5 | Johanna Constantine

Atia and Morpheus appeared in London. First thing they saw and heard were two women talking.

"You'll see. I know," the older one seemed to be warning the younger one. "I'm two-hundred-eighty years old, and I know."

The younger one just turned towards her and sent her a smile.

"Constantine," Morpheus said, grabbing her attention.

Johanna whirled back around to face them. She looked both of them up and down, her gaze lingering on Atia's form.

"Have we met?" the mortal asked.

"We have business, you and I," Morpheus replied.

"Get in line, bruv," Johanna smiled and glanced at the building behind them. "Can't keep God waiting."

Sending Atia one last look, she brushed past them, straight towards the building's entrance. The two looked after her, before looking at each other.

"'Bruv'?" Morpheus repeated with a small, amused frown.

"She clearly has no idea what this is about," Atia smiled slightly. "She doesn't even believe we exist."

"That, or maybe she prefers to ignore that."

The woman shrugged. Then, she looked after the mortal, who just walked into the building.

"She does look a lot like Johanna Constantine from three-hundred years ago," she mused. "I'd even say she looks exactly the same."

Exchanging another look, the two followed after the woman. They decided to become invisible to mortals once again and reveal themselves when the time will be best.

As they walked inside, they were greeted by the sight of beautifully decorated inside of the building, where Johanna and a woman, whom she called Ric the Vic, met.

They discussed the reason Johanna was called – to perform an exorcism. She was a very hesitant, when she heard the supposedly possessed person was a royal, but in the end, after she heard the princess shouting, she agreed.

Swapping outfit with Ric the Vic, Johanna went into the room to marry the princess and footballer.

While she was performing the ceremony, instead of speaking the real vows, she spoke the words of the exorcism.

Surprisingly, it wasn't the princess, who was possessed, but her fiancé, Kevin. At first, he joked about it and waved it off, but as the words went on, he got worse and worse. In the end, the demon literally ripped the man apart.

The princess started panicking, as she was splashed with blood and flinched back. Atia almost felt sorry for her.

Johanna called Ric, who led the distressed woman out of the room. Then, she proceeded with the exorcism.

The demon grunted and turned around to face her.

"You... talk too much," he declared.

"Tell me your name and I'll stop," she replied.

"And why would I do that? When there are far more enjoyable ways to make you stop."

That was the moment the hidden couple choose to reveal themselves.

"His name is Agilieth," Morpheus announced.

"I'm flattered you remember me, Lord Morpheus, after all your time away," the demon said and Constantine stepped away, watching the three beings.

"Lord Morpheus?" Johanna echoed.

"He is," Agilieth confirmed. "Though, I confess, I almost didn't recognize you without your helm. But Lady Atia standing by your side is something almost just as recognizable. Still, I wonder where your helm could be."

"I presume it is in Hell, with the demon to whom it was traded," Dream still said.

"Yes, but which demon? Give me the princess and I'll tell you."

Before any of them could say anything else, Johanna went on with her exorcism. This time, she had cross in hand, holding it out towards the demon, who grunted.

"Wait," Morpheus called out quickly, almost panicked.

Fire started to swirl at the demon's feet, before binding his hands and body.

"Fine, fine!" he grunted turning towards the two rulers. "I'll tell you where your helm is, just don't send me back."

They turned towards the woman, who still chanted.

"Johanna, stop it, right now," Atia demanded, but she was ignored.

"Constantine. Stop!" Morpheus shouted. "I command you!"

Still, she went on. Agilieth turned towards her, struggling to move against the fiery bonds.

"Dream of the Endless and his Queen command you!"

"Stop!"

"Run along and fuck off back to Hell," was all Johanna said, before finishing her exorcism.

With a loud scream, the demon turned to ash and disappeared. Dream and Atia looked at the spot he was once in, before turning to the woman, who looked proud and pleased with herself.

"You have no idea what you've done," Morpheus said.

Constantine shut her book and took a step closer towards them, with a small self-satisfied smirk playing on her lips.

"I do though," she said. "I've just tripled my fee."

Then, she walked away.

The couple waited for Johanna outside the building, as she got changed and then, had a chat with Ric the Vic.

While they stood there, they were approached by Mad Hettie, who almost immediately started questioning Morpheus. The Endless didn't seem to mind much, giving her short answers. Atia almost didn't listen to them, as she rather listened to the conversation between two women.

"Yeah. The duke and duchess are on their way to pick up the princess," Ric announced, as she leaned on the doors opposite of Johanna. "Poor thing. She did seem possessed."

"She was," Constantine glanced towards the two beings standing with Mad Hettie. "Love fucks you up."

"Your new man is not unfit," the priestess teased.

"He's not my man. That lady standing next to him, they seem to be in some kind of relationship, married maybe," Johanna shrugged, as she thought back to the demon's words, when he called them by their titles. "Besides, he's not even a man."

"What is he then?" the other woman frowned.

"He's Endless."

Then, she walked towards the three. As she approached them, Dream and Atia turned around to face her.

"I said the Sandman, and I meant the bleedin' Sandman," Mad Hettie declared. "It's good to have you back, milord. Although, I have to say, I didn't expect Lady Atia to come too. Nice to see you too, milady."

Then, she glanced towards the younger woman, before looking back at the two.

"Don't let her mess you about."

"My gran used to tell me stories about you lot," Johanna said as soon as they looked at her after Hettie walked away.

"We've known your family for centuries," Morpheus merely said.

"Then you know there's not one of us that can be trusted. What do you want with me then?"

"Something of mine came into your possession."

"A leather pouch filled with sand," Atia added.

"I need it back."

