Worry laced Mono’s eyes. He watched as Six hobbled over to him. She leaned onto him, Mono keeping his gaze on her to make sure that she was okay. Mono took a deep breath, his mind racing. I am probably over thinking. She’ll tell me if something is wrong. Right? Shaking his head, making his hair sway from side to side, Mono stared up at the open window above them. The gloomy moonlight shining through the window, lighting up Mono’s face.
“Okay. Six I am going to need to hop up there. Then I can pull you up,” He turned to her, “Sound good?” Six nodded, her shoulder length black hair bouncing. She lightly shifted her weight onto her bad leg, wincing. Swiftly, Mono leaped up, grapping the wooden sill. Pulling himself up, he spun on his knees to face Six. Lowering his hand down, he let Six grab onto his hand. As he hoisted Six up, his eyes grew wide, his jaw dropping. Six’s features shone under the moonlight like an angel.
Once on the sill, Six sat on her knees next to Mono, trying to keep pressure off the wound. Together, they got to their feet. The wooden sill rough under Mono’s feet. Six held onto Mono’s hand firmly as he went to peek over the windows edge. Mono gulped as he looked down. Grey fog swirled through the streets of the city, making it hard to accurately estimate how high they were. I guess we are about three stories high. Mono shuffled away from the edge.
His eyes travelled around, trying to find a way to get down safely. Next to him, Six bumped his upper arm with her shoulder, pointing. Mono’s eyes trailed to where her hand was pointing. A drain pipe. “How do you do that?” Mono quizzed himself, hand on his chin. Six tilted her head to the side as she faced Mono. “You always seem to find an escape route before me. It’s…. amazing.” He stared at Six in awe. Mono thought he could see a blush bloom on her cheeks, but she spun her head forward before he could get a good look. His hand still in her’s, he felt his hand go up and down as Six shrugged. “It’s kind of like you have a sixth sense,” Mono concluded, a proud expression on his face.
Six looked at him, confused. Before she snorted, chuckling. Her face went bright red as she laughed. She quickly covered her face with her hand. Mono smiled, giggling along with Six. Still laughing, the two slowly made it to the drain pipe. Six had tears pricking the corner of her eyes as she snickered. Mono supported the laughing Six, helping her to grab onto the pipe. The pipe was long, reaching all the way down into the foggy ocean beneath. Every few inches a metal wire was screwed around the pipe connecting it to the building.
After Six calmed down, she started to make her way down, using the metal wired as a ladder. Mono watched as she carefully made her way down, avoiding her bad leg. Her form soon disappeared in the fog. Mono followed, clutching onto the cool, metal wire. Cautiously, he descended into the mist. He felt the cool air tickle his skin, his brown hair starting to stick to his damp forehead.
Mono felt his grip on the metal wire start to slip. The mist leaving its water droplets on the cool surface. His eyes widened as his hand lost its grip. Mono yelped, his body falling back. His hands scrambled to grab onto something but it was too late, he was already falling.
It only took a few seconds before he felt his back land on rough pavement. The wind was knocked out of him, his lungs wheezing for air. His vision was spotted in black, his muscles screaming. Closing his brown eyes, Mono tried to steady his breathing and relax his sore body.
When he opened his eyes, his gaze was met with a panicked Six looking down on him. Her hair fell in her face, her body stiff with worry. “Are you…. Okay?” She asked, her voice shaking. Mono gave a pained chuckle, “I’m fine. I’m just gonna lay here for a bit until my head stops exploding.” Six sighed, her muscles unwinding. Mono closed his eyes again, enjoying being in a black void for a few moments.
His ears perked as he heard Six shuffle about. Peeking a singular eye open, he saw Six laying down on her back next to him. His heart dancing in his chest, a pure joyful smile tracing his lips. Shutting his eye, he listened to Six’s breathing. His mind felt soothed, knowing that Six was next to him. Unconsciously, Mono reached his hand out before wrapping his fingers around Six’s hand. He felt heat rush to his face, his entire body setting on fire as he lay on the floor with Six.
