005 • little miss fear
October, 1978
Juliet Lupin was not herself, not in defence against the dark arts. Normally in her favourite class she would sit near the front but now she hid in a far corner where Evan and Regulus sat, Felix following her. She moved in her seat every time their Professor Campbell came towards their direction, she shuffled and avoided eye contact, speaking and questions. Juliet had once loved this lesson, and on the very first week of October she wanted to run far far away.
The tables and chairs had been shoved aside in the room, she stood in the doorway with Felix. They could only assume it was a practical lesson, and seeing the cabinet centre of room she only wanted to throw up. Juliet had avoided approaching this in third year when they first introduced bogarts to class, she didn't want to know her fear and she did not want to be unable to cope.
But, Juliet was not a lucky girl, Felix pulled her into the class room, as the other students arrived.
"For anyone who paid attention yesterday, you'll be aware we are focusing on fear. It's important to know what we fear in order to ensure people cannot use this against us. I understand this has been covered before, but Dumbledore has asked to approach this topic again for everyone who may have not been well that day or may not remember the lesson."
Juliet took a small shuffle back when Ronan's eyes found hers; she wondered how different her life could have been if someone had noticed her like she did Rory. A hand touched her upper back, causing her to flinch. She glanced back to see Regulus stopping her step further closer to him. He hated touching her but he supposed he hand pushing her away was better then her back touching his chest. Juliet looked down at the floor, shuffling a way slightly. Felix looked at her, a bizarre look in his face. He silently signaled to her but she simply smiled. There are some secrets that shouldn't be secret and Juliet wondered if this was hers.
"...and say ridiculous."
Juliet wasn't to sure when she had lined up, or when Ronan Campbell had finished talking, all she knew is she was awfully close to the front of the line. Juliet did not want to know her fear. She did not want to remember her past. Felix spoke quietly to her as she stared ahead, a nasty taste in her throat.
It didn't take to long for clowns, spiders and so on and so forth to pass until Juliet was at the front. She closed her eyes, awfully aware of the gap behind her between her and Felix. She knew he stood back as if it would help her — if only he knew she felt more and more anxious.
Ronan met her eyes, a nasty smile on his face. She wanted to cower; but Juliet could not let that happen, she looked past him, straightened her spine and relaxed her shoulders. She's totally got this!
His fingers wrap around the handle as he slowly opens the cabinet. She wants to run, scream and hide. Juliet is not to sure what she would see; she hadn't thought about her fears all to much. She tried not to be so negative like she had every time she came into this class room. The bogarts form transformed; Juliet's life had always been painted with a tormented soul, and she had not quite expected to see what she did.
In its grey and hideous form stood a strange mixture between the two wolves she had seen in her life. The uneasy form of her brother and the frightening form of their childhood attacker, both in their wolf form. She froze. Juliet had not really thought about her brother as a fear — she loved Remus? Even if he had accidentally hurt her several times as a child. But Greyback's nasty face seemed to win creeping closer as she began to shake, her skin paling. Juliet swore the scars on her body began to ache.
Juliet wasn't sure when the professor had positioned himself behind her, using his hand to bring her arm up, point her wand out. He spoke in her ear but Juliet did not respond. Her heart beat quicker. He's touching her! She couldn't think, it was getting closer and he's touching her.
Juliet thought Hogwarts was supposed to be safe. "Get off me." She says it so quietly, with so little breath she can only doubt he didn't hear as he repeats ridiculous in her ear, it makes her shiver. She manages to utter the word, the wolf shrinking to the size of Remus' earlier form with a squeaky toy in its mouth.
Juliet rips herself out of his touch. A burning rage in her body as she points her wand into his chest, seething as she pokes him. "You do not touch me, I have not expressed my consent, do not ever touch me, or anyone, with out permission." She's stepping closer to him, looking up with her angry eyes. Her hands in fists at her side, shaking as she brings her wand away from him. "Do. Not. Touch. Me." She repeats, slower and more aggressive, before turning her back once again, before walking to the back of the class.
Juliet catches the small glance from Regulus and Evan who had managed to weasel themselves to the utmost back of the line. She assumes their fears were more rational and more real than the other students.
Unfortunately for Juliet, her little scene had caused her a detention for the following night, something she deeply regretted. Luckily, she had managed to get her way and have detention with Slughorn, who already had another student to attend. And luckily for her, that student had been Evan. Slughorn had left the two to clean the cauldrons and tools used in a previous class.
Evan watches Juliet, she's a lot less tense now, humming her muggle songs under her breath as she cleans, she's smiling, her shoulders are relaxed. But he is confused. "What happened?"
Juliet glances up at her best friend; a boy who shouldn't like her. She pulls her brows together, the smile on her lips wavering ever so slightly. "Pardon?"
"Defence, what happened? You've never been that aggressive before, Juliet."
"A young girl got raped recently I'm just on edge."
Evan doesn't believe her. He watches as she quickly turns back to her cauldron, humming her songs to herself. "You can talk to me, I know we're not supposed to be friends, Juliet you're the only person I've ever genuinely respected this much. You don't have to be alone."
"Evan, it's ok. I'm on edge, the world outside and what happened to the young girl. I'm sure there's more than just her. It's awful Evan, how can I be so kind to a world so hateful."
Juliet does not normally get detention. So after deep cleaning the cauldrons, she rushes from one side of the dungeons to the other finding Regulus on the way. She taps her wand against her sleeves in the process, muttering a few worlds to remove any stains and feel fresh again. "Sorry, I had detention."
"Never thought I'd see the day." Regulus muses to himself. He watches Juliet carefully as they fall into a rhythm whilst roaming the corridor. "Do you ever wonder why guys only started to like you this year?"
Juliet falls out of the rhythm. She stop, head tilted and blinks slowly. "I- uh, what?"
"Evan thinks it's because of your brother, and his friends. He thinks they threatened anyone that tried with you. I think, I think they're stupid. Telling themselves they can only have you if your brother isn't around, hating you for years to only be all over you when you're vulnerable."
Juliet noticed that's he's stepped a lot closer to her, his eyes darting around searching for any tiny reaction on her face. "I think they're want me because I swore not to have sex last year until men can treat women with respect. I think they're want to break my morals in order to feel better about themselves."
Regulus can't help but think she's right. "Evan never fancied you."
"I don't want him to, he's my best friend."
"People don't fancy you."
"I know."
"They lust after you because of your body and morals."
"I know. Really, I know."
"I don't see the attraction of a blood traitor."
