Xavier Thorpe and Evette Monroe's New Relationship' that Ajax supplied her.

She didn't mind it. In fact, she missed it. Eve was one of the most well–known people in the student body. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing was yet to be decided.

As she walked through the rain that poured over her white umbrella, she stopped and leaned against a brick wall to escape the wetness.

Suddenly, Wednesday Addams exited the infirmary with steady steps and pulled her black umbrella over her head.

Eve stepped forward in an attempt to make conversation with the new girl. She knew how ruthless Nevermore could be, and from what she had heard already, it hadn't been very kind to Wednesday.

As raindrops scattered her forehead, Eve looked above to find a gargoyle statue that was being pushed off of a ledge — moments from crushing Wednesday.

Eve rushed to her side and tackled the black–haired girl to the ground while the statue fell to the Earth and shattered into a million worthless pieces. Eve helped Wednesday to her feet and walked her back into the infirmary after noticing that she was slipping in and out of consciousness.

Wednesday laid back onto the nurse's bed and instinctively crossed her arms over her chest, just as one would do if they were laying in a coffin.

     How peculiar, Eve thought.

Within a few minutes, Wednesday's dark eyes snapped open and were locked into the girl who stood above her.

      "Hi," Eve sheepishly said.

The Addams girl sat up with one swift motion, provoking Eve to sit on the bedside chair.

"Last thing I remember, I was walking outside feeling a mixture of rage, pity, and self–disgust. I've never felt that way before," Wednesday spoke in a leveled tone, her voice never wavered a single time. "I looked up and I saw that gargoyle coming down at me and I thought..."

"....What an imaginative way to die?" Eve hesitantly finished the girl's sentence.

Wednesday picked up her spaced–out gaze from the floor and brought it to Eve's eyes. "Precisely. Yet, you tackled me out of the way. Why?"

"I couldn't just stand there and watch," Eve shrugged.

"I didn't want to be rescued. I would've rather saved myself," Wednesday spoke.

"Seems like you haven't changed much after all these years," Eve said through a halfhearted smile.

Wednesday's eyebrows pinched together for a moment before a lightbulb went off in her head. "Evette Monroe. You're the daughter of one of my father's intolerable colleagues. I used the width of your neck to carve a hole into the wooden board of the first electronic guillotine I ever made."

      "Yeah, I remember," Eve laughed.

"Without you, I never would've made that advancement at such a young age." Wednesday continued to speak without a single drop of emotion in her voice. Eve was equally as freaked out as she was intrigued.

Eve smiled with a light shrug. "Well, I guess you owe me," she spoke before she stood up and pulled her raincoat over her shoulders. "Do me a favor and ice that bump on your head, Addams."

Wednesday watched from her position on the bed as Eve exited the infirmary and into the pouring rain.

"Quite the oddball, that girl," Wednesday internally spoke to herself.

As Eve finally made her way back to Ophelia Hall, she picked her phone out of her pocket when it buzzed with a text message:

Xavier: I don't know if you've heard, but the Harvest Festival is next week and we definitely need to go. I heard Feastie's Fondue Apples are going to be there and I need to buy as many as I can.

Eve: We'll definitely be going. I'll send you my vision for your outfit within the next few days. We will not be having a repeat of last time.

Xavier: Ouch, snookums, I thought you liked my fashion sense.

Eve: I'm near vomiting. Stick to calling me sweetheart.

Xavier: Lol. I knew you liked my nickname.

      Eve: ...Good night, Xavier.