"Oh, that was yours?" Johanna raised a brow. "Bought it at an estate sale. Didn't even manage to get drawstrings open."

"That might be for the best," the Queen of the Dreaming muttered.

"Where is it?" her husband demanded.

"No idea," the woman shrugged. "Could be anywhere."

"We must find it."

"Must we?" Johanna shot back. "Why is that?"

"Because without it our realm will cease to exist, and if dreams disappear, then so will humanity," Morpheus explained, Atia nodding in agreement.

The mortal in front of them merely raised a brow at them, as if she didn't believe them.

"No offense, but... I could do without dreams for a while," she admitted. "Haven't had a decent night's sleep in ages."

Atia looked down. She felt somewhat responsible for that. While Dream was away, it was her role to rule everything and keep everything under control. However, she failed. Most dreams and nightmares slipped away, while she was trying to keep realm together, a task she also failed at.

The rouges went on their own and appeared in mortals' dreams. Since then, the sleepers divided in two types - the lucky ones, who got pleasant, peaceful dreams, and the unlucky, who had uncontrolled, wild nightmares. Seems like Johanna was in the latter category.

"Nor will you," Morpheus' voice brought Atia's attention back to the conversation. "Until we find the sand. We must go, now."

"Does this approach generally work for you?" the mortal raised a brow, glancing towards Atia, before looking back towards the Endless before her. "You just turn up and order people around?"

"Yes," the Queen of the Dreaming answered without hesitation.

Usually it did work for both of them, but for her husband even better, since he was the more intimidating one.

"Alright," Johanna slowly nodded. "I'll help you find your sand."

"Good."

"First thing tomorrow, and I work alone."

"No," Morpheus protested.

"Don't want you two and your little friend following me all over London," Constantine continued, ignoring his protests.

"My friend?" the two Rulers of Dreaming exchanged confused frowns.

"Is that not your raven?" Johanna glanced to the side.

The two followed her line of sight towards the bench, there in fact, was sitting a raven. It was looking at them curiously, tilting its head from side to side.

"My gran said Dream always had a raven," Johanna said.

"Not anymore," Morpheus shook his head, while he and his wife stared at the bird.

Then, slowly, almost unsurely, they started making their way towards the small creature.

"Who are you?" Lord of Dreams asked.

The raven just started at them.

"Tell me your name."

"It's, uh, Matthew, Your Majesties."

"Matthew," Dream repeated. "I've made it clear to Lucienne that I do not require a raven at this time."

"Yeah, she told me you'd say that," he cawed.

"If I need assistance, I will ask for it," the Endless said, then gestured towards Atia. "For now, I have Atia's help and I do not need more."

"Uh, you do, actually," the raven looked behind the two beings before him. "She's getting away. Sir, my Lady, she..."

As they turned around, they noticed that Johanna was actually gone. Exchanging a tired look, they turned back around to face the bird.

"See, this... this is why you need a raven," Matthew said.

"Go back to the Dreaming, Matthew," Morpheus waved him off.

"Actually..." Atia started unsurely, bringing the attention to herself. "I don't think it will be such a bad idea."

Her husband opened his mouth to protest, but she cut him off before he could.

"I know," she sighed. "I'm also not happy about that. But since he's already here, maybe he could be useful."

"No, he won't," the Endless said softly, then turned back to the raven. "Go back, Matthew."

With one last glance cast towards the bird, he turned around and walked away.

Atia, however, hesitated. As much as she disliked the idea of new raven, while they still weren't over Jessamy, she couldn't deny the truth. Dream of the Endless always had a raven.

She was torn between talking with the bird or following after her husband.

In the end, it was Matthew who made the decision, as he flew away.

Atia found Morpheus staring at the water in the fountain. His silver eyes seemed unfocused and cloudy. She approached him silently and gently grabbed onto his hand.

Almost immediately his eyes seemed to regain their focus, as he glanced towards her and squeezed her hand. Neither of them said anything. They just stood in silence, watching the water and thinking about what's next.

That was until they heard the sound of flapping wings.

"I'm back," Matthew announced.

"Yes, in spite of my telling you to leave," Morpheus sighed, as he looked away from the water, towards the raven.

"I... I can't. I... The boss lady told me-"

"Lucienne is not your master."

"She told me you'd say that too," the raven mused.

"Do you know who we are?" Atia asked softly.

"Not entirely, but I..." Matthew sighed. "I don't even know who I am anymore. A couple hours ago, I apparently died in my sleep, and now I... I'm a bird. I... I used to have thumbs. Now, I have these things."

Atia's eyes immediately softened.

She knew how it was to wake up confused, not knowing what happened or who you were. After all, she was once in his place, but it was a whole lot messier than peaceful death in sleep. All she had left of it now, were two silver lines, one across her temple and another across her neck.

Morpheus seemed to think of the same thing, as his grip tightened around her waist, and he pulled her a bit closer. His silver eyes flickering over her figure for a second, as if he was assuring himself she was right there, safe.

"Yes," the Endless slowly nodded, looking back towards the raven, who was still pointing at his wings. "And you must use them to fly back to the Dreaming. This world is not safe."

"You think I don't know that?" Matthew shot back. "I lived my whole life here. That's why Lucienne sent me to help you."

"My last raven came here to help me," Dream said softly.

"Yeah? Where is he now?"

"Dead," Atia said instead, knowing her husband won't answer. "Her name was Jessamy. She died, while trying to help."

"I'm sorry," the raven made a small pause. "Look, let me at least help you find this woman. If she's asleep, we've probably got five or six hours before she's on the move again."

"If she is asleep, then I know exactly where to find her."
