It was getting a bit chilly, with the breeze getting colder everytime the sky loses each tiny pieces of its brightness every passing minute while Taehyung sat on a sidewalk bench under a tree, watching the busy street.
The movie they watched, it was boring. The storyline was simple with some cliche scenes, complete opposite of his taste. The popcorn they bought was too salty, and his cold drink spilled on the floor accidentally before he could take a sip.
As if it's not enough with all those things happened, the day keeps getting worse with his slippers broken while taking a walk together after the movie. And that's how he ended up sitting by the roadside, waiting for Jungkook who went to get a new slipper for him.
It was a bad day, it wasn't the best date, but everytime he looked at Jungkook, he looked happy and excited to just sit next to his girlfriend, to hold his girlfriend's hand during the movie, to gently peck the back of his girlfriend's hand everytime there was a cliche romantic scene on the big screen in front of them.
That was when Taehyung realized, maybe nothing matters when you're with someone you love, whether it's a worst day or a bad day, as long as you enjoy being with them. And somehow, that realization caused a pang in his heart but he didn't know what that pain means.
"Sshh!!"
He flinched when he suddenly felt a warmth on his face only to find Jungkook holding out a warm coffee cup on his hand when he turned.
"For you. It's getting a bit chilly so I bought you this. Don't spill it this time."
"Thanks," Taehyung took the cup while Jungkook crouched down, took out a pair of slipper from the bag and kept them in front on his feet.
Taehyung chuckled at the gesture, not because he was flustered or anything but he find it funny since there was a scene where the main leads in the movie they just watched did the same thing-such a cliche scene for a typical romantic movie.
He sure did find it boring when he watched that scene a while back inside the theater but he doesn't complain now, instead, the smile never left him and it kept widening even more till his cheeks exhausted when Jungkook held his hand as they walked back home.
Guess it wasn't all a bad day afterall.
Or... maybe he guessed it too early? Because what do you mean there's no electricity when they get back home? He would've stumbled on the floor while trying to go to the bedroom in the dark if not for Jungkook holding him back.
"Are you alright? Come, sit here. Careful, okay?" Jungkook slowly made Taehyung sit on the bed. "Sorry, I knew it'll be cut out today but couldn't pay the electricity bill. I haven't gotten my salary yet so I don't have enough money to pay."
Taehyung let out a long sigh, hand on his forehead. "Then why did you just spend so much on the movie? You could've paid the bills with that money instead of wasting it on a boring movie."
And yeah, he instantly regretted what he just said. He didn't mean to say it, but it's really true when one says once spoken words can't be returned, because eventhough the only thing that kept the room from darkness was his phone flashlight, he could clearly see how hurt Jungkook's eyes looked at that moment.
"Jungkook, I-"
"I saved up that money from my salary just to go on a date with you," Jungkook crouched down, which made Taehyung cut his own words off midway. "I'll never use that to pay for something I can live without. But I'm ready to use every penny I have if it takes me for a smile from you. I just... I just wanted to make you happy being with me."
Taehyung expected Jungkook to either breakdown or get angry at him. But it never occurred to him that, instead of doing either of them, Jungkook would take his hand, pat on it gently, and speak to him in such a calm voice. And that made him feel even more pathetic.
"And... I'm sorry if the movie was boring. I thought you would like that kind of movie since you enjoyed the movie we watched last time. I should've let you choose something you would like. But... I never felt like I was wasting my money at all, I'm happy I got to spend it for you even if you don't like it."
"No... wait, I'm sorry, okay? I just... I enjoyed today. I really did. I-"
He don't even know what to say anymore to make up for what he said to Jungkook other than looking at him with a penitent expression.
To be honest, Jungkook is way too better than him because if it was him in Jungkook's place and if his girlfriend said what he just did, he would've already dumped her. Because who wouldn't be hurt if you're already so broke to even pay for your bills but save every penny up just to spend for your girlfriend to make her happy but she finds it boring? Anyone would've lost it.
But look at Jungkook, he's still in front of him, trying to be calm and gentle to him even after being hurt, he didn't even raise his voice.
"It's alright. You must be tired. Just get some sleep. And for the bills, I'm gonna ask Manager-nim to give my salary earlier and pay it by tomorrow. So don't worry."
"No... I- you don't have to do that. Really. You can pay it later when you have money. I'm so sorry."
Taehyung grabbed Jungkook's hand quickly when he stood up. He felt so ashamed for what he did but Jungkook just chuckled as he sat down on the bed next to him.
"Hey, it's okay, you don't have to say sorry for that. For the bills, it's already necessary to pay for it now or the other day. And Manager-nim is a good person. He always give my salary earlier if I need urgent money so it's not a problem." Jungkook explained while patting Taehyung's head who just sat there silently, probably trying to hide his shame in the silence.
But isn't it cruel of him? Instead of feeling bad for Jungkook, instead of feeling guilty and apologising for his mistake when he almost ruined their relationship with a single word, he's here being soothed by the mere gentle pats on his head.
Just what did Taeun do for Jungkook to be this soft towards her? How was she? Was she really sweet and kind to make Jungkook this way? How did she treat Jungkook before he came? How was their relationship before? Or does Jungkook always act like this to everyone? What made him to be this gentle to Taeun?