Suddenly, it began to rain. The rain cooled his flaming face down. Argh. Really? He felt his clothes stick to his skin as he sat up, Six doing the same. Holding each other’s hands, the two got to their feet Mono put his free arm around Six’s waist, keeping her secure in his arms. Rain poured down, the wind whistled. Rouge pieces of paper rustled in the wind, piles of clothing discarded throughout the street. Massive cracks parted the road in many sections along with small craters.
Six whimpered.
Mono instantly looked at her. His heart breaking as her face was twisted in pain from her leg. Mono’s eyes analysed the pale city’s streets. All he could find was a few broken planks of wood and sting that was piled up next to a huge dumpster. An idea lit up in Mono’s head. Making sure Six was with him, he went over to the items. Picking up the objects he bent down before Six’s leg. As he went to touch his coat that was wrapped around her leg, Six pulled away. Mono looked up at Six, Six shook her head.
“Hey, I won’t hurt you. You know that. I won’t touch your injury I promise.” Mono gently whispered. “Do you trust me?” Six nodded, lowering her leg. Mono smiled, before he placed two pieced of the discarded wood pieces on opposite ends of her legs, tying them with two separate strings of rope.
When he was done, Mono pulled away. It was like a leg brace. It kept her leg in a stable position, keeping her wound protected from other objects. Mono stood up, pushing his wet hair from his face as it poured. Six stared at the leg brace, slowly putting pressure on her leg. A bright grin grew on her face. Six looked up, her wet hair parting, allowing Mono to stare into her beautiful eyes. A glimmer shone in her eyes. She was happy.
Mono smiled as he watched Six walk about. She still had a little limp every time she put pressure on her wound but she was able to walk by herself. Mono jogged to catch up to her, as she spun in the middle of the streets. She giggled, enjoying the sweet, fresh rain. Six started to splash in puddles, laughing as it covered her and Mono in freezing water. Six leapt from puddle to puddle like a cat chasing a mouse. Mono rolled his eyes before joining in.
Kicking the water with his feet. The rain water came crashing down onto the girl, soaking her. She chuckled, wiping her face with her hands. Pulling her hands away, she shook her hands, trying to rid of the excess water. Six slightly opened her amber eyes. Mono caught her gaze, giving her a goofy grin. Six laughed, closing her eyes as she smiled.
Mono swore he could stare at Six all night. The moonlight lit her up. Her drenched black hair glowing, her beautiful face highlighted, and her stunning smile being the centre of the master piece. Six’s eyes fluttered open, locking in place with Mono’s brown ones. The two stayed there for a full minute. Six poked her tongue out, skipping off.
Mono exhaled, his gaze softening as he watched the female teen jump around in the rain. Her face looking up at the sky. He kept his eye on her, ready in case she fell. The energized girl continued to dance in the rain, her good leg kicking up water from puddles.
Mono followed, his hands tucked behind his back. He chuckled as Six acted like a child. She giggled, spinning on the spot before pouncing over a giant crack in the road. He suddenly stopped as his eyes caught sight of a small white plant.
A flower.
He bent down, hi fingers gently caressing a petal of the flower. Mono was fascinated. He had never seen a real flower before. He has read of them and their beauty, but that’s it. For him to actually touch one, it was amazing. Without moving his head, he glanced up to Six. She continued to play about pain free. Moving his gaze back down, his fingers carefully picked the flower. Water droplets raced down the delicate white petals.
Mono wandered over to Six. Her back was to him as he approached. Hesitantly, Mono tapped her shoulder. She turned to face him, curiosity written on her face. Without saying a word, Mono gave Six the flower. Six’s amber eyes analysed the plant, cautiously caressing the flower. Mono fiddled with his hands, rubbing them in between each other nervously. Her smile grew even more.
Careful of the flower, Six wrapped her arms around Mono, hugging him. A bright blush blossomed on his face, his heart drumming. Mono hugged back. The two stayed in that position for a while. Letting the refreshing rain fall down on them.
Once they pulled away, Six spun happily, skipping down the street. Mono felt his heart skip a beat. He held his heart, hunching over. Oh crap, am I having a heart attack. What is Six doing to me?
