Nightmare 21: Republic
Recap:
He laced his arm around you and walked down the sidewalk with ease. Everyone else on the street gave you glances of satisfaction and happiness as they walked in the opposite direction with their umbrellas raised. They zoomed by like wind in a sunny forest.
The rain hit your head like bullets. It felt like little needles were poking into your skull and shoulders, grinding back and forth on your soul.
It's funny because it wasn't raining yet; there were only dark clouds forming.

You and Jeff walked through the forest on the blanket of dirt that was infested by roots crawling out of the ground.
You followed a path leading to a cemetery. The closer you got, the more dead the flowers seemed. Their pedals started to fall off and get sucked into the bottomless hole of earth. The thornes on the roses appeared to curve inwards more and more and become sharper every step you took.
"I wonder where we can stay tonight," you sighed.
"I just wanna find a place where we can be alone together. Some place where we can hide from that girl and the doctor," Jeff replied.
"I'm kind of sick of running and hiding," you mentioned to him. "But it's the only way to stay safe right now."
"Right," he sighed. "I think we need to stay away from them until we have the bigger guns."
You looked down. "We have the bigger guns," you muttered. "We just don't know how to use them."
Jeff laughed and nuzzled your shoulder closer to his side as you smiled.
"We've been walking for a while," he started. "Do you wanna stop for a bit?"
"Sure," you said. "I think I see a graveyard up there. Maybe there will be a seat."
After another minute or so, you stepped onto the burial ground. There wasn't any fog, but the missing sun seemed to cast an eerie feeling over the tombs. It didn't help that there wasn't a single person there other than you and Jeff.
"Well, this is kinda creepy," he laughed.
You smiled and nodded at him. He took your hand and led you over to a long bench bordered by a coiled metal. The wood crinkled as you sat down.
"What's that tombstone say?" you asked, pointing over to a tall cross perched on the top of the hill. You couldn't see that well.
"I think it's blank," Jeff said. "Maybe we're facing the wrong side."
"But that one's facing us," you mumbled as you moved your finger in a different direction.
Jeff's face turned to stone and almost matched the stillness of the graves.
"Are you okay?" you asked.
"That..." his voice trailed off. "What does that say?"
He stood up and let go of your hand. He stumbled over to the grave you had been pointing at and widened his eyes.
You followed him and kneeled down.
'Liu Woods.'
"That's an interesting name," you said.
Jeff didn't take his eyes off the writing.
You then looked down at the rest of the etched-in words.
'A loving and caring brother.'
Below the standard font was an extra line that appeared as if it had been scraped in with a rock.
'You deserved this.'
Those words had horizontal lines running through them. Perhaps the person who wrote it realized their wrongdoing. Either that or someone else fixed the terrible mistake.
"I know that name," Jeff finally spit out.
"Really?" you asked. "Do you know who he is?"
He hesitated, but shook is head.
A large bang sounded from behind and echoed off the bench to reach and twist into your ears.
You jolted up and spun your body to see what made the sound. Jeff followed and you were both immediately faced with the never-ending nightmare that kept finding its way back into your life.
"How did I know I'd find you here?" the doctor mocked through his mask. "Don't mind me. I have a slight cold today and just wanted to get a good view of the main bait."
"Is there something you need with me?" you asked.
"Well," Smiley chuckled. "I'm still trying to find the time to give you your last chance."
Jeff's fingers brushed yours slowly and tickled your palm.
"What's been holding you up then?" you questioned, getting ready to take off.
"I actually came to inform you that I've changed sides," Smiley smirked. "See, (y/n)... You're just not fun."
Your soul started to growl.
"I used to think better of you," he ran on. "But now you've turned into an idiot."
His deep voice was eating at your lungs.
He finished with, "Blair and I have made a agreement."
Jeff's fingers were then between yours. He started to say, "Get a-"
"What is it?" you cut him off, staring straight at the villain. "What's the agreement?"
Smiley's cheeks rose.
"You kill Jeff, and we kill you," he said.
You screamed on the inside and literally felt your blood blowing up and exploding inside of your feeble veins. All of the sorrow and sadness you had accumulated was evolving into anger. Your head was so cut clear that you debated tackling Smiley right then and there. You had enough of the stupid games you were forced into, and you were ready to end them with your own voice.
"I'm not doing this anymore!" you yelled. "I'm not running and I'm not hiding anymore!"
You could tell the doctor had a grin of satisfaction as he had gotten out of you exactly what he desired: Your breaking point.
"I'm so done with all of this stupid shit that you people are putting me through!" you screamed. "None of this is my fault!"
"It is," Jeff muttered, eyes stuck on the floor.
You stopped breathing for a moment and glanced over at him.
"You..."
He turned his head away. "I think you were the one that killed him."
You stepped away from his hoarse voice and trailed your hand back. The feelings inside of you were mixing all together in some sort of blur.
"Someone I knew is dead because of you," Jeff said. "I think this is your fault."
You snapped your head back at Smiley and took a couple stomps forward.
"What the hell did you do to him?!" you shouted.
You heard a gasping noise come from the side.
Spinning to get a full view of Jeff, you saw someone else standing behind him. He reached forward as if to grab your hand, but his eyes were rolling away. A couple drops of maroon fell onto the wet, foggy, green grass.
The scowl behind the smile plastered to Blair's face was sinister.