So many questions popped up on his head, and suddenly, he really wanted to know Taeun's story, because it is the only way to find the answers of his questions.
Those questions still rang on his head like a never ending bell even on the next day. And the desire for him to know about Taeun never left, instead, it kept increasing while he kept getting more impatient. But he has no idea what to do except for going to Yongdu-dong.
That's when he realized he didn't bring what the grim reaper asked for from the store, Tteokbokki. Yeah, he completely forgot about that. If only he did what was asked to do, the grim reaper would've helped him.
"Ugh!! I should've gave him his Tteokbokki first. How could I even forget that? I'm so stupid," he slapped his own forehead.
"Do you know if you keep saying you're stupid, you would actually become a real stupid?"
Taehyung jolted, startled at the sudden voice he heard, and obviously, Lee Dong Wook was sitting on the chair when he turned.
He don't think he'll ever get used to the 'sudden pop-up out of nowhere' behavior of these grim reapers.
"Well? Where's my Tteokbokki?"
Taehyung readily got down on his knees, hands folding to the grim reaper, "I'm really, really sorry about yesterday. I know I couldn't give you what you wanted, I'm sorry I forgot about that, it just slipped from my mind when I went with Jungkook. But please, I would do anything you asks if you'll help me. I'm serious."
The grim reaper smiled when he saw the desperation in Taehyung's eyes. "Hmm... I would still love to eat Tteokbokki too but I think I already got what I wanted from you."
"Huh?"
"Hmm... I guess you're right, you're stupid as you said," the grim reaper crossed his legs, "because if you were smart enough, you would already realize I sent you to that store to let you know Jungkook is working there and I wanted you two to meet there."
"What does meeting Jungkook had to do anything with this?" Taehyung frowned, well, he actually never realized that until the grim reaper stated it.
"I wanted you to spend some time with him and you did. See? I already got what I wanted."
Taehyung scorned, "what? I thought you were going to help me but you just made me simply spend time with him?"
Lee Dong Wook chuckled, bending backwards a bit to rest his back on the chair, "there's one thing you gotta do-to live as Taeun for the remaining 2 years of her life. And to live as Taeun, you needed to know her past story to understand how she lived her life, but for you to live her remaining 2 years, you need to continue doing what was on her fate to complete the deeds to be done in her life, and all of it includes Jungkook in it, so obviously you need him to live as Taeun. I just helped you out a bit so you can get to know him more. And yeah, I hope you don't forget why you're doing all this and what you'll get in return."
Taehyung sighed, of course he never forget what he'll get in return by doing all that, but it's not a simple thing to do, it was never simple from the start. Don't know why he ended up this way. Did he do something bad in his past life? Is that why he had to go through all this? He thought he was living a peaceful life, he actually was, until all these happened and now he's stuck in a stranger's body and got entangled with her life just to free himself from his punishment.
"But... but how will I know what is on her fate? How am I gonna do them if I don't know any?"
The grim reaper smiled, "that's why you need to know her past first. Only after you know it, only after you understand her life, I'll help you figure out what's on her fate and what you have to do."
That made Taehyung to feel a little relaxed yet anxious at the same time-relaxed that the grim reaper is finally gonna help him but anxious at the thought of how he's gonna find out her past and what is on her fate.
"Yongdu-dong-" the grim reaper continued after noticing the frown on Taehyung's face and the mention of the place made the other to lift his head quickly, "it's not her birth place but that place holds a special connection with her. I won't stop you if you want to go there and look for her past. But before that," he took the photo frame which was on the table, "this photograph-"
"That's Taeun with her parents, right?" Taehyung interrupted, he already assumed it but he wanted to confirm it but Lee Dong Wook just smiled as he handed the frame to him.
"Where did you get that from?"
"I... I found it from her bag. Why? Did I guess it right?"
"Hmm, did you find anything else from that bag?"
Taehyung frowned again, "No, there was only her clothes it it. But it was locked but I managed to open it. Why? And you haven't answer my question yet." He was getting impatient but the grim reaper chuckled while looking at the picture.
"This photograph... check it again carefully. And the bag where you found them. You'll find something there. That's all I can help you for now. You have to do the rest by yourself."
And before Taehyung could say anything, the grim reaper vanished from his eyes again without a warning while he stared at the empty room with the frame on his hand.
"He didn't even answer my question," he sulked, looking back at the photograph and tracing his fingers gently over it.
"But what did he mean when he said I'll find something from this photo- oh shi-!!" he almost cursed himself when the back board of the frame accidentally fell off.
"Oh my! I'm sorry, Taeun. I didn't mean to do it. I'll fix it right back, don't worry," mumbling by himself while trying to fix the frame, the photograph, as if the back board fell off for a reason, as if it fell so it could show him something, he saw a handwritten note on the back of the picture.
"Taeun-ah, our lovely daughter, you have to live well. Be happy. Eomma and Appa loves you."
And that note made it clear that the two people in the picture is definitely Taeun's parents.
"Songjeong-dong?" He read the address that was written at the bottom of the picture.
He's sure it's not the place where the picture was taken because there's no such amusement park in Songjeong-dong.
But looking at the way it was written, as if the one who wrote it wanted it to be noticed, one thing is sure that this must be what the grim reaper was trying to say when he said about finding something from the photo.
He sprung up to stand straight when something crossed his mind-
"It definitely must be where her parents live."
