Chapter 6

Merida's POV

"Merida - I came to say-"

Jack sees us. He sees Hiccup. He sees his best friend with his arms around me and mine around his, obviously previously locked in an embrace. His fists clench around the envelope and the bunch of roses in his hands, ruining them and sending petals to the floor.

"Jack," I say, getting up quickly and walking over to him, a look of horror etched onto my face. "It's not what it-"

"Save it."

"What?"

"SAVE IT." Jack hisses through his teeth, his anger barely containable.

"Jack, mate -" Hiccup starts.

"You," Jack glares at him; if looks could kill Hiccup would be dead twice over. "You, were my best FRIEND."

"Jack!" I plead, clutching his arm to make him stop shaking. He shakes me off with so much force that I fall to the floor, hitting my head on a table as I fall. A tear escapes my eye as I hold it in pain.

"Leave her alone!" Hiccup shouts, running to see if I'm badly hurt. Jack flings out an arm, preventing him from reaching me.

"What're you -"

"Leave her."

"You just pushed her -!"

"LEAVE HER!!"

"I WON'T!"

Hiccup pushes Jack away and runs to me. His eyes full of concern and his face carved in anxiety, he leans down beside me.

"Mer, are you OK?" I nod silently.

"I'm FINE."

I stand up, glaring at Jack.

"Get out of my house."

"I wasn't the one kissing someone else mere hours after we broke up!" he retorted.

"GET OUT."

Jack storms out of the door, slamming it as he goes. The sound echoes through my mind as I pick up the crumpled envelope he left. I open it with trembling hands and a card falls out. I start to read it and as I read the whole thing my mind feels more and more hopeless.

Merida -

I never meant to say what I did earlier. I called you heartless and I called you a bitch. I was a rude arsehole and you're perfectly within your rights to be mad at me. Just please, give me another chance.

I still love you Mer.

Your Frost Boy  xx

I fall to my knees as the card slips from my fingers. Hiccup comes up behind me and puts his arms protectively around me and I bury my face into his hoodie. He smells of woodsmoke and he's warm; my sobs are muffled by the material.

"It's OK Merida," he whispers amongst my red curls. "I'm here now."

"Stay with me," I choke out. I can barely speak anymore.

"I'm not going anywhere."

He pulls me away so I face him and he leans in to kiss me on the forehead lightly. His eyes are closed and his chocolate brown hair falls in front of his face. As he draws away I decide to do what my dream was telling me all along. I close my eyes and kiss his lips softly. He kisses me back harder and wraps his arms around my neck. Our faces are so close together he feels the tear that escapes my eye run down his own cheek.

"What's wrong?" he asks, pulling away.

"Hiccup, I don't deserve you," I say, another tear running down my cheek. "I could live a thousand lifetimes and not deserve you. I'm not good enough for you. I'll never be good enough for you."

Hiccup cups my face in his hands and whispers so quietly it's barely audible -

"Merida, you're perfect to me."
