Chapter 11
I looked down at the dish in front of me then licked my lips. This is the first time I've ever been eager to eat spaghetti, but it wasn't just regular spaghetti, It's Carbonara.
"I guess you approve." I lift my eyes off the plate and looked at Andre who was hovering over me.
I smiled, "It looks delicious!"
He smirks then looked down at the dish, "Taste it."
"Okay, but you to stop hovering over me, first. I don't like people watching me eat."
He shrugged but moved away to sit at the seat in front of me. He rests his hands on his knees, "I love watching you eat. It's a wonderful sight."
I raised my eyebrows at him, what could be wonderful about seeing someone stuff their face.
He smiled, "Correction, I love watching you eat the food I cook."
"Well, of course, you watch, you want to know if the poison worked," I said with a smirk. It's always fun to make fun of Andrea's cooking since his reactions were priceless.
"And yet after eighteen years, I'm still waiting for the poison to work."
I rolled my eyes at his comeback, "You can't get rid of me so easy."
He gave me a look I couldn't quite explain, "Who said the poison was to kill you?"
I didn't understand what he meant so I rolled my eyes, "Can I eat my Carbonara now?"
"Si', vai avanti." he replied. Ever since he found out I spoke his mother tongue he hasn't stopped speaking Italian, not that I mind since he sounded so sexy.
I took up the handle of the fork then twist some of the spaghetti around it then lift it to my mouth. I moaned as soon as it touched my tongue. I could taste the cheese and seasonings and it tasted amazing. As I slowly chew I lift my head to look at Andrea who was smiling. For the past week, Andrea has been staying home since he didn't want any more of those fake contractions happening again. He wanted to be there every step of the way. He no longer allows me to do anything except shower, eat and watch tv. Everything else he does himself. He was treating me like an egg, not I mine being pampered. I loved it, especially since he was just a good cook. I swear I've gained at least five extra pounds since the first lasagne.
I felt a sudden kick so I looked down at my tummy and smile. "She's kicking isn't she?" I nodded my head at Andrea without looking at him. It's always a precious sight to see when she kicks, it wasn't the best feeling but it showed she's healthy.
Andrea quickly stood from his seat and came in front of me. He moved the chair away from the table with eased then bent in front me. He looked down at my moving stomach in awe.
"Ehi, tesoro." he spoke in Italian to my stomach. This was something he did every time she kicked and every time he did it my heart would just feel weird. "Stai bene li' dentro?" he paused as if he was waiting for her to respond then he added. "Papà ti ama," even though he's whispered his love to our unborn child so many times I still couldn't shake the feeling in my heart. Why couldn't our marriage be a real one? Why couldn't he love me just as much as he love our baby?
Understanding her papa, she kicked causing Andrea to laugh. She knew him and whenever he spoke to her she went crazy. The bond between them was strong, imagine when she arrives.
Andrea turned into my eyes as he gave me a genuinely happy smile. He stared at me in an odd way, I couldn't tell exactly what he was thinking. He slowly lifts himself a little off the ground and was kneeling. His face was so close I could feel his breath against my skin.
With his beautiful chocolate eyes staring at me intensely I was drawn to move closer and so I took. It didn't take a second before his lips gave over mine, giving me a slow soft kiss then he pulled away still looking in each other's eyes. Even though the kiss was short it was different from all the other kisses that we shared. It's wasn't rough or passionate but it was perfect and by far the most meaningful kiss we've ever shared.
Even after we broke the kiss, I still couldn't remove my eyes from his. My heart was beating a mile a minute , literally. I felt a striking pain so I broke contact and look down at my stomach.
"What's wrong?" Andrea wit concern laced in his voice.
I rest my hands on my tummy, "It's a contraction. I think the baby is coming." I took a deep breath then look at Andrea. "What do your books say we should do?" Every day Andrea has a new book about baby and pregnancy reading so I knew he was more prepared than I was.
He looked at me calmly, "I don't think that's the baby. She's not ready to come out. You're just having a contraction."
I looked and rolled my eyes, I took a deep breath before answering, "I don't think it's a regular contraction. I think she's coming I can feel it." This was the first time during the pregnancy I've felt so much pain so I knew she must be ready to come out.
Andrea smiled, "Just because you're on the edge." he slowly stood up from the ground and stood in front of me. He held his hands out which I gladly accept then used his strength to stand. I looked at how calm he was about all of this and it was driving me crazy, "How can you e so calm? The baby is coming for Christ sake!"
He shrugged, "I've read enough to know that this is just a contraction."
I ignored his comment then start looking around the apartment looking for something when I didn't find it I looked at Andrea, "I didn't pack an emergency bag. I totally forgot."
"Don't worry, I packed one," Andrea said which caused me to look at him with curiosity. when did he create an emergency bag and how didn't I see when he was doing it? "The book said that the baby can come at any time so we have to be prepared."
I frowned, "But you don't believe she's coming."
He shrugged, "She's not."
"Is it because my water didn't break?"
He shrugged, "Twenty per cent of people water break first and then they feel pain, you felt a contraction."
I rolled my eyes, "Just go for the bag. I can tell she wants to come out." Andrea quickly exit the living room and went in the direction of his office. He was back in less than a minute with a duffle bags strapped on his shoulders.
"Let's go get our baby out of you."
I looked at him with a smirk, "Changing your word?"
"Nope. Just letting you win this time." I looked at him and rolled my eyes. How could I be wrong about this? I'm the one who had the contraction.
........
"What are you saying?" I asked Dr. Curtain in a trembling voice.
"Mrs. Moretti, I'm saying you're not ready to have the baby. You still have two weeks left in your pregnancy."
I frowned up at the older lady not understanding her fully, "But..but..I had a contraction.":
She nodded her head and smiled, "A contraction that lasts less than ten seconds. It's normally for persons at your stage of pregnancy."
I looked into her green eyes, "So you're saying I won't be having a baby today?"
She nodded, "Yes, it was false labour."
Andrea spoke from the chair beside me, "I don't want to be the one that says 'I told you so,' but I told you so."
I rolled my eyes his comment and look up at the doctor, "So I might have more of these contractions?"
She nodded and smile, "Yes, Mrs Moretti you will but you shouldn't get too hyped up about them, believe you'll know when the baby is coming that contraction will be so different from the rest. "
I gave her a small smile, "Okay, Dr. Curtain. I won't get too hyped up about the contractions."
And of course, the doctor's words came to a deaf ear because for the next week for every sight pain or contraction Andrea and I rush to the hospital and just like the very first time Dr Curtain told us that it was false labour and the baby still had a little more time. Drying the week, I become so frustrated of all the false labours that I finally gave up. Dr. Curtain was tired of seeing me every two days and Andrea was probably tired of driving me around. So I went to bed with a few contractions tonight I ignored it because I didn't want to run to the hospital for a next false alarm.
Around two am I felt a striking pain which caused me to wake up almost immediately, so did Andrea. I rest my head on the headboard and took a deep breath.
He frowned at me, "Are you okay?"
I nod, "Yea, just another contraction."
He quickly jumped from the bed, "She's coming."
I looked at him with raised eyebrows and a frown, "Who's coming?"
He laughed and shook his head, "The baby, she's finally coming."
I tried to laugh but a next contraction took over when it calmed down I looked at Andrea, "It's just another false labour. You should go back to bed, I'll be fine."
Andrea shook his head, "Trust me, amore, she's coming today."
I rolled my eyes, "I thought the same thing too, seven times this week but.." I stopped talking and let out a small scream at I felt intense pain below my abdomen, I lift my head up at Andrea. "I guess you're right, she's coming."
